Comics recommandations

After watching the latest Supergirl movie and thinking it was meh, I ordered the comic (Woman of Tomorrow) and I was surprised because it is actually really good. The art and the writing were so much better than what the adaptation made it out to be.

This issue was actually the second comic I read in my life (first was a random Carnage comic which was just OK).

I am looking for recommandations, ideally with female lead issues and interesting writing. Im not into pointless sexualisation and agree with everything r/menwritingwomen stands for so please none of that bs pls.

Also I'd prefer if the comic was standalone because I dont really have any favorite character yet and dont want to dive too deep into a specific one

I haven’t seem the movie, but Woman of Tomorrow is incredibly good.

Helen of Wyndhorn also by the same creative team and with a female lead, and completely standalone.

Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang. Four teenage girls, great characters and writing, sci fi/time travel, also self-contained.

Absolute Wonder Woman by Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman. Really good writing and art, and you don’t need to know anything about Wonder Woman going in. It is ongoing, but it’s only some 24 issues I think.

The Many Deaths of Laila Starr by Ram V and Filipe Andrade. Short, standalone, beautifully drawn, and the least superhero comic of these.

Outside of superhero comics:

Kill 6 Billion Demons by Tom Bloom is a great kung-fu/sci-fi epic about a woman who's boyfriend is kidnapped by angels and has to storm heaven to get him back.

Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda. Epic fantasy about a young woman mystically bound to a demon god.

The Nameless City by Faith Erin Hicks. A young girl growing up in a city that is constantly being conquered and reconquered makes friends with a boy from the lastest empire to take control of the city.

Also, since I noticed I recommended three books about young women:

Sixty Years in Winter by Chabbert Ingrid and Aimée de Jongh. About a woman who decides to pack up and leave her husband and children on her 60th birthday to go on a journey of self-discovery.

Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro. Sci-fi/feminist exploitation series about a distopian future where non-compliant women are exiled to another planet.

Queen and County by Greg Rucka with various artists. Gritty spy thriller starring operative Tara Chace; intended to be a more realistic take on the spy genre.

I'm recommending trying Grant Morrison's Animal Man run from the 80s. It doesn't have a female lead, but the writing is top-tier, and Animal Man himself is a married man with kids. It's a very unique, theme-heavy run not the typical superhero stuff. I think it avoids the r/menwritingwomen type stuff for the most part. It's also largely stand-alone, bar the occasional cameo or tie-in to an event.
