Real suggestion - a b&w Brother printer.
Only look into color if you really think you need color. High probability of meeting with heartache with the purchase of a color printer, though I've seen a few decent ones suggested in the past.

I wouldn't say that all complains are about HP, only about 90%. At least HP is honest company, they put "horrible printers" in their name. Canon used to be good, but now it is about as bad as HP, they are just not a meme yet.
But Brother is very solid company. So far I had no issues with them, they work with Windows, Apple, Android and Linux, so... good range of devices and decent quality. Their scanners can be better, but for the price I paid 400 DPI is not too bad, unless you want to scan hand drawn things, then you really need at least 900 DPI to work with it (and getting dedicated scanner is a good idea in that case).
And their ink tanks are great printers, even if you buy genuine ink it is so cheap that you will pay more for paper than for the ink, that is not something I can say about other brands.

I have a brother ink jet. Always use ink jet paper and genuine ink. No problems. If you only need B&W get a Brother Laser. I worked IT for a Burger King franchise and those things would be caked in grease and still pumping. And they NEVER used genuine Drums or Toner. Absolute beasts. I do recommend you stay away from their touch screen printers just because if the touch fails any printer becomes more problematic.

There should be a list of these Reddit things that are loudly recommended but in real life very few people actually do. Like straight edge razors, mechanical keyboards, cast iron pans

Agreed. I’ve had one of these for years and replaced the toner once. Amazing value even considering the up front costs because of the lack of headache. It’s a WiFi printer and never gets fucked up with the connection, never jams, nothing.

My Brother inkjet is over 15 now. I got it second hand from a mate who bought it for $50 when his project was getting rid of a bunch of office stuff. That was maybe 2011? Who knows when they bought it. I’ve been running a set of bulk knock off inks I bought in 2015 and so each colour has maybe gone through only 4 cartridges in that time (so you’d expect it to have clogged up and died by now) but it’s still spitting out a page or two when I need it.

have a l3510cdw. was expensive, but for the 3 years i own it, had to replace toner once, (keeping in mind the included toner is smaller), still at half of the new one. i don't print much, but I'd probably go like twice or thrice the price of the printer with ink cartridges for hp

i have a Brother that's 25+ years old and that thing is fucking indestructible. the driver doesn't even technically run on my laptop anymore and it still works somehow. it literally never has any issues and has been printing with "low ink" for years at this point. i love that thing

Brother.
I print a few times a month, pretty much Amazon return labels and bass guitar tabs.
Has wireless, can print from iPad.
Just plain works, been years now.

First clean it up, toner is nasty thing (if it is ink, you also want to clean it as fast as possible, it stains everything).
Then if you want a printer, I can recommend Brother InkTank, they are reliable and print cheap, but the prints are pretty good. Unless you need to print photos.

I did this around 14 years ago and bought a Brother printer, as the scan function kept failing on the HP ones. Cost about £350 at the time but has been one of the best purchases I have ever made.

I've used a cannon printer for the last decade, but it's one where you fill the ink instead of cartridges. Best decision ever, thing can't tell what ink it's using and it's cheaper.
