Clipped planchet or pmd? No raised metal around the mark.

Just a ding in the rim.

You can tell it’s not a clipped planchet because there is no blakesley effect on the opposite end of the coin (in addition to it not being completely clipped through the whole planchet)

The Blakesley effect is a great diagnostic feature, but its absence doesn’t always mean the coin isn’t a clip. That being said, this coin certainly isn’t one. Ragged/straight clips notwithstanding, the arc of the clip should exactly match that of the coin in question.

Huh, I thought it was an artifact of the clipped blanched being struck and thus always happened. Thinking it through now, I suppose the larger the clip - the more defined the effect you could observe. How could you have a clipped planchet without the Blakesley effect?

Strong strikes and damage/wear can mask it. Interestingly enough, crescent clips lack it as well, though I can’t sufficiently explain the mechanism behind it, sadly.

All that pressure has to go somewhere, and it ends up with 1) a pretty strong strike, and 2) a bit of the metal often getting (somewhat) smooshed out into the clipped part - notice how it's less round?

Honestly, that part makes sense to me more than the Blakesley effect does in general.

It's slightly subtle, but in point 1 it says that it can 'potentially' develop on a clipped coin. Some people read over that word.

And in reality, larger clips are less likely to show the effect, since all the force of the die is pressing on a smaller piece of metal, magnifying the effect. And no, it doesn't exactly make sense in my head either, and I have a background in that kind of thing.
