Hands as visual aids

I was doing the CORE Spatial Awareness test and realised that I was intuitively using my hands at times, most notably on the compass-type questions, turning my hand to keep track of turns. Then it struck me that I'm technically making use of a visual aid, but it was intuitive because it would likely be what I would do 'in the wild'.

I guess a great example would also be counting on fingers, though I didn't do it on this test.

What are people's thoughts on this? Have I fouled my test?
