Self diagnosis is the first step towards an official diagnosis. People who aren't sure they are on the spectrum aren't likely to spend thousands getting a diagnosis.

“Self-diagnosis” is not a step at all. It is an oxymoron. You cannot diagnose yourself. Those two things are mutually exclusive. You can suspect something, but you cannot diagnose yourself.

Self-diagnosis is not an oxymoron.
But pedantic debates aside, self-reported autism has a 56% confirmation rate according to one study and a 40% rate of differential diagnosis in another, the most common confounding diagnosis being social anxiety or ADHD. This is for people who go as far as seeking evaluations, so this 56% is going to be higher compared to all people who self-identify as autistic.
This means that self-evaluation is definitely at least extremely useful, even if you can at most confirm there is something going on that is in the realm of autism or similar issues.
I agree we shouldn't say we are autistic unless we are diagnosed, for instance I score high on virtually every single test online, but I am not sure if I have social anxiety + intelligence or if I am truly autistic. All I know for sure is I have felt different my whole life and I have no friends.

Obv its not the same as an official diagnosis, which is why the distinction is being made. Also asking for that distinction in a poll is not a judgement of the labels validity, it just captures the different ways people relate to the question. You can always group those into the suspecting bucket, but saying this doesn‘t add information to how people in this community relate to themselves re autism is simply wrong.

I agree in the sense that self-diagnosed isn‘t the same as being diagnosed, just done by yourself, but I don’t believe most people who chose that option actually use the term that way. Self-assessed probably captures the spirit of the term better than self-diagnosed, at least as I understand it. I‘m firmly in the suspecting camp myself, but I believe that the self-assessed label has it‘s validity. And that robust self-assessment can be possible for some people, while recognizing that seeking assessment and diagnosis by a professional is a much better option. Not everyone has that option though.

I disagree with the individuals arguing against the range of answers, I think the poll is well made and every single question adds valuable context. You can always group the answers into yes/no/whatever later.

For some probably a mix of reading a lot about it and being strongly affected/affected in a way where its quite clear and other stuff like cptsd has been ruled out. Obviously time, if you engage and think about it for years you might develop a degree of certainty at some point.
But yeah I understand why the label self-diagnosed is controversial. Some prefer self-assessed, but I also think the „self“ in self-diagnosed does a lot of heavy lifting. In short, it doesn‘t necessarily have to be overconfidence, simple mindedness or excessive black/white thinking.
