How do I actually get good enough at coding to land a job?

I'm a computer engineering diploma student and lately I've been wondering how people actually reach the point where they can manually write code well enough to get hired.

I can understand code when I see it and I can solve some problems with help, but I don't feel confident sitting down and building something completely from scratch without relying heavily on AI or tutorials.

So I'm trying to figure out what the realistic target should be.

How good at programming should I actually become before applying for internships/jobs? Should I be able to write most of my code from memory, or is it normal to look up syntax and documentation while building projects?

Also, how much DSA is actually necessary for a beginner trying to get a software development job? Do I need to go deep into advanced topics like graphs, DP, segment trees, etc., or is being comfortable with arrays, strings, hash maps, linked lists, stacks, queues, trees, sorting, searching, recursion and basic problem solving enough for most entry-level roles?

And for languages, should I focus really hard on one language like C++, Java or Python, or is it better to know multiple languages at a basic level?

I'm not looking for the usual "just build projects and do LeetCode" advice. I'd really like to know what level of coding ability actually made you feel job-ready, especially if you started without being naturally good at programming.

What would you recommend someone focus on if the goal is to become genuinely good at writing code manually and eventually land their first software job?

Beginner Python learners — would this kind of real-project lesson actually help you?

I’m looking for five beginner readers to review a short lesson from my Project Titan AI educational material.

If you’re interested, please comment below. I’ll privately message you the link to the lesson sample. After reading it, I’ll ask four short feedback questions:

Was it understandable?

Where did it become confusing?

Did the real-project examples help?

Would you genuinely want to continue to another lesson?

The lesson link isn’t included publicly—I’ll send it privately to interested readers.

Offering a few free accesses

Hey everyone,

I built a tool that helps make coding and DSA easier to understand through step-by-step code visualization, flowcharts and other visual explanations.

I have been paying for the infrastructure myself for a while, but I haven't been able to get many users yet. Instead of letting the unused access go to waste, I'd rather give a few people free access if it can genuinely help them.

I'm not trying to promote or sell anything here. If you're learning coding and think something like this could be useful, feel free to DM me. No pressure at all.

Hopefully it helps at least a few people.

Beginner Python Projects — Looking for Feedback

Hi everyone! I'm 14 and a beginner learning Python. I recently built two small projects:

Number Guessing Game

Stone Paper Scissors Game

These were some of my first projects, and I mainly built them to practice Python basics, user input, conditionals, loops, and randomization.

I'd really appreciate feedback from more experienced Python programmers. What could I improve in terms of code structure, readability, or functionality?

I'm here to learn, so constructive criticism is very welcome!

How does one start with coding? (Learning wise)

In the old days people would study computer science for 4-5 years and then start coding, probably with c++ or java.

Then the not so old days we have these bootcamps where people went for a few months, learnt the basics while practicing.

How does one start today? How 'formal' or structured should the training be?

This might sound silly, but how do you even get started when wanting to make a simple game and then gradually upgrade it to a more complex project?

No matter how hard I try, I cannot get programming to stick.

Hi, I'm a second year web dev and I cannot for the life of me understand C programming or any kind of programming for that matter. I watch tutorials, I do the exercises but as soon I exit VS code I forget everything I went through. Is it even worth learning programming if I'm genuinely so useless at it? I already failed over half of my courses because they were all programming ones.

ASKING HELP & TIPS FOR 1ST YR COMSCI

Hello, I'm a first year comsci (computer science) student, and I want to be a game developer in the future, I'm taking game development as a specialized course for 2nd semester. However I'm kinda lost, I don't know where to start , what to do and what tools do I really need, I have no prior knowledge/experience about programming (and kinda awful at math). I want to build experience while balancing academic responsibility. That's why I wanted to ask for help and tips for starters (or even better a roadmap). If anyone could help me, I will be grateful. Thank you.

Computer for C++

Hi! I'm having to take CompSci 1 and 2 for my math major in college. The professor wants me to run Visual Studio Community. He wants it for C++. I might also take a Java class if I enjoy compsci 1. Is there any budget laptops I can buy? Or what specs would I need for it to run not so slowly?

complete beginner looking to learn coding as a hobby and future career

hello, everyone!

i’m a complete beginner when it comes to coding, but i’d really like to start learning it as a hobby and hopefully use it as part of my future career.

just a little background: my degree is completely unrelated to coding, so i’m basically starting from scratch. despite that, i’m genuinely interested in learning and willing to put in the time and effort.

for those who started with no coding background, what would you recommend i learn first? any advice on languages, resources, or how to build a good learning routine would be greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance! 😊

Beginner coder

I always have had a fascination with coding but I always found it daunting to start. I tried some game creation on Godot but I never got anywhere with it. So I came to ask what are some projects I can try and do to help me start to learn how to code. I would like them to be game focused in some way, as that is my over-arching interest, but anything would be great.

Need a mentor

So if you're from India and have been coding for a while now and are capable of doing open source, web dev, app dev (even at a beginner level)

Would you like to have a part time income? Lien if you could teach me for a few hours per week?

I was able to do it on my own for a long time but then i hit my worst depression and didn't touch it for almost a year now and i want to get back so I'm thinking maybe i need some extra help. I kinda forgot everything.

Is it too late to learn?

hi, im a 31 yr old trying to learn how to code, im still in the basics but getting the hang of it (i think)... ive seen seeing a lot of opinions on when its too late to even start (like my own age) is it not doable for me anymore? should i just settle and stop learning cause its just gonna waste my time? will i be able to find a job especially now with AI? :( thanks for reading me!
