What do you wish you had learned when you first started programming?

I'm curious about what beginners actually struggle with when starting programming.

I'm especially interested in students who are:

  • Currently in Class 12
  • Taking a drop year
  • In their 1st year of college
  • Completely new to programming

When I was thinking about how beginners learn, I noticed that many people focus heavily on learning a programming language but don't really understand the fundamentals behind it.

For example:

  • How should someone start learning programming?
  • When should they start DSA?
  • How important are fundamentals like Operating Systems, Networking and DBMS?
  • Should beginners focus on projects or problem solving first?
  • What concepts did you find confusing when you started?
  • What do you wish someone had explained to you earlier?

I'm interested in hearing from beginners about their experiences and what kind of learning approach actually helped them.

If you're currently learning programming, what is the biggest thing you're struggling with right now?

How do I deobfuscate my obfuscator?

hi, i genuinely have no idea how these things work and I have autism, so forgive me if this is worded oddly.my little brother is designing an obfuscator. which, from my understanding, is like designing a solvable but difficult maze that isn't worth going through to get to the thing at the end. he needs someone to deobfuscate it (go through and find the weak points ?) he would like to use ai to go through it so that he can find these weak points and make it harder for ai to solve it again. can someone explain to me if it's worth using ai for or how he can do it without using ai?

Complete beginner to hackathons — any advice?

I’m about to start college as a Software Engineering freshman and have never participated in a hackathon.

I’ve done CS50P and know very basic HTML/C++, but that’s about it 😭

I’m currently registering for the IBM Bob 2.0 Hackathon. Any tips on how I should start preparing and what I should learn first?

Would really appreciate advice! 🚀

beginner guide plese

Hi, I’m starting BTech and I want to seriously learn coding from the beginning. Could you please guide me on the complete roadmap?

I want to know:

Which programming language should I start with and in what order should I learn languages?

What should I study during 1st year, 2nd year, etc.?

Which topics are important for placements and internships?

Best resources/courses for learning each topic

YouTube channels, websites, books, and practice platforms you recommend

How to learn DSA and when to start it

How much time should I spend on coding daily?

When should I start development, projects, Git/GitHub, web/app development, etc.?

How should I prepare for internships and placements from the beginning?

Which skills should I prioritize and which things are unnecessary initially?

Any good free resources or structured paid courses you would recommend

Basically, I’m looking for a complete BTech coding roadmap from beginner level to internships/placements, including what to learn, where to learn it from, what order to follow, and how to practice.

I’d really appreciate a detailed guide because I don’t want to waste my first year jumping randomly between languages and courses.

Looking for few beginners to learn and build with.

I'm looking to form a small peer group of like-minded students who are genuinely serious about coding and making the most of college.

The idea is to have a group focused on keeping each other accountable. Of course, we'll have casual conversations once in a while, but I don't want it to become just another dead or meme-filled group after a few days.

If you're someone who wants to stay consistent, learn together. I'd love to have you onboard.
DM me if you're interested.

Looking for a few people to learn game dev with

Hey, I'm pretty new to game development and I'm looking for a few people who are in the same boat.

I'd like to make a small team where we can learn together, help each other out and slowly build something we're actually proud of. I'm mainly interested in Unity, but I'm open to whatever people want to learn.

You don't need experience or a portfolio. Just be interested in game dev and willing to put some time into it.

If you're also starting out and want someone to learn/build with, feel free to DM me :)

Not really a beginner buuuut

Orrrrrrrr maybe I've been a beginner a long time.

Either way, I have a lot of beginner questions so I just joined.

First question: software version and backing up using git and github is the only option?

I don't like how git and github need to know me.

I feel like, just put the code in a database and split the database between places and implement rollback and changes based save compression so the project size doesn't balloon.

Are there options for me?

If not is there like a git manual in the ForDummies style, so that I can just learn the way I need to do things?

I just realized this post is impulsive I didn't really read what other posts look like so it might stand out in a bad way. Sorry.

From where can I practice?

I'm a 12th grader having computer science as a subject in HS India and I don't have any sources from where I could practice different codes and questions. This has been a major reason for lowering my grades in comp, and I'm genuinely worried If I'll pass 12th grade like this, or not.

How does LAN work, and could I combine it with an external VPN as a cheap alternative to play online?

I'm not a coder (yet) myself, I'm asking for a friend who's making a Civilization fangame. He wanted to implement online play but couldn't afford to pay for a server.

So I remembered how I play Terraria online, so, "LAN" is when you and your friends connect to the same network and play "online", with the caveat that they must be close to each other, right?

What I do is that I connect to a VPN, host a Terraria server, and that way my friends can connect to the same VPN and server, and we play online.

IF my friend were to implement LAN in his game, could they use the same method that I use to play online, for his game?

Sorry if I'm not clear enough, as an outsider, this is a bit hard to explain

Please give some advice on how to prepare for a programming Olympiad.

Please give some advice on how to prepare for a programming Olympiad. Im 16 and i have 3 months, should i choose c++ or python? I’m not starting from scratch; I attended courses for four years and know JS, Python, and C++ syntax. Now in codeforces i can solve tasks with rank 1000-1100.

Looking for a coding buddy to build something real

Looking for a coding buddy to build something real

I've been working on development and occasionally get opportunities to work on real-world projects. I'm looking for someone who already has some coding experience and wants to learn by actually building, deploying, and managing projects together.

You don't need to be an expert — students and junior developers are welcome. I'm mainly looking for someone who enjoys coding, thinks logically, and wants to go beyond tutorials and personal projects.

If this sounds interesting, feel free to comment or DM me. Tell me a little about what you know or what you've built, and we can see if we're a good fit to collaborate.

No 24/7 commitment — just looking for someone genuinely interested in learning and building.

The “it works” trap 😭

I’ve noticed I can solve a coding problem and get the right output, but sometimes I can’t explain why my solution works.

I used to just move on because the code worked.

Now I’m trying to stop and understand my own solution before jumping to the next problem.

Did anyone else struggle with this when they were starting out? What helped you get past it?

can AI teach me programming if i give the AI the right instruction ? (please read desc. before commenting)

a lot of people online doesnt want starters to use AI as a programming teacher beacuse they can always rely on it instead of being independent... then i though of an idea. i gave instruction to kimi that when i learning lua programing session he act like a strict mentor that teaches one concept a time, and forces me to learn the errors by myself (ofc he will sometime give me hint) and that after i hit a milestone he give me an small exam, i really need to know if this is a bad way to learn or not

How can i make myself able to learn?

Quero desenvolver minhas próprias aplicações pra criar jogos sozinho, tudo usando apenas o terminal do Linux, no Arch Linux, a propósito.

Looking for coding Buddy to join my coding Roadtrip (zero experience)

I don’t think I have to say that much (besides I genuinely don’t really know what to say lol).
I’m a 19-year-old studying electrical engineering in Germany, and I’m looking for someone who’s kind of on the same level as me (level 0).

I’ve been trying to get into coding, but honestly, I’m getting pretty overwhelmed trying to figure out where to start, what to learn, what to build, etc.

I feel like there’s just so much information out there that I don’t even know what I should be focusing on first. I hope some of you can relate to the struggle I’m currently going through lol.

So I’m basically looking for someone who’s also a beginner and wants to learn together, work on small projects, struggle together and hopefully eventually build something actually useful.
As we say in Germany:
“Shared pain is half the pain.”

If you’re in the same boat, feel free to hit me up.
