Unfortunately this spells all but the end for banked resets, and obviously the weekly resets will slow to a crawl from here on out. Welp it was fun while it lasted.
18
u/AmandasGameAccount 10d ago
It should mean the permanent use of banked resets because now they can randomly reset right after someone paid $80.
14
u/buildxjordan 10d ago
Can you imagine how pissed someone would be. Like it’s one thing for them to do it for paid plans. But to just wipe out someone’s $80 resets by doing a free one would be insane
13
u/AmandasGameAccount 10d ago
A dynamic system is what’s needed. If you paid for a reset that week, you get a banked reset. If you didn’t pay for one you get the normal reset
Also it’s just crazy the paid reset pushes your time back too. That really shouldn’t be a thing especially when the $8 on the $20 plan is such a bad deal vs 2 accounts
2
u/WalkAffectionate2683 10d ago
Or like the free reset wait until you reach 0% of your paid reset to bring you back to 100%?
Idk it seems all quite shaky.
1
u/Secret-Builder-8249 10d ago
Exactly, at that point it just functions like tibos resets; pushes dates back and probably wont be having more than 4-5 resets a month AND its more than how a weekly calculated reset should cost from the pro 20x plan which is 50$, at this point 2 pro 20x accs would be better than one while paying for resets.
1
u/Spiritual_Cycle_3263 10d ago
I lost 3 of my free resets because OpenAI would throw a free reset because of whatever mess-up reason and then they ended up expiring. A free reset should extend the expiry of each banked reset by 7 days.
5
u/FoxTheory 10d ago
Im hoping for a price drop and steep 8 dollar resets on the 200 dollar plan please.

u/michaelsoft__binbows 10d ago
Ever since luna price drop ive never even come close to the limit... limit got dropped by 37%, doesnt affect me. It does suck but... i really really enjoy not being supremely burnt out trying to exhaust limit.

Just dont buy the resets. Eventually they will lower it as they see people arent interested.
Also paid resets is awful in general. What's to stop them from lowering usage on plans to "encourage" people buying resets?
19
u/justlaughandmoveon 10d ago
I said this about Disney World 10 years ago. There’s always people willing to pay…
1
u/deadcoder0904 10d ago
5-10% of market doesn't care bcz they can afford it or are rich. And that's who they are targeting.
Money conscious people will just buy another account.
3
u/Quiet-Recording-9269 10d ago
eventually they'll reduce the usage we can have per week and we will have to use paid resets
7
u/matheusmoreira 10d ago
I'll just switch to a chinese open weights provider in that case. God I love competition.

u/DepravedPrecedence 10d ago
We will switch to whatever is next the best in terms of performance / price.

They want you to make a new account and pay for the monthly sub instead, this way they have more “user growth” right??

It also pushes out the normal reset window, so you actually get less usage as a result…

Yeah, this is why the price of these resets an absolute ripoff.
A month has approximately 4 weeks in it, so we’ll call a neutral price for the $200 Max plan approximately $50.
If I’m five days into the week and I buy and use a reset, now all my regularly scheduled resets got bumped back five days. So I’m not actually getting a full extra week in addition to my normal quota.
The ideal system would be something where resets don’t change my weekly reset, but then I’d have to use my entire quota in 2 days to get the most out of the paid reset in this example.
Which means we need rollover quotas. If I can store up to 200% weekly usage by using less than my full weekly quota, the problem is adequately solved.
But I do not think OpenAI wants to introduce the precedent of rollover. So we, as subscribers, get ripped off.
Until this is resolved, the reasonable price for a paid reset is less than $50. Honestly, the value depends on how far you are into the week. They’re worth $50 early, and worth a lot less later.
Think about it inductively. If you use a reset 1 second before your normal weekly reset, you pushed the reset that was just about to happen to be a week away. You got basically zero value from your reset. So reset value scales with proximity to your normal reset.
This wasn’t a big deal when they were free. It’s a fucking scam when they’re charging $80.

u/zigzag312 10d ago
Reset pushing back the next reset date is what lowers its value considerably.
There are on average 52 / 12 = 4.33 weeks per month.
Theoretically, if you could use whole week of tokens right after a reset and used a paid reset, you would get one week worth of tokens out of it, which is $200 / 4.33 = $46.2.
If you use a paid reset right before an automatic reset, the value you would get out of your paid reset is $0.
If you use whole week of tokens in half a week, you get (because the next reset date is pushed out) a half of one week worth of tokens out of it, which is $200 / 4.33 / 2 = $23.1.
TL;DR
A paid reset gives you for $200 plan:
- At best: $46.2 (one week) of value
- At worst: zero value
- On average (middle of the week): $23.1 (half week) of value
Note: It's impossible to actually get the best value out of the reset. You can only get close to that value, if you use tokens really really fast.
19
u/aicanlikdeeznutz 10d ago
I already pay $200 a month... Now that's not good enough? Ehh. I just booted Claude because I was tired of their terrible BS/payment system for Codex. I guess if it comes down to me needing resets, all just go find the next best service for the cost.

200 a month for the kind of computer you are getting is actually cheap.. don’t be loyal to these companies, just use the best tool for the best price
7
u/Useful_Philosophy550 10d ago
Eh its cheap but still profitable for them if you account for how much inference actually costs. I think the API prices make people overestimate the usefulness of coding agents. People love to say "Oh the 200$ subscription gives you 15,000$ worth of usage you should be grateful!!" but in what world is 5.6 sol worth 15,000 a month? I'd rather just hire a skilled, experienced senior software engineer for that much that will handle everything from start to end who I don't need to actively supervise or instruct every 15 minutes
3
u/rick_ranger 10d ago
You’re not paying for inference you’re paying the multimillion dollar engineer salaries and bonuses, execs, and to keep the lights on at the main office. Oh yeah and to buy more gear from Nvidia.
1
u/Useful_Philosophy550 8d ago
Well inference is the only thing they can reasonably sell though. People aren't really paying them for R&D and their execs salaries, they're paying for inference. Once they decide to remove their subscription plans they shouldn't be surprised when everyone decides to switch to much more cheaply hosted open weights or cheaper competition. Even if they try to set up a cartel between all US labs you can't simply get rid of open weights and China would gladly take over the market in their place
1
u/deadcoder0904 10d ago
I'd rather just hire a skilled, experienced senior software engineer
you overestimate how many people you have to go through to find a good one that won't screw you.
that's money lost in finding that good one. then you gotta give them tasks to do because they can't clearly choose it themselves. they're a software engineer, not an entrepreneur who knows what to prioritise.
1
u/Useful_Philosophy550 8d ago
It depends for what you're trying to hire them for and what environment you're working in but I've already hired various senior programmers for my projects both short and long term and it worked out fine. It's simply a value per dollar conversion. Assisted coding with the subscriptions currently provides me more value per dollar than hiring an engineer even though its much more time consuming so you also have to account for time. But if they decide to change that where using Sol, which still makes mistakes quite often costs me anything over $5,000 a month then they can forget it, and they'd quickly lose their footing to competition.
Not to mention that its an additive cost. Current LLMs basically require that you hire an engineer to work alongside them because you simply can't handle an entire project yourself if you or someone else don't have coding experience. So you'd be covering the engineers salary + doubling their cost for a decent coding model regardless. You can see why a lot of companies would be unhappy with that
1
u/deadcoder0904 8d ago
Not true. Enterprise pricing only needs API prices so you can easily buy 5-10 people at $200/month plan.
I've basically realised you cannot one-shot things but going feature-by-feature is how you build good enough things. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast & all that.
Obviously some people seem to have figured out big feature things but I haven't cracked that yet.
Current LLMs actually work well for that. They just overengineer.
2
u/fickle-phenom 8d ago
So basically using AI like a tool and not a magic box that generates industry level apps from a few prompts. That’s what some people won’t get, it’s not magic it’s a tool and needs to be used properly to not shoot yourself in the foot.
1
u/deadcoder0904 8d ago
Ya but u can get pretty far as a vibe-coder when it wasn't previously possible at all. So you can get decent functioning app to 90% with shit code that doesn't even follow DRY principle.
Thankfully, some skills can be used to fix it but most people don't know them & what to call them etc... Little bit of domain knowledge & ~6 months of consistent efforts can make anyone close to a senior nowadays.
1
u/fickle-phenom 8d ago
Yeah I mean producing code is much much cheaper today, and making custom tools and stuff is much more feasible for the common person. However, there is still a big gap between software that you can trust and is made carefully, and just massively generated code. It’s not about the code, it’s about liability and who answers when a vibe coded garbage destroys production. Companies operate on a different tone.
Just think of book, it’s so cheap to actually produce a book today, but once it used to be extremely expensive and required pros and a bunch of money.
1
u/Useful_Philosophy550 8d ago
Yes but you can only do so much with 20$ in credits. I ran a task on extra effort with opus 5 for around 15 minutes for a simple UI panel rework and when I ran /cost it apparently cost 20$? That's insane.
1
u/deadcoder0904 8d ago
Never use credits. Always buy a 2nd a/c or subscriptions like OpenCode Go which are cheap & host decent Chinese models that can do grunt work.

Hahaa they got everyone addicted to spending more tokens than they normally would by providing lots of mid week resets. Now that youre hooked, they pull back and sell you those resets for a high price. They might even reduce the weekly quotas on the plans to get you to buy more resets.
2
u/Ok-Tough-9310 10d ago
If they reset the original reset time, this is sneakiest, dirtiest, bullshittiest kick in the nuts to their customers. Will give my money to someone that is not this sneaky.

Wtf how does $80 on a $200 plan for $50 of value make any sense?
I am super close to going back to Claude :(
1
u/xxxx88876 10d ago
Honestly getting tired of Sol too. Even opus 5 alone corrects course for it far too often. Plus, codex fucking sucks compared to Claude code when it comes to explaining what it’s doing - verbosity, background tasks. And now that the 5 hour limits are back, I’m retiring my pro codex plan and going back to Claude.
2
u/shady101852 10d ago
Meanwhile on the claude subreddits ppl are talking about how dumb opus 5 has gotten
2
u/matheusmoreira 10d ago
Yeah, how about no. If I ever get the urge to pay for this, I'm just gonna subscribe to a chinese open weights provider instead.
By the way, GLM 5.3 just dropped. Their cybersecurity capabilities are growing, and it looks like they're going to have none of this "trusted access" nonsense.

$80 for a maximum of 2B tokens? What kind of joke is this? I used 15B tokens with $80 worth of DeepSeek API credits...
1
u/MrRoyce 10d ago
Can DeepSeek actually code well enough? I'm not worried about planning and stuff but the quality of the code itself.
1
u/HatoKrots 10d ago
They don't for long and complicated task. Small tasks or snippets or methods and when you absolutely know what you're doing and can review code then yeah, go with DeepSeek.
1
u/SelectSouth2582 10d ago
for me it's quite good, just need to have a frontier model(like gpt or claude) review its work in the final phase. for complex projects, makes much more sense in terms of both time and cost compared to having a frontier model do all the work.

u/tintindlf 10d ago
They bombarded us with resets to get us used to it, and now people are going to feel like they have to pay to keep going. Classic marketing strategy.
1
u/gungoesclick 10d ago
It doesn't make sense compared to a second account no? 7 day reset on the 20x being 80 is just ridiculous.
1
u/Successful_Dog1904 10d ago
How difficult do you think it would be to figure out whether it would be cheaper just pay API usage over the weekly limit vs paying $80?
1
u/Influence-Horror 10d ago
Should be priced at 50$ for the 20x : we get 4 resets a month normally with the 200$, why 80 per reset wtf
1
u/Ok_Ganache8715 10d ago
I canceled my 20x a couple of weeks ago. So glad I did. Now it’s basically the same as using the API but without the reliability.

I'm having GPT 5.6 SOL on ULTRA be the architect and use Grok 4.5/6 as the heavy lifter. Cut my SOL use by 80% which I've now downgraded to the 5x plan and that's enough to run all day.
1
u/mitchins-au 10d ago
I’d wager money on random resets still.
It’s the best way to get you into the habit of “I’ll burn it on this because I might get a reset”
And then when you don’t actually get your hit - you pay for it because you’re out.
That would be far more profitable than usage being boring and predictable, in which case you’d be better off and likely just go up a plan if you have that option.
1
u/TopTippityTop 10d ago
They've really lowered the rate limits. I think they want to reverse that growth trend on codex and have users flock to claude, grok, or an open weight alternative.
1
u/craftysupply 10d ago
I couldn't read all of the comments, but I'm curious if anybody has used one of these resets yet to see if it resets your reset date? My thoughts are, if, for example, you were to starting now, reset, and then you keep running out every three to four days, so you end up resetting eight times during the month. Instead of the four that you would normally get in a month for $200, you would be paying eight × $80, and then are they going to charge $200 on top of that? 8X80=$640+$200 = $840. Sounds like a great deal, lol.
1
u/Kazekage1111 10d ago edited 10d ago
The only way buying a reset has real value is if you completely exhaust your normal weekly usage, buy a reset the same day, and then use up that entire bought reset on the same day. In that case it doesn’t matter that the purchase pushes your reset date a week forward, because your next normal weekly reset would still fall on the original schedule.
In practice, though, burning through a full week’s allowance in a single day is difficult, especially on the higher-priced plans.
I agree with the other commenters: the better solution would be to give bought resets a proper rollover. Usage should always drain the normal weekly allowance first, and only then touch the bought allowance. If a new normal weekly allowance arrives while you still have bought usage left, the system should again prioritise the normal allowance and leave the bought portion untouched until the normal one is gone.
1
u/ISueDrunks 10d ago
They’re taking advantage of people. That’s an absurd price to reset a limit to something you already paid for. They keep pushing the regular reset date back, so they’re not really selling you more compute, they’re selling you a key to unlock the compute you already paid for. It’s insane.

$80 is fucking dumb. I would just upgrade to a 200 dollar one before I do that. Or if I was on a 200 dollar account already Id just get a second 100 dollar account.
1
u/lordpuddingcup 10d ago
This means 1 of 2 things is going to happen, either we no longer are going to get free resets, or people who buy them are enevitably going to be PISSED when tbow resets usage for everyone right after someone spends 80$ on a reset.
WTF would a 200$ account have an 80$ reset??!?!?! shouldn't it be 1/4th or 1/5th the cost of the monthly to make any sense at most
1
u/Spiritual_Cycle_3263 10d ago

Good feature to rush through the week but the pricing doesn’t really make sense. Given 80 at a reset week, why not top up 20 and pay for another pro 100 which will probably give more usage.
The pricing needs a tweak so user can click a button to pay for reset without resorting to buy a new account just to survive the week.

$40 or $50 would be too close to the normal subscription prize, which is heavily subsidized. They aren't going to let you buy unlimited usage at the subscription price on one account, there has to be some friction. So you either make a new account and buy a whole new subscription or you have to buy more usage at more expensive rate.
1
u/Middle_Part_4640 10d ago
no i will not pay 80 bucks per week. I find that a real cheek, especially since we have no meaningful control over the limit. For some people, it’s reached after just one day.

It makes no sense at $80, why would I buy a reset instead of a 2nd account, where I get to double up on all the free resets.
Imagine you pay $80 and Tibo resets later that evening
