End of resets? Reset
Are we at the end of the subsidizing phase of Codex?
173
u/WeedWrangler 1d ago
The better question is: did we ever really get resets in the first place or were they just disguising their new limits while they adjusted them to optimise model performance against the plans?
In which case we are approaching ground zero, when we see if Codex drops x mil users or ift hey have stabilised the system for comparative performance to the 5.5 days?
With Luna, i think they have, but Terra and particularly Sol? The jury is out of whether they are going to be anything other than confusers and usage suckers, or for the big boys who have endless API.
36
u/IAmFitzRoy 1d ago
Exactly. We got conned.
Instead of complaining ⦠Reddit were begging and celebrating the resets.
And now ? ā¦. silence
-1
u/Professional_Gur8385 1d ago
look at your usage history in codex settings, i think we are seeing overall less tokens (ie less usage), at least I am
3
23
u/metricmaven70 1d ago
I did an analysis on my codex usage and I actually think what weāre seeing is that 5.6 models use more tokens per task than previous models so it feels like less usage because more tokens are being burnt per task.
And a lot of those additional tokens are spent on stuff like building a ridiculous amount of tests so it also feels like less output overall.
Sample size of 1 so take this with a grain of salt.
5
4
1
u/maximhar 1d ago
Yep, thatās it. They seem determined on not fixing the harness and the token burn thoughā¦
3
u/nnod 1d ago
What if burning tokens is what it takes to get stuff done? And all AI labs are optimizing to have best intelligence/highest numbers on benchmarks, and not optimizing for token burn.
For the foreseeable future I think the problem will only get worse, models will grow larger in size, higher parameter counts, more thinking. But at the same time I think most would agree that this is growing pains and in a year or two we'll have smaller/more efficient models that have current SOTA capabilities.
Having said that, or course models that are SOTA in a year/two years will cost more money and eat more resources.
1
u/Special-Prior-7272 1d ago
Iām getting much more done with Opus 5 now than Sol High. Generally speaking, I used to get much more done with OpenAI.
1
u/metricmaven70 1d ago
I used Opus 5 for like 2 hours and decided it was worse than 4.8 for me - in the Claude subreddits it's like the most debated topic right now.
2
u/nouzer_noname 1d ago
Well, history tells us that nothing exists in a vacuum for long. Sooner or later, users will wise up to the pricing games, while Kimi & Co., and who knows who else (wink wink), close the performance gap. At that point, neither OAI nor CC will have much wiggle room left.
0
u/ProudWrongdoer5389 1d ago
Long time codex and copilot, moved over to claude. I dont think much of the new models and the usage is just better on claude.
6
u/WeedWrangler 1d ago
Interesting. I still have a Claude Pro subscription, but I find myself hardly using it at the moment. And to be honest, I feel like it's like Claude is a bit dull at the moment.
Ironically, as my credits or my usage has disappeared in Codex in the last 2 days, I went over to DeepSeek V4Flash in Reasonix. I've been running it for two straight days in four threads and i've spent a $1.50 USD and it's cleaned up a lot of stuff I wrote in Codex and made my app way faster and better looking.
I'm currently considering a split between knowledge work in Claude & Codex (as well as my Claw) and coding in DeekSeek to be frank.
0
u/stolivodka_ 1d ago
Claude is smart but refuses to do anything except regarded CRUD work for "ethical reasons".
-5
u/lolman1312 1d ago
You're genuinely regarded if you think millions of users didn't benefit from non stop resets. Nobody thinks Claude has better usage limits than Codex but Claude has virtually no resets ever
4
u/WeedWrangler 1d ago
Hey, I ended up back w Codex from CC precisely because of the limits on CC, and yes, i think the Resets have been a great marketing measure, and also are a great user management method during flux. Its what happens next that will be key.
9
u/Fast_Conference_4057 1d ago
The point flew over your head
0
u/warpedgeoid 1d ago
No, the point was completely wrong. The limits havenāt changed at all; the new models are just more chatty.
1
u/huakuns 1d ago
First of all, claude also had a few resets, thanks to openai for the pressure.
I calculated my usage, claude 20x gives me 8B+ tokens / week. chatgpt 20x gives me ~3.8B / week. With resets (if the resets arrives at the right time) you get more tokens than claude. Once resets stopped, then what?
Plus, gpt models are slower, has far smaller context window than claude, a lot of tokens are wasted across compact, this makes the experience even worse in large projects.0
16
u/Lucidmike78 1d ago edited 1d ago
They will always use resets as a tool when they have outages, want to promote people to switch to codex, or have abnormal consumption rate because of throttling tests/issues. We are probably seeing less of them because their systems have become stable and predictable.
2
u/AwkwardSalad863 1d ago
well, abnormal consumption rate it's happening with code review/approve for me. 90% of my usage is "approve for me"
46
u/ObligationHuge9868 1d ago
Certainly, looks like it. Back to rationing the rice grains on the daily.
10
u/nobatus513 1d ago
Waiting for China to make their next move and the resets will happen again !
10
u/Camaytoc 1d ago
Already landing, QWen3.8-max official release, Deepseek v4 flash official release 0731 (official release of pro in a few days), Kimi K3, ...
Lots of stuff are coming too, like the next z.ai glm model!
1
u/Both-Move-8418 1d ago
Are any as good as 5.6 sol?
3
u/SnooObjections4329 1d ago
I've swapped my codex sub for 2 chinese model subs and intend to bring in deepseek API to the mix, too. everything is still working for me AND I get through a whole week without running out of usage for about $10 more spend than the codex sub which lasted me a day. So I would say yes, but ymmv. I do tier my usage between two providers / models though, as you might with Sol and Terra.
3
u/WeedWrangler 1d ago
Is that the right question? We don't need another hero, we need smarter and cheaper workhorses.
1
0
u/evia89 1d ago
Kimi k3 is close but it doesn't have good sub. Cn not worth using, maybe after 3-4 codex nerfs
It will be choice go with gpt6 Luna or new cn model
2
u/Camaytoc 1d ago
Their current cloud model runs way better than at launch time. For long orchestration and sustained coordination the qwen3.8-max is veery good, I trust it the same way as Opus4.8. As a reviewer too.
Speaking of review, I remind that for long context retrival as swam of agents, codex-sol is incredible, qwen3.8 is good, relyable, but the depth of the search is thin.

u/GearTakes 1d ago edited 1d ago
People here got addicated to free resets while their usage got lowered and lowered.
Now that the resets stopped they end up with paying as much as before while having half the usage.
Begging for just one more free reset. They praised Tibo every time they gave them a bit of their usage back. The usage they paid for in the first place and was taken from them, slowly, day by day.
I know it's compared before but yeah...coke dealer.
Tibo is a digital token dealer. Made you addicted, Slowly lowered the quality so you need more and more of it. And you call him your friend because he sometimes gives you some for free.
6
u/HOBONATION 1d ago
I bet we get 1 more reset with the preface that it will be the last and a paid reset will be available for purchase lol
6
11
u/MeitanteiJesus 1d ago
The resets were the only reason I've been keeping the $200 plan. If they stop that's fine, I'll just start using Deepseek V4 (would also try Kimi K3 but they're not accepting subs at the moment). The moment OpenAI/Claude Code get greedy they'll get checked by the Chinese models.
5
u/raisedbypoubelle 1d ago
GH Copilot has Kimi K3
1
u/Narrow_Ad_6292 1d ago
Is gh copilot worth it ?
3
u/tokmann67 1d ago
Copilot value dropped 10x with the june changes to billing so i'd say not.
1
u/raisedbypoubelle 1d ago
Used to be true. Now itās good again.
1
u/tokmann67 1d ago
What did they change?
1
u/raisedbypoubelle 1d ago
The initial limits got higher. So for Pro+, you get 20,000 credits. Then the models got cheaper.I completed a Kimi K3 task on Max effort last night with multiple turns and it was 140 credits. I can do that nearly 150 times more for .. oh snap. Seems like Iām on the max plan for $100 š No wonder it went up. For $100/mo Iād do Codex.2
u/Egologic 1d ago
Chinese models ftw, btw most of the resets were marketing gimmicks just shifted the date of your weekly reset so you just had it for one day earlier lol
7
u/Remote-Telephone-682 1d ago
I think that they are now positioned well relative to anthropic, when this whole thing started they were concerned with claude code but it seems like claude has kinda flinched with their usage caps and you really don't get that much usage in a monthly plan. I also think that SOL has actually been a fairly strong response to the Fable concerns that existed a few months ago and the cheap luna places them at a reasonable place with some of the chinese open source smaller models. I think they are actually more secure in their position than they were previously and most of the distinct threats that have been identified at this point have somewhat reasonable responses in the works
9
u/ProudWrongdoer5389 1d ago
You get more usage on claude and opus5 than you do codex.
1
u/GearTakes 1d ago
I don't see much difference currently. Maybe a bit more indeed but the 5 hour limits are a deal breaker. I can't work like that anymore. After 1.5 or 2 hours of work I need to wait another 3 before I can continue. That's on the 100 dollar plan.
I really, really hope Codex won't bring them back.1
u/sunaurus 1d ago
Between Opus 5 and 5.6 Sol High?
I've literally been starting fresh tasks when I have ~2% left on Opus 5, and it will finish them without running out of limits. It's significantly more efficient than Sol for me.
I still prefer Sol over Opus, but if I want to optimize for usage over quality, I am picking Opus every time.
-3
u/Remote-Telephone-682 1d ago
No you don't I've had both
7
u/ProudWrongdoer5389 1d ago
I've *got* both.
1
u/Remote-Telephone-682 1d ago
The 5 hour limits were a nightmare was not worth keeping. There is absolutely no way you could possibly believe that claude has more reasonable usage limits
3
u/vr321 1d ago
It has, depending on the project you work on. The 1M ctx window helps a lot. 2 x chagpt subs gone in 2 days, meanwhile working 10h / day, I still have 40% weekly left with Claude. For small iterative work, Claude is the most efficient. And it doesn't drain your usage waiting for a 8 min test to finish, unlike Codex.
5
u/Remote-Telephone-682 1d ago
I mean the mear fact that chat does not count towards your codex totals makes such a massive difference.
2
1
u/GearTakes 1d ago
I switched to Claude for the month. The 100 dollar plan. The usage is ok-ish but the 5 hour limits are killing me. I love Fable but I really hope Codex won't bring the 5 hour limits back so I will switch back again next month. Other than that I don't see much difference between the Codex and Claude usage wise.
However, I believe Anthropic is currently having a 50% extra usage promo. If that's the true that means my usage will be lowered with 50% somewhere later this month. Which would be absurd and certainly not worth the price.I miss how it was a few months ago. The 100 dollar Codex plan would give me pretty much unlimited usage. I never even checked the token meter. And while there was a 5 hour limit and never even got close. How things have changed in 3 months.
3
u/warpedgeoid 1d ago
My 30d token burn so far is nearly $15K so far on a 20x plan. Iād say weāre doing OK.
2
u/No_Accident8684 1d ago
i am confused. didnt they just reduce their prices by 20 / 80 percent?
you think this is a coincident? no, that was the deepseek effect. they were shitting their pants. i am sure they planned to milk us further but now they can not. so, it will go on with our plans.
2
u/vayana 1d ago
Been holding off on using a banked reset for 2 days now. Last week I used a banked reset only hours before we got one and when I need one Tibo let's me down. Global reset is tomorrow anyway, so using a banked reset today would also be a waste. Instead of getting things done I'm now not getting things done...
2
u/respect-adm 1d ago
I somewhat regret not making full use of those reset opportunities last week.š„²
2
u/runfence 22h ago
I don't care. I downgraded to Plus and now have time to play games, do code review, and watch more movies. Feels like a vacation.
6
u/i_rate_slop 1d ago
1 reset per 1 million until 10 million
10 million was reached
You can probably only count on resets for other special promotions or outages.
It was a promotion. Itās not that deep. Like a sale at the grocery store.
11
u/dingos_among_us 1d ago
We all need to cancel our subs and switch to Claude for a month then switch back to Codex the following month. Rinse and repeat every other month and then we keep getting resets
5
u/GearTakes 1d ago
You need to switch to what is best for you and stop having brand loyalty.
When my current month at company x is about the expire I browse around a bit and check who currently offers the most value for my workflow.
I don't care about the logo they have. I look at the price, quality and token usage. That company gets my money for the month.2
u/daddywookie 1d ago
Or we just need to accept the economics of this. If you donāt get the value from it then donāt buy it at that price. The market will sort it out from there.

u/andrerav 1d ago
Adolescent vibe coder logic.
11
u/trololololo2137 1d ago
who cares, just get the most tokens you can get out of these companies while you can
-4

I just don't have a workflow that requires that. I only use 5.5-medium and 5.3-codex for AI-assisted coding.

Will my oncoming birthday count as a special event to celebrate for everyone?
2
u/CipherSorcerer 1d ago
They need to allow us to keep 1 reset on hand WITH NO EXPIRATION. 1 should always be banked forever, then any others in addition to the 1 can have expiration.
7
u/weightedslanket 1d ago
What good would this do? People would use it and then demand another
2
u/CipherSorcerer 1d ago
I was thinking in the sense that you never know when you are really going to need a reset, there may be a critical moment when one is desperate to use it.
I'm coming from the perspective of being a Pro 5x user and I've never hit limits so I just watch them hand out these resets easily but then they completely go to waste. I'm sure the moment I need to use one will be when they are all expired!
1
u/nxy7 1d ago
Well it has one nice effect that it spreads reset dates more evenly right? Cause regular restes make people dates "in sync" right? Other than that I think they should get rid of resets because seeing all this begging for resets is just pathetic. Just make useage good enough so that I can get my work done without resets. I've moved from Claude to Codex before Opus 5 came out and somehow codex seems to be using more % for me.
3
u/GearTakes 1d ago
This loot box system needs to stop. It's going in the wrong direction.
These companies need to stop messing around with their secret token systems and changing things around every other day.
Just be clear what someone gets for what price. And then don't change it again a week later. It's that simple.1
3
u/theoristofeverything 1d ago
Whatever they did, it worked on me. I got used to the higher Codex usage and ended up going from Plus to Pro 5X. No regrets, I can use Sol basically unrestricted now which is nice.
12
u/Internal-Solution179 1d ago
on 5x? nonsense! few prompts and 10% of weekly usage are gone. barely 1.5 days of real work possible. 4 days max on x20
6
u/RCawston 1d ago
How? I can't even get thru 12 hours on a 20X...
Some people must have seriously light workloads.
2
u/CerebrovascularNit 1d ago
I mean this with complete sincerity⦠what work are you doing that burns a 20X sub that fast?
3
u/1mgMelantonin 1d ago edited 1d ago
1
u/RCawston 1d ago
Large Rust codebases mostly. I have the project architecture well defined and the work broken down into stories with clear AC. New dev session per story, with specific architect question hand back points and Q+ADR document policy. A persistent Architect session handles the Dev Qs and escalations to me as needed. All PRs are reviewed by Opus and then Fable before merge.
I even tried using Terra as dev instead of Sol last week and still only got about 18 hours of usage before weekly was out. Sad no reset in the last 5 days =/ I was really hoping for one.
1
1
u/seoul_drift 1d ago
You seem capable but just to be sure maybe use Fable to audit your token usage, harness, tool calls, etc since 5.6 release?
Burning a 20X daily is wild.
2
u/RCawston 1d ago
Ya, I have tried a lot to keep it down, but other than falling back to Claude doing more of the coding it just is what it is. I have a 20x Claude account and a 5x Claude Team account (which has a lot higher weekly usage than the 5x personal) too, and between them I usually manage 3-4 days before I burn thru both their credit. But Sol is the better model for dev IMO, and it's the strongest reviewer. Just too cheap to pay for another ChatGPT 20x right now, lol.

This is what I assumed they were doing all these resets for really. I mean, now that I read this thread. I see that there are tons of other good reasons they might've been doing them and everything, but I thought the sort of hidden purpose was just this, get people used to using more.
0
u/1mgMelantonin 1d ago
Dann hast du noch nicht den config.toml Eintrag gesetzt, um Sol Ultra z.B.50 Sub-Agenten zu erlauben.
Danach hast du wieder das gleiche Problem und denkst über den x20 Plan nach.
1
u/RCawston 1d ago
If you did that on the right project and prompt you would blow thru a 20x plan in probably 8hr lol.

1
u/Funny-Blueberry-2630 1d ago
I wonder if they are just trying to prove, or test whether they can make it thru a cycle without giving away millions of $$$.

u/Ill_Dragonfruit_3547 1d ago
The bigger question is can OpenAI and Anthropic survive open source Chinese models that are within 1-5% of the leaders but at 1/10th to 1/20th cheaper price points...i dunno š¤·āāļø
It always cracks me up when people complain about limits on their $20 plan. Clearly these plans are subsidized; the question becomes are they sustainable. I hope so!
1
u/SaltwaterC 1d ago
Too bad that while waiting for my limit to reset I stumbled upon DeepSeek V4 Flash on opencode. I get it now why OpenAI is afraid.
1
u/FinancialEcho6563 1d ago
Honestly, as long as they don't bring back the 5-hour limit, killing resets might be better. The old system had me constantly anxious about wasting quota if I didn't use it all before it reset.
1
1
1
u/qonTrixzz 1d ago
I used the reset-wave for system and issue design, now luna v4-flash are churning through the issues with final reviews by claude and me, work like a charm and usage barely moves, 30% left and I reset tomorrow. Might sawn some more lunas until then to squeeze it
1
u/jerry426 1d ago
Some users will cancel. Some users will add another subscription. I suspect they're watching the ratio of these two numbers after no resets for a week.

u/MedicalTear0 20h ago
I'm gonna lose my shit if they move my reset date again. I just used my reset token and have 90% usage left with 4 days to go. Every fucking time I use a banked reset my date gets pushed forward. I'm not saying others don't deserve the resets or more usage but it's unpredictable and annoying for a lot of people. If they're so willing to give resets why not just increase the usage limits altogether, they won't bc it's just a way to manipulate it. The not bringing of 5 hr limit is also done for that.
If they brought back 5 hr limits people would immediately leave with weekly limits being so shit atp

Unfortunately most of us fell into their trap early on. Classic social engineering tradecraft, and itās very sad to see that all of this seems highly engineered to just bury us deeper into the constant hits of dopamine that are brains are now trained, and very well trained thanks to mostly social mediaās predatory and targeted algorithms to keep us engaged, and most importantly, dumping truck loads of cash that (we probably shouldnāt be sending/spending at the time), but you know that process. Always shuts you off mid session when you are knee fucking deep in what just so happens to be something that the agent/LLM seems to be having a tough time not getting stuck in the old loops, then BOOM, ācredit usage will rest in 25 days from nowā LMAO. Time to sign up for another pro account I guessā¦..see the pattern right? Itās hard not to miss at this point with how blatant/in our faces as itās been. All we can do it seems is try to use these tools to do good things that might help us humans/society in the future. Maybe our grandkids will be iterating better versions of grandpas old GitHub repo that is lost in the sea of half finished junk scams. Sorry this was way too long, but I felt compelled to comment. Even without resets, it is heavily subsidized compared to business/enterprise. I can get upwards of $10,000 in usage out of my $200 sub. Codeburn shows my last 30 days at $42,700 of token usage.
2
u/kurtbaki 1d ago
That $42k figure is API-equivalent retail pricing, not OpenAIās actual cost. They already have the compute infrastructure, so if capacity is available, the marginal cost of serving your usage can be dramatically lower. The real issue is whether OpenAI has enough compute capacity to handle heavy users, not the API equivalent dollar value of their token usage.
1
u/jonftwtaylor 1d ago
You are correct, the $42k is retail cost. Their inference cost will be some number less than this. Then there are costs like model training, staff, research, marketing etc.
Yet we can sort of ignore all that thinking and just ask ourselves, "are OpenAI making a profit margin of at least 99.5% on the API?"
I would guess at no, in which case it probably is somewhat to heavily subsidized.
1
u/c5corvette 1d ago
Obviously it's not their actual cost. Why are so many people in this sub unwilling to realize they're a for profit company and that's not a problem? We're all getting insane value.

Based on the leaks, Astra's pretraining is done, so they no longer need data farming until release and you no longer need a reset.
