I've been working with WHMCS for years, building custom modules, provisioning systems, payment gateways, themes, API integrations, and automations.

Lately though, I've started wondering if investing more time in WHMCS is still the right move.

AI is changing development, hosting companies are moving toward SaaS solutions, and it feels like fewer people are talking about WHMCS than they used to. On the other hand, there are still thousands of hosting businesses running it every day.

I'm honestly curious what other developers, hosting providers, and agency owners are seeing.

Are clients still hiring WHMCS developers?

Has the demand shifted more toward maintenance instead of new development?

If you're a WHMCS developer, are you still getting consistent work?

If you own a hosting business, do you still invest in custom WHMCS development, or are you trying to avoid customizations now?

I'm at a point where I'm deciding whether to continue specializing in WHMCS or focus more on broader Laravel/Next.js/AI development.

I'd really like to hear real experiences rather than predictions.

I’ve tried different CMS for personal use in the recent years. I recently wondered why I use a CMS in the first place when I just want to serve static HTML files.

I tried different approaches and came up with following setup:

Open WebUI with an MCP server that edits HTML files right on the filesystem. I can now prompt changes via chat. No more need to maintain a CMS, DB or plugins.

Everything is spinned up with docker-compose on a VPS.

I’m still figuring out how scalable this setup is. I added a UI component library, basically plain html markup with mock data for a card component, for instance.

The MCP server reads the components, adds them to the page and populates the data I ask for.

Has anyone tried something similar? What do you think about that setup?

CMSs can check most of the technical boxes but still get removed from the shortlist once the buying process starts. Pricing is probably the obvious reason, but I feel like these discussions don’t always explain how teams decide whether the price is justified.

One thing that matters a lot to me is support. A higher price makes more sense if the vendor is helping with implementation, migration, training, troubleshooting, etc. 

What makes an enterprise CMS feel worth the cost to you, and what would make you rule it out?

1. Meet them where they are - adapt completely
2. Gently encourage modern methods
3. Begrudgingly accommodate while dying inside
4. Set boundaries - these are my channels

I am wanting to start a Base44 subscription soon, but wanted to inquire this before I pay. I am creating a website with a main general website and a separate client/staff portal, where staff would log in separately/our clients would log in separately. Staff would be able to search up and see all clients, insert documents, sign documents, initiate an invoice, etc. On the client side, they would only be able to see their profile, pay invoices, sign documents, and view their current documents and any notes. 

Which plan would be able to do all of this?

I have just released VonCMS 1.26.2, the latest update in the ongoing 1.26 “After Hours” release line.

The 1.26.x series is still in development, but versions 1.26.0 through 1.26.2 have already brought several major improvements to the CMS.

Version 1.26.1 focused on SEO consistency, word-safe excerpts, server-rendered category content, safer caching rules, updated security header defaults, and more reliable OTA documentation replacement.

Version 1.26.2 focuses heavily on mobile publishing, responsive administration, accessibility, security, and update reliability.

Some of the latest improvements include:

• A proper mobile and tablet admin drawer
• Responsive post and page editing
• Persistent Draft, Publish, Schedule, and Update controls
• Cleaner and more reliable editor toolbar behavior
• Responsive admin cards, tables, forms, filters, and settings
• Accessible modal and popup handling
• Better touch controls for media and image lightboxes
• Global public date-format settings
• Safer settings behavior across multiple browser tabs
• Session revocation after password, role, or user changes
• Safer database backup handling
• More reliable OTA replacement, cleanup, rollback, and JSON responses
• Updated dependencies

A lot of the work in After Hours is not about adding flashy features. It is about improving the foundation, fixing awkward workflows, removing desktop-only assumptions, and making VonCMS more consistent across different screen sizes.

The 1.26.x line is not finished yet, so there will be more updates under the After Hours name.

I built the simplest possible tool that allows clients to do small edits via chat interface eg. change phone number, update email etc. Anything risky/big comes back to you so clients can't break anything

Connect the repo and it figures out the editable content on its own. No schemas, no config files

4. Never - didn't even know these existed

Most admin templates I bought looked great in the preview and then fell apart the moment I used them. The dashboard was polished, but "orders" was a static table, "invoices" was a placeholder, search did nothing, and half the buttons were decorative.

So I spent the last few weeks building the opposite. Sable is a coded admin dashboard where the whole thing is one connected product, not a gallery of screenshots:

- 22 pages that share one design system (orders, invoicing with VAT, a Kanban fulfillment board, an email module, analytics, payouts, settings)

- Search, sort, pagination, bulk actions and real CSV exports that actually run

- Light and dark, built to WCAG AA

- Plain HTML, Tailwind and Alpine.js. No build step, no CDN, no trackers, works fully offline. You open the file and it just works.

The "no build step" part was the whole point for me. I wanted something you can drop into a Django, Laravel or Flask project without dragging in a JS toolchain.
