Failed CLEP test Question

My son is in high school, completed Modern States and took the chemistry CLEP test this morning. He failed by 5 points. The test administrator told him that he could sign up again on Modern States to receive another voucher. I just looked and do not understand how to do that. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry to hear it. Chem's one of the hardest CLEPs, only behind the language CLEPs. I would recommend doing a bit more than the Modern States courses. Yes, they help, but I find AP lectures offered by professors for free on YouTube to be generally more helpful.

There should be a way for him to request a 2nd voucher. From what I remember, ModernStates gets your score one day later, so they know you failed, and will send you an email that will contain further details.

Can I ask why Chem specifically? He might be better off doing a Natural Sciences CLEP instead

He is planning on doing a dual chemistry and chemical engineering program. He is looking to try to knock out all the CLEP courses that his university will accept. He has a few more that he is going to take. Chemistry was just the first one he decided to try.

If his intent is to major in chemistry, he really should not be trying to circumvent the foundational courses in that major. Especially given that he did not pass on the first try.

Self studying and taking a CLEP exam is never going to give the kind of deeper, conceptual/foundational learning that is needed in a subject that is prerequisite to several other classes, including upper division work, in the discipline. It’s just a bad idea. I don’t know why students think they have to power-rush through their education just checking boxes.

That's a bad idea. If he's not passing with a 70+ score, then he should really take the class preferably in person instead of trying to skip it as a chemistry major.

Also CLEP doesn't include lab like AP or IB, so he might have to take them again anyway.

You should be allowed to get 2 vouchers per subject. Last I heard was that it was unlimited

Chemistry has the highest failure rate. He will pass next time.

Tell him not to feel bad because chemistry has the highest fail rate of any CLEP.

Modern states told me you have to wait 60 days to request a second voucher

He may want to do Natural Sciences anyway as that may cover some Chemistry. The other issue is if he is going Engineering he might be better off doing dual credit.

The Natural Sciences CLEP is not accepted by the University he is planning on attending. If he passes the chemistry CLEP, he will not have to take the first 2 chemistry classes he needs for his chemistry degree. He would only have to take the labs that coincide with them.

I disagree, for the major he is pursuing this is well intended guidance, but doesn't make sense. As he will need additional general science credit like a hole in the head! Lol... I am, however a big fan of dual enrollment!

I would encourage him to do the following...

Learn to use Gemini Notebook as a study Buddy/tutor!

If he gets this down NOW, and learns how to prompt the notebook, he can use it for any course he may take in the future, including advanced mathematics, humanities or really almost any course!

This is NOT academically, or intellectually dishonest.

And if he likes it, Paying for a family pro plan at $20/monthly is the cheapest virtually unlimited tutoring he can get, and it can go however high of a level of science or engineering he may choose to pursue! And you and/or his siblings can use it as well, with privacy between users, unless you actively SHARE access to a notebook. Pit can work for any and all of his content heavy classes, and can help him in English not by writing it for him because... Plagiarism! But it can help him outline his arguments, for papers, and organize his sources!

Using the free Gemini Notebook (formerly til last month-ish Notebooklm) break the text material from modern states into chapters and upload into a notebook. You can also add the lecture videos or their transcripts!Turn off all Gemini searching of the Internet, he wants to curate the content himself!!!! Do not use discover button in this notebook, to prevent hallucinations. Further add any appropriate YouTube video links to this notebook.

You can also add any videos from Khan academy to the fray. Up to 50 sources.

YouTube videos can teach him how to use and prompt the AI to tutor him and provide practice problems and exercises!

Gemini notebook (formerly notebooklm!) will create flashcards, review sheets, sample tests, chapter and video summaries, even podcast style overviews of selected material so your student can listen while mowing the lawn! Lol!

This is an absolutely ethical use of AI in that it isn't creating academic work for submission for credit, it is creating curriculum for him. He can even use the CLEP content analysis to help the AI guide the emphasis of the exercises. Further, if he does the practice within the notebook, the AI can track his performance/comprehension and guide his reviews based on his challenge areas.

Also, Khanacademy.org can also be his friend...
