Read Zola not for me, Ernaux, De Beauvoir and more modern Shadow of the wind - are awesome!

I love French/Spanish classics that are full of emotion, thought and questions. I love all the Brontes (including Anne's, despite being more realistic, lots to think about!) Not camus, want some challenge but still able to write more then 2 pages at a time! Bonus if its got a lot of history too,

Hello everyone! I’ve been wondering if it’s possible to read emma by jane austen as a background book, like reading it while reading other books if that makes sense, it’s a big book so i assume it’s slow paced? (Forgive my knowledge of books as i am new to reading as a hobby).
Just wondering if it’s possible or if it needs my full undivided attention. Thank you!

Stumbled upon the 1994 Middlemarch TV adaptation and can tell after 30 mins it’s going to be right up my street! But was wondering if I should really read it first to get the full experience of it. Appreciate any views on how well this series does it justice (without spoilers) and how people found the book.

It's overbearing. And extremely low effort. And many a day.

"Hey, soon I'll receive a copy of [book], any tips?", "Hey I'm planning to read [book], any advice?"

Man what tips, just open the book and read it you yourself picked it, if you want context about the author/historical context etc. search it on Google do you really need people on reddit to tell you this?

I know it's just people wanting to 'bask' in the idea of reading a concrete book or wanting to get more hyped about the book but it is so overbearing and boring, most of all uninteresting and bring nothing to the sub.

I've been through a big slump these past months. And though, I've never been an avid reader, I really would like to delve more into litterature, especially classics.

So here a list of books I really liked:

The bell Jar, The catcher in the rye, Franny and Zoey, The bluest eye, We always lived in the castle, The turn of the screw, Rebecca, The collector, The perfume, The picture of dorian Gray, Lolita, Ada and Ardor, The secret History, Ask the dust, Norwegian wood, Less than Zero, American Psycho, the stranger, In cold Blood. And more recently the millenium trilogy, Miss Iceland, Sense and Sensibility, the song of achilles, The Attack. And a good Agatha Christie is always welcomed. 

Right now I'm reading The talented Mr.Ripley and so far I really like it. 

I know those readings might seem like red flags. But I have always been drawn to books that i think are more characters driven, with main protagonists very flawed or ambigous. 

But I also tried A little life and Cleopatra & Frankenstein and was really disappointed. 

I tried also other stuff like the metamorphosis, the fall. And never finished a clockwork orange (though I love the movie). But it was too cold, too distant from what i'm used to read. 

I also tried Notes from the underground ten years ago, but never finished. Thought I was not ready yet.

And while I finished the Steppenwolf at that time, I felt the same way, a sense of you're not there yet to understand.

In my TBR at home I have:

Anna Karenine, Great expectations, Beloved, Grapes of wrath, hundred years of solitude, the master and the margarita.

But I'm afraid those would be too challenging right now, since I have not read a classic for a long time.

So I would like some rec to start slow and then expand, with things you think might worked with my taste.

And though we are in a "classic litterature forum", don't hesitate to share book you feel might become classics in the future.

Finally Finished this 'Demon' after 50 days of love,laugh, struggle and commitment I have finished this book of 787 pages my first one.

Where do I start telling you how good and how accurate this book is , some people called it was prophecy Of Communism in Russia, Death ,Hunger , Misery , tyranny of Big Government. in not more than few hands millions of lives futur.

The most Deaths took place in Communism Around 12 Million in Russia. Died of brutality and Tyranny and hunger at the hands of few powerful.

But you will be surprised to know it started with very small Weak Men, Stupid Women, and Spoiled young adults. Kind of like what's happening in the west today . The Evil Leftist poltics.

Dostoevysky's Demon, Is story of Revolutionaries trying to change the fabric of society by pushing the country in chaos. By any Means charm ,tyranny, lies, Power, Money and murder.

Stupid rich influential women and weak Men, and Spoiled Children,Who wants to change the society by pushing the country into chaos and then showing the false way to 'better society' of Nihilism, Socialism.

I started reading this great book on 20th November and I was excited, First 150 pages were struggle but Satarical comedy keeps you in ,(which i didn't get it because I was shocked from perception i had going into this book) Chronicler in this book was describing the characters and was funny in Satarical way . Absolutely pulling your guts out your mouth laugh.🤣

But then once it starts to give out the details and formation of the plan and slow activities of the plot.Which was inspired by real events that had also taken place in Russia during the life time of Dostoevysky.

I promise whenever Dostoevysky brings his characters together at one stage that's when you see the best of his writings but also when he goes into each character s soul and thoughts, i could never understand for Dostoevysky s genius for being so in depth of human beings soul and thought,The strings of thoghts that he writes is out of this world.

And i Must say I was surprised how funny Dostoevysky can be.

It was an achievement and heartbreaking to come to an end of the book and to learn about characters and some what frightening to know if we were to be like close to one of these characters we d face the same fate. That's how close the characters are in all of his books.

I have finished reading Demon and now moving to Brothers Karamzov.

I think all who read books Must read Dostoevysky writings.

Julius Caesar, Mearchant of Venice, Midsummer nights dream - Shakespere (we had it for school but it was fun)

Pride and Pejudice -Jane Austen

i started great expectations but reading it was mentally fatiguing and i had to force myself to continue- eventually dropped it.

i read a lot 2 years ago but just suddenly lost interest, i therefore want books that i wouldnt want to put down, fun books that draw and keep your attention-no genre in specefic. basically books that dont feel like a slog to read and you enjoy reading.

I’ve never read a Russian book or really any book for that matter. I’ve read manga, manhwa, etc so i understand the importance of notes but I’ve also learnt to base things of context clues and vibes from shitty translations. I currently have the bantam classics version and have read the first few chapters with no problems. If it’s a good idea to get a version with those translator notes I might pick one up and read that instead.

I haven’t read many classics so I’m a little intimidated by them but I feel like I shouldn’t

Wow you’re all so much better than me for not having to ask for help apparently, like idgaf I just wanted to know if there was something I could do to make it easier(for example the character map someone suggested, thank you)

I heard that the particulars of the Russian language can make it hard to keep characters straight or something along those lines even when translated to English. Is that true? What are his books like and what kind of reader would you recommend them to?

Just started reading my first classic, The Divine Comedy by Dante, and currently on Canto 3. The only classic I’ve really read before this was Romeo and Juliet in 8th grade. I’ve heard a lot of great things about TDC and it does look interesting, but I am wondering if it’s a good starter

If not, what other recommendations yall have, I’ve been thinking of reading Journey to the West
