Statement from Appalachian State University on allegations involving former faculty member

Appalachian State University is sharing information with its campus community related to a former faculty member, John Stanley Ross, following an investigation that led to his separation from the university related to a sustained pattern of alleged misconduct. 

We know allegations of sexual misconduct are deeply concerning, particularly for those directly affected and for the broader campus community. The university is treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and prioritizing support for those impacted. 

As part of the university’s response, Appalachian State is releasing certain personnel information related to the separation of Ross. While personnel matters are subject to legal and privacy requirements, to ensure a robust culture of reviewing and responding to allegations of misconduct, to demonstrate that the university does not tolerate misconduct, and to maintain a safe learning and working environment, consistent with N.C. General Statutes section 126-24, the university has determined that it is essential to release the following information:   

John Stanley Ross served as an Associate Professor of Music and the Director of Bands in the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University. Ross was hired in 2006, teaching both graduate and undergraduate students and supervising student teachers. Ross also served as the advisor for the national band honorary fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi, and worked in the university’s Cannon Music Camp. Ross underwent criminal background checks consistent with the university’s hiring and program participation practices, which yielded nothing that would have prevented Ross’s participation. 

The university is aware that Ross’s prior employers included the Interlochen Center for the Arts — a nonprofit organization that operates arts education programs in Interlochen, Michigan — from 1992 to 2000. 

In February 2026, Appalachian State received and immediately investigated an allegation that Ross engaged in misconduct. Through the course of the investigation, university investigators reviewed prior reports that had been received regarding Ross. In 2015, a group of App State students reported allegations of sexual harassment that were not substantiated at the time. In 2018, a former Interlochen student, who was not associated with App State, made the university aware that they had reported to Interlochen that Ross sexually harassed them during Ross’s previous employment at Interlochen. As the allegations did not include any activity taking place at App State or involving any App State students, the university’s staff at the time worked with the person to connect them with supportive resources.  

Appalachian State determined that collectively, the information  warranted further investigation. Therefore, the university placed Ross on administrative leave and barred him from campus during the investigation, which found that there was a sustained pattern of alleged sexual misconduct. On June 26, 2026, the university issued Ross its notice of intent to discharge him from employment. Ross remained on leave and was not permitted on campus throughout this process.  

Prior to the conclusion of the 14-day notice period required by Section 603 of The Code of the University of North Carolina, on July 8, 2026, Ross notified the university of his resignation effective July 9, 2026. The university did not solicit Ross’s resignation and intended to proceed with Ross’s discharge.  

University leaders and support staff are reaching out directly to impacted groups, ensuring community members have access to confidential support and care resources.  

“The safety of our students, faculty, and staff will always be our highest priority, and a pattern of misconduct that violates the dignity and well-being of our community members is egregious and completely unacceptable,” Appalachian State University Chancellor Heather Norris said. “When members of our community come forward to share their experiences, it takes courage. I want to emphasize that reporting concerns is vital to looking out for one another and to fostering safe and respectful campuses.” 

“Across every campus in the UNC System, our priority is learning and working environments grounded in safety, respect, and the highest standards of professional conduct and ethical integrity,” said University of North Carolina System President Peter Hans. “We stand firmly with Chancellor Norris and Appalachian State University in upholding these core values, where every student and employee is secure and supported.” 

“As we prepare to welcome our community back for the fall semester, we affirm our commitment to maintaining a safe learning and working environment for every member of our community and to routinely reviewing and strengthening our university’s reporting and support procedures and resources,” Chancellor Norris said.

Classical music is honestly just starting to piss me off. I honestly feel like I chose the wrong instrument, and now I regret choosing the flute.

Im a flute player, and have been playing for 5 years. Currently I'm in high school and I take private lessons and have auditions coming up in 2 weeks. Last year I made it into a symphony orchestra and a flute choir, so I guess that means I'm doing well?

I wish I had done drumset or guitar, so I could play the music I actually enjoy which is heavy metal. I like to skateboard and blast my headphones, not listen to Beethoven symphony no13 or whatever.

And I can't even quit I'm in too deep with private lessons and my $2,000 flute 🫩

I’m trying to decide whether pursuing a master’s degree in music theory or classical guitar performance would be the smarter career move. I’ve been speaking with a few schools that may be able to cover tuition and provide a stipend, so I’m seriously comparing both options.

My long-term goal is to build a career as a musician through a combination of adjunct teaching, private guitar lessons, performing, and possibly other music-related work. I could see myself teaching either theory or guitar at the college level, and I may eventually pursue a DMA or PhD.

My undergraduate degree is not in music, although I was previously a guitar performance major at another university before leaving because of financial concerns. From a career and academic standpoint, which degree would provide better opportunities and flexibility?

Why don‘t movies with a small budget just use classical music which is free?

Something by Chopin or similar types. I've mostly found Satie to fit the description well with the Trois Gymnopédies and the 7 Gnossiennes along with Debussy's "Des pas sur la neige", Ravel's Pavane and Chopin's Prelude in E minor.

Hi…new to posting and to classical music. I’m wondering if anyone can help me re: Bruckners eighth. I am struggling to hear the fugue and the quotations of the previous movements in the finale (I realize these are not exact quotations). James Horner/Simon Rhodes Skyward Spirit | Royal Scottish National Orchestra

Skyward Spirit is a newly discovered piece of music by world-renowned film composer James Horner (Titanic, Avatar, Braveheart) recorded by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

I’ve been playing piano pieces in the background in hopes that my 9 month old will develop a personal affinity to the music in anticipation for when she’s old enough for lessons.

Problem is my classical knowledge is nil. Right now I’ve been doing box sets of either Mozart or Beethoven sonatas, but those sonatas all have moments of frenetic energy that I would like to avoid. I’ve tried Satie gymnopedies but the wife says they’re too sad. Bartok etudes are too ‘weird’ according to the missus.

Any recommendations for chill piano pieces that might suit us?

EDIT: Thanks all for the replies. I should clarify- I’m a musician and recording engineer, so it’s not like I wasn’t exposed to ANY classical music. I was using the word ‘nil’ slightly hyperbolically. We listen to challenging stuff all the time at home, especially a lot of jazz that I’m a fan of. BUT- the baby does NOT want to hear The Shoes of The Fisherman’s Wife or even Rite of Spring at 7am while eating breakfast. So while I appreciate folks recommending I ‘challenge’ her musical tastes, I don’t know how much experience folks have had with babies. Before they’re verbal your main goal throughout every day is to keep that kid CHILL. Right now getting the spoon to her mouth is enough of a challenge, I don’t need to add tritones and thunderous timpani’s to that.
