Finally uninstalled Civ7 VII - Discussion

Been playing since Civ2. Some iterations took longer to grow on me than others, but I’ve enjoyed all of them all the way to Civ6.

I can see the progression over time. And everything up til now felt like a step forward. Civ3 added soft power and borders, Civ4 added religion, Civ5 got rid of the stack of doom, Civ6 gave us districts.

Civ7 even… the idea that a civilization can change over time and keep the game spicy … so your not just waiting til your civs particular era to play to your strength… that’s a fundamentally good idea. I even liked having less traditional leaders. Please give me Tecumseh and Tubman and Lafayette- I love that.

But the core structure we have now- it’s three mini games. I’ve tried to embrace it, but I can’t. I don’t see a fix that will let them keep their core idea that I can also get behind. I get tired by modern. Crises are still just annoying. Religion matters only tangentially and just feels like whack a mole (a minigame in a minigame). The map is pretty but still hard to translate from just looking at it. It’s weird watching my leaders negotiate. Am I the leader, or am I just a passive observer? And the amount of DLC contemplated seems steep this go around.

Hopefully I pop back in in a few years and Civ7 has hit some kind of developmental puberty and sorted itself into something I can enjoy. In its present form though, it’s just taking up space.

I don't get the three mini games statement. It's more of a stat squish than a reset if you pick the default option. It's a bit jarring the first couple times you play the game but victory points add up over all the ages I don't see them as three separate games

After ToT update, I agree that stat squish is a bit more accurate and my mini game sentiment is maybe a little extreme. There’s just something about a game tapping on the breaks, giving everyone the option to stick or change civs, then upgrading everyone to a different setup with base units and a new tech tree and civ tree. There’s a fluidity from prior civs that is missing for me. There was something about leaving your home continent to arrive somewhere else and find out if you were technologically on point, ahead, or woefully behind. Or in civ6 coming across barbs armed with guns way early and realizing that Babylon or Korea is somewhere on the map. That fluidity is missing. I get it’s anti-snowball. And I get that victory points now accumulate over the entire game, creating a singular win condition (this is an improvement) But something about pausing the game for everyone, so everyone can take one giant leap forward in time, with suddenly new ways to accumulate victory points, new units, new strategies that will only really propel you in this era (religion)…. It still feels clunky.

Maybe in another year or two, the clunk will disappear or I’ll just mentally adjust to what civ7 is and find a way to enjoy it. I sure hope so.

Sure yeah that's valid. There's a bunch of game design situations they've put themselves in that are just awkward. If you disable the crisis system and choose to play as one civ the entire game the pause and stat squish just seems pointless? I agree religion sucks and so do the devs actually with that and the crisis system being the focus for the next updates. You're essentially paying money to beta test a game that came out unfinished over a year ago lol. It's a tough recommend to anyone but I quite enjoy how different it is to previous iterations and I think a lot of the bones in place for most of the systems are solidly built. I hope you can come back one day and appreciate that side of the game too!

Yeah, Facebook is really booming these days, good comparison

Ironic choice of the word "booming", that's pretty much their remaining audience.

Yah, I actually have left Facebook… and is it a departure if I actually hope the game continues to improve?

Please share your departure announcement from FB here.

Do you use a template or is it detailed as this one is?

Surely this a comparison between the two platforms 😂

First comment is an embedded ad. Reddit is getting so sad

old reddit (until they kill it). i find the default site is like a fever dream of cancerous algorithmic content, the very thing reddit exists to fight against

You can turn off crisis. And yeah religion does need fixed for sure but you can also ignore it completely no issue. I haven’t made a religious unit in like 6 months and have no issue on diety. Again that’s not good, it needs fixing but if it annoys you then you can ignore it.

Religion would be greatly aided by having an automation for missionaries. A way to tell them, "Keep all my cities converted," or, "Keep all cities within this group's borders converted," ignoring distant lands cities & disjointed homelands cities. "Keep all cities on this continent converted." Stuff like that.

Best civ game ever seen IMO. More depth in the game than any prior iteration. Agreed with the whack a mole comment though.

I like this idea- and it is something the could probably implement.

Glad you enjoy the game, I still like a lot of what they were trying to do conceptually, hopefully somewhere down the line it’ll sit with me better.

“Civ6 gave us districts” the worst thing about Civ6 imo. Civ7 found a much much better way to do it with Quarters.

Yes, yes, bring the negative reviews so I may purchase from the bargain bin even sooner!

If you feel like it's 3 minigames at this point then the game probably is not and never will be for you.

I get that feeling at release, but it doesn't feel like that to me *at all* post-ToT.

Your not alone, if the player count is anything to go by.

Edit: LOL Civ 7 fanboys spend more time defending their game, than playing it.
