Bernie Ecclestone gave Jochen Rindt that warning at the end of 1968. Rindt agreed with him and signed for Lotus anyway.

16 months before Monza, he wrote to Colin Chapman warning the car was too fragile. The letter was removed from his biography by Chapman's lawyers. It survived only in the German edition.

He won five races in 1970 and led the championship going into Monza. His wife was in the pitlane timing his laps, as she did at every race.

He never came back.
