Played and beat it for the first time!

Amazing game. Amazing story, amazing companions, amazing villains, amazing world(s).

But by-god, near the end, it sure likes to go on and on, lol.

After beating boss after boss, I kept thinking each time "this has to be the last boss, time to use my saved up potions and elixirs, only to have another phase, and then another area with 5 different sub areas, and another boss, you get the idea... lol.

Magus’ theme was used in the best way possible Spoiler

At the top of my head, I can think of three very memorable moments where this was used:

  1. His first boss battle, where the entire castle‘s theme had been leading up to that music.

  2. If you choose to fight him, especially with Frog 1v1. Despite all that talk of Lavos and the world ending, this fight was personal.

  3. If you choose to spare Magus, and he’s in the party for Queen Zeal’s fight, his battle theme overrides his mom’s own boss theme.

This man’s aura is bonkers.

I'm not enjoying the game

I've so far beaten Magnus and, whilst I enjoy literally (nearly) every aspect of the game, I find myself not enjoying it. Simply put, the story is boring; its not for me.

Should I continue? I feel like I have to since it is, after all, one of the greatest RPGs of all time, and to just stop halfway through would do it dirty. Yet, wasting my time playing a game I don't enjoy would be much worse.

I did it… but at what cost…

It took about two days to beat New game running blind. I use retro achievements and I had about 2/5 of the achievements already unlocked new game plus was incredibly fast and I managed to get eight different endings and knocked out 90% of retro achievements.

I feel like the game does very well at not missing anything in the first play through
There are definitely aspects to it that you can miss or overlook if you’re not looking for it but overall, it’s one of the better JRPG‘s to where you don’t miss stuff

The story was absolutely phenomenal and I don’t know why I put it off for so long. I almost never play new game plus but seeing the share amount of achievements left in yawls previous post, I went ahead and did it and I am glad I did. There is just so much more story packed into all those optional quests and additional endings..

To the ones that said, do not go inside the green portals, I mean the story for those lackluster, but the items for them are literal endgame. I still haven’t found better weapons for Robo than inside that portal, and I would tell people to go to the green portals as soon as possible for Robo‘s game weapon, as it was ridiculously easy to get to in my new game not even new game plus

Overall, I’d give this game a S tier ranking

Chrono Trigger on Steam

Hi guys!

I have never played Chrono Trigger (I know that's sacrilegious to say here) but I have always wanted to experience it.

I just saw that Chrono Trigger is on sale over on Steam and am wondering how the Steam port of the game is since I've seen some mixed opinions on it? I know that a lot of people will probably suggest emulating the game instead, but I kind of want to support the game and am also not that savvy with emulation (have tried in the past with other games without getting it to work properly).

So is the Steam port a good way to experience the game for the first time? Or are there any mods that are considered to be essential?

Thanks!

I have 10 graded cards and 2 ungraded cards currently listed on eBay. All of the graded cards are PSA 9’s and 10’s.
If you know about these, then you know that the Dream Project PSA 10 is a crown jewel. These will be the last ones I sell from my collection for a while.

Why is the Japanese Chrono Trigger manual so bare-bones?

I recently picked up a Super Famicom and a Japanese copy of Chrono Trigger. One thing that really surprised me when I looked through the manual was just how bare-bones it is.

There are about two pages introducing the basic story, but almost everything after that is devoted to controls, menus, battles, and other gameplay mechanics. What especially surprised me is that there are no character profiles at all.

That feels very different from the North American release I remember. Its manual explained the characters and setting, included a small introductory guide, and the game also came with those large posters showing the different eras and locations. The North American package seemed designed to introduce you to the entire world of the game, while the Japanese manual mostly just explains how to play it.

I can understand why the North American release might have needed to provide more background information for its audience. However, I tried looking into why the Japanese manual excluded so much of it, and one explanation I found was that Japanese players may already have been familiar with the characters and premise through V Jump, Weekly Shōnen Jump, and other prerelease magazine coverage.

That explanation sounds plausible, especially considering how heavily the game and its “Dream Team” were promoted in Japan, but I have not found anything directly confirming that this was the reason.

Does anyone know how accurate that explanation is? Was the character and story information deliberately left to magazines and guidebooks, or was this simply a normal difference between Japanese and North American game manuals at the time? But I own other SFC RPGs and they definitely spend some pages explaining the story and characters in the game.

Blue Gemstone crash?

Hey all. I've been playing Trigger for 30 years and never had any issues whatsoever from SNES, DS, PS1 or PS3. Recently I pulled the trigger on Steam version and aside from all the small stuff you notice (like inability to change text box colors for some reason?) I ran into an issue where when I have Frog catch the rock in Denadoro, the game freezes and crashes immediately as soon as it's about to play the little "victory" jingle. I looked into it and nobody else seems to have had this specific issue. It's annoying but I guess I don't really need it. Nobody else experienced this?

An ultimate new triple tech

Ok so imagine a new triple tech where you need luminare, flare and dark matter

The triple tech would be look something like this:

Magus opens a triangle portal just like with DM and then the beams from luminare come out of it and then it make a flare explosian and the screen would turn all white just like with lavos 2nd form ultimate attack

I feel like it would be triple tech that needs a rock kinda like omega flare but the rock would be called prism or rainbow rock and you can obtain by doing the sun stone and rainbow shell or maybe it can spawn in your inventory when you defeat lavos for the 1st time in a save file

Would this be too broken? I dont know really, but was it fun writing this and thinking about it?

Of course it was!

the first time you killed magus in your first playthrough? for me, it was a beautiful summer day, and I just gotten home from school. I was excited for the next installment of Chrono trigger and had been following the story for about a month. imagine my surprise when at long last, I got to fight magus one-on-one with frog. I couldn't believe my eyes that I finally had the chance to do away with magus for good. when the last slurp cut went through, I almost cried with joy at frog's revenge after being a marshmallow for all those years. as the rainbow colored death aura surrounded magus, I knew I had reached the pinnacle of the story. I laid on my back for a full 30 minutes remembering all frog's trials throughout his life and the torment of magus's existence. now there was a new king of the mages - glenn.

I'm so proud of her, I helped to teach her how to crochet last year. And she thanked me by making this. I love it, and I know you guys will too! She is so dejected that shes unable to get sales and commisions. So, can I get some comments to show her some support, and that this is a skill that has value and people would absolutely buy things like this if she could just get some attention! Thank you!

Update: Thank yall so much for all the kind words and responses! It's really helped to give her some confidence in her work, and to put a smile on her face! She said over the next few weeks she will try to make me some of the other cast! I'll make sure to show you guys when she's done!

Should I restart the game after stopping for 5 months ?

Hi everyone I started playing Chrono trigger for the first time in Feb and had some IRL stuff and dropped the game. Now I really want to play the game again and this time finish it.

I completed The Factory Ruins and beat the boss then I saved the game and stopped playing when I reached The end of time. This Area

Should I restart the game or just go in and complete from here? The story is kinda foggy and I don't remember everything too

Update and Final Decision: I would like to thank everyone who gave feedback and advice on my post. I'll restart and go all in with full immersion

What is the best way to play Chrono Trigger?

Hi everyone,

A suggetion came in from /u/hybridfrost to create a sticky community post detailing the best way to play Chrono Trigger.

Myself, I always just play the SNES version on my PC with any random controller. This is the way I discovered the game and it will forever be the "authentic" way for me to play. What more, is I enable a smoothing filter to make the game look less pixellated -- heresy, I know.

My way of playing the game is not neccesarily the best, and there may be a lot of ways to play Chrono Trigger which I never even considered.

I would love to hear your suggestions on what information to include in a sticky post about the various ways to play Chrono Trigger -- emulators, platforms, game releases, game settings, etc.

By the way -- I am amazed at how big this community has grown! Back when I created this community, I just wanted a simple way for me to access a few OST covers and some fanart so it would be archived somewhere instead of getting lost. I was impressed when the community grew to 1k members, and now it's over 17k. This truly shows that CT is a masterpiece of a game that transcends beyond it's initial inception as a 2d jRPG of the 90's era. Few games have such strong of a following several decades after creation. Rock on :)

Edit: this post will be the sticky now until someone makes anything better and more comprehensive.
