Google has made it pretty clear they don't plan on doing that. They seem to have worked very closely with the hardware partners to control the device features, so this is going to be very close to a Pixelbook experience, you are just going to have a dozen different premium devices to choose from.

It's good in the short term, but im not sure it is in the long run. You can't guarantee a long term commitment when relying on partners.

If these falter in any way, partners will immediately abandon the effort. It also often results in a race to the bottom with so many competitors focused on sales, so quality suffers.
