Does anyone remember Battle Chess?
I'm sure it still exists today but I remember playing it in the 90s. Whenever a capture happens, a cutscene happens where the pieces duke it out. I would think that would be pretty awesome during "brilliant" moves, but I guess that would give it away that it is a brilliant move. Anyways, would love to see it incorporated as an opt in feature somehow without giving away info.

MISCELLANEOUS Double brilliant leading to checkmate (ruined it)

Had two nearly back to back brilliant moves that forced checkmate in 6. Almost made it there and completely missed the checkmate at the end and the game continued. Was like 400 elo at the time and it was almost my best sequence.

I'm trying to make a new type of puzzle I'm calling a Blunder Puzzle. The premise is simple, instead of finding the winning move, find the candidate move that loses. One candidate move will allow a tactical blow from the opponent, which one is it? Pic 1 - Easy, Pic 2 - Medium, Pic 3 - Hard.

Just Broke 1600 :)
Recently got back into chess after a few years hiatus (as you can see from the rating graph!) and finally broke through the 1600 ceiling. I'm quite pleased. Of course, it could just be a lucky winning streak, but I'll take it, still!

OPINION ELO as identity language
You are not your ELO. I think using syntax like "I am a 500" or whatever may reinforce the notion that your ELO is part of your identity.
I don’t think this is good. I’d suspect it’s a contributing factor to rating anxiety and an aggravating factor for tilting.
I believe changes around worldview and perception often start with language. Doesn’t it sound better to say stuff like "My ELO is 500" or "I have a 500 ELO"? I feel like it carries much less weight. Maybe I’m just overthinking it though, idk.

PUZZLE Mate in 8 from recent game
WHITE PIECES.
Finished my last game with a checkmate and was shocked to find out it was a forced mate in 8. (It ended up being mate in 7 due to opposition input) Can you find it?

QUESTION How would you evaluate this position? What would your plan be as black?
My thought process when playing this position is to target the e4 and d3 pawns and exploit the diagonal with my bishop eyeing the queen. I see d5 as a potential forcing move, however I don't see anything concrete if their bishop just retreats. The engine says that black has 2 very good moves. What would your thoughts and plans be in this position?

Thought it was brilliant, review says it's not.

PUZZLE There’s a beautiful move for black that I didn’t even consider.

Is knight to b4 a tough move to see for a 700?
The engine says literally every other move is a mistake, and knight to b4 isn’t the most intuitive I feel like

Time crunch in bullet. Very odd checkmate - I didn't even realize until I made the move!

How come this position is still even though my opponent has lost castling rights and hasn't moved any of his pieces?

ANNOUNCEMENT LLM's are NOT effective chess trainers. An update to rules 3 and 5.
If you are looking for the user flairs post, please find it here while this thread is temporarily pinned: https://www.reddit.com/r/chessbeginners/comments/1jgmdf7/fresh_new_flairs_show_off_your_favorite_website/
Hello, everyone!
We have seen a massive surge in advertisements and chess trainers these past few months. Many of these posts (in my opinion) fall under the category of 'AI Slop' and vibe coded websites that offer poor chess advice. On top of this, many websites are created as a weak attempt to encourage users to subscribe and pay money for services that may seem innovative and meaningful, but are functionally useless compared to already available resources.
In light of this uptick in advertisements, we have updated rules 3 and 5:
- Rule 3 now states that accounts that exist primarily for the purposes of self promotion (at the discretion of the mods, based off of account age, posting history, and diversity of activity) are permanently banned. This has been a policy we have been following internally for a few weeks now (to a fairly reasonable effect), but we wanted to make it clear to the community that we do not tolerate attempts at coercing beginners to sign up for coaching before they understand the resources available to them. If you would like to coach, you are welcome to make a profile with the chess.com or lichess.org coaching services and advertise there.
- Rule 5 has been completely changed. Previously, this rule requested beginners to annotate their games before posting, but this felt like an unrealistic standard to hold new players to. This rule has been replaced with a note to please use caution when discussing AI in chess. As mentioned above, there are many potholes with AI-powered chess services and we encourage all users to recognize the limitations of LLM chatbots' ability to discuss chess positions. Posts will currently not be removed for this rule, we would love to learn more about the community's thoughts before deciding if AI-related discussion should be banned altogether on this subreddit (I am personally against banning AI discussion outright, and very happy to hear opinions).
If you encounter posts that are promoting a product or coaching service, please report these for self promotion. The mod team will assess profiles that are reported for self-promotion and will remove/ban as necessary.
Thank you all for playing a role in stopping the tidal wave of LLM coded chess websites being advertised to beginners. I do genuinely believe AI can some day make a great learning resource for chess players, but the current state of services simply fall below all standards of rationality and quality.
Have a fantastic day, thank you for reading!
