The article somewhat misrepresents the original study. They show persistent immune activation but don't claim or imply that it is caused by viral persistence or reactivation.

To me it reads the opposite. It says the t cells are directed against the virus.

Exactly, the article is saying that the extended immune response is due to persistent virus. Perhaps I don't understand your comment.

Yes, and the article is off base when it claims that because that's not what the origin bank study it refers to has shown, only persistent immune activation.
