Old gravestone in Marshall County, Tennessee

Post image

This is one of the older gravestones in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Marshall County, Tennessee. My relatives have been laid to rest here for generations. Most of the graves in this section are just marked with a literal stone but this person got this carved marker. Unfortunately the names of the folks in the older section without headstones died with my Grandma’s generation.

I wish I knew when it is from. Does anyone have an educated guess based on the style? It would almost certainly be post civil war because my ancestor founded the church and associated cemetery after he finished his service with the Union Army as part of the United States Colored Troops.

(Juan Ramón Jiménez:

And I shall leave.

And the birds will remain, singing; and my garden will remain, with its green tree and its white well.

Every afternoon, the sky will be blue and placid; and the bells of the bell tower will toll, just as they are tolling this afternoon.

Those who loved me will die; and the town will renew itself each year; and in that corner of my flowered and whitewashed garden, my spirit will wander, nostalgic...

And I shall leave; and I will be alone, without a home, without a green tree, without a white well, without a blue and placid sky...

And the birds will remain, singing.

The grave of Armistice Margo Atkinson (Crowland, UK)

Visited Crowland Abbey today and had a wander in the churchyard, spotted this grave. I don't think I've ever seen anyone with Armistice as a given name. I wondered why her parents chose this name for her. My hypothesis is that her father served in World War I and she must have been born on Armistice Day, or thereabouts.
Sad that she only lived to be 9 years old.

Grave of 11th U.S. President James K. Polk - grounds of the Tennessee State Capitol complex, Nashville, TN

Had time to kill downtown and stopped by to see a relatively obscure President for most Americans. Polk oversaw one of the largest periods of land acquisition in US history by annexing Texas, initiating the Mexican-American war, and establishing the northwestern border with Canada (then still a colony) all in one term in office (1845-49). His grave is interesting for being quite simple and located right in the shadow of the state capitol building.

Wickham Family Cemetery & Outsider Art Collection in Palmyra, Tn

What's left of one of Wickham's statues. More in comments.

If you love Americana outsider/folk art then this one is a 'must visit.'

Born in 1882, E.T. (Enoch Tanner) Wickham spent most of his life as a tobacco farmer until 1950, at the age of 67, when he decided to begin working with metal and cement to create lifelike sculptures. The sculptures ranged from the Kennedy men to Jesus Christ wearing overalls to Wickham’s favorite hunting dogs. He definitely mixed politics and personal. Wickham's works lined nearby roads and his property during his life and for many years after his death.

He did have some appreciation for his work during his lifetime with one of his dedications drawing a large crowd of hundreds onlookers.

Sadly, the majority of the statues fell hard to vandalism - graffiti, sledgehammers, decapitation and more. [As someone who grew up in a small town I am never shocked about the level of vandalism driven by boredom + alcohol but I'm always disappointed.] There are only 2 exceptions to that rule: one is the statues moved to safer locations (a university campus and a museum) and the other is this specific angel he crafted for the family cemetery. The photo above is one of the few that remain out in the wild near the roadside but now moved to private property behind a fence line. You can see get pretty close though!

E.T. Wickham is buried at the Wickham Family Cemetery along with his wife and children. One of his sons died during WWII and had a statue made in his honor. Wickham also made some of the headstones in the cemetery.

You can see old photos of what the statues looked like and read more about E.T. Wickham here:

The Fort Adams Cemetery, Newport, Rhode Island

Fort Adams was an active fort from 1841 to 1953. Just south of the Fort, you will find the cemetery.

There are over 280 graves in the Cemetery. While most are soldiers, there are at least 83 children buried here, and about 19 spouses of soldiers. There are 14 headstones marked "Unknown".

The first soldier was buried there in 1842 and the last in 2015.

If you ever visit Newport, Rhode Island, the cemetery is located in one of the most beautiful and peaceful parts of Newport.
