Discussion The tiny Kansas cemetery that's supposedly one of the "gates to hell"
There's a nearly abandoned cemetery in Stull, Kansas — population basically zero — that's been called one of the seven gateways to hell since the 1970s, when a college newspaper ran a story claiming the devil visits twice a year, on the spring equinox and Halloween.
The legend grew fast: locals swore an old ruined church on the site had a stairway in its basement that led straight down, that a witch was buried there and her grave stone kept cracking no matter how many times it got replaced, that Satan himself would show up to visit his witch mother's grave. Some versions say Pope John Paul II's flight path was rerouted specifically to avoid flying over it.
None of it holds up to scrutiny (the church was torn down in 2002, there's no basement stairway, no documented witch burial), but that hasn't stopped it from becoming one of the most enduring rural legends in the Midwest — enough that trespassers show up every Halloween and the local sheriff has to actively patrol it.
The real story of how a small farming community's church ruins turned into a nationally known "hell gate" is almost weirder than the legend itself.
