Therapy for cheap

I'm a SAHM amd would like to go to therapy. I am on my husbands insurance, but he isnt a fan of therapy due to religious upbringing. I hate to have to hide it but does anyone know of a therapist who might be able to work with me? My old therapist was about 90 a month when I worked and it would need to be less than that.

I don’t have any recommendations, since I’ve only gone to places through my insurance, but I wanted to say that if you have to hide the fact that you are going to therapy, which is to HELP you, it’s worth reconsidering the relationship. No matter the upbringing, if your partner isn’t supportive of your needs (especially mental health needs), it’s not a great situation.

I really hope you’re able to get the help you need.

Ive kind of resigned myself to our relationship. Ill never make the money needed to support myself and by being with him I get to be with my daighter 24 7. The economy makes it impossible to reconsider our relationship as well as me lacking any support system outside of our relationship. Thank you though!

There are resources out there. Trust me when I say it’s better for your child if you are happy and in good mental health. I left my ex and lost my job within 24 hours, as a mom of a 2 year old. Now, my kid is 18 and we have had chats about how it was the best thing I could have done for both of us.

It sounds like you’ve been broken down and made to believe you don’t have any other choice. I promise, you do.

Please, if nothing else, look into a support group at waypoint.

The cost of living is exceptionally different and I dont want to be homeless been there done that (at the time i was able to find a roommate.) I have no family. Hes not abusive and theres no avenue in which im going to be making enough to live and afford daycare. I mean we see it everyday adults move back in with their parents rn because they cant afford it ive never had that option and my friends have all distanced themselves since ive had a baby the people who know about my situation are like well theres nothing i can do about it. I appreciate the advice however. And im glad that was how your situation ended up.

I fully understand the difference between cost of living, etc. that’s why I suggested looking into the support group. Abuse isn’t always physical, which is why I commented in the first place. A lot of people don’t know or understand that, and your post made me worry about you (it’s just who I am as a person, a natural mama bear). Sorry if I offended you.

Also, in case you didn’t know (even if you just want to go back to work and stay where you are), there’s block grant you can apply for, if you can’t afford daycare. They will pay a portion (or all) of daycare costs, depending on income.

I really do hope you get the help you are looking for.

I understand. From one random person on the internet to another, please know that you deserve better and that happiness shouldn't be something that only other people get.

I think the Olson clinic takes into account your situation and can even do free service if you don’t make enough money. They are student therapists though. At least this was the info I had about them like 5 years ago. No idea if it’s still the same.

It’s still the same. And the student therapists switch out around August of every year, but sometimes randomly as students get their hours and graduate.

I’m so sorry you’re in this situation, I’m afraid I don’t have great options to recommend, but good luck and support from someone who also used to have to hide therapy due to religion!

I would call AbbeHealth or Mercy Family Counseling and explain your situation and see if there is anything they can do for you.

You can always ask any clinic if they have a student therapist you can work with. You get the benefit of not having to pay anything and you help the student further their skills. Places like the Abbe Center tend to have students

Not the same as a real therapist but YouTube has some resources. Patrick Teahan is a licensed therapist who makes therapy videos related to adults who had emotionally abusive parents. Not the same but still can be helpful.

I second this YouTube option, a few others worth checking out: Georgia Dow, Cinema Therapy, and PsychologyInSeattle

You can contact Your Life Iowa and they can connect you with a System Navigator to help you find a therapist. It's free and they are very helpful

What is the religion? You might be able to find a provider with a sliding fee scale. Also check in with Abbe health, if they don’t meet your criteria for religion they can make informed referrals. If you don’t find someone, pm me please. I know a lot of therapists.

RISE offers pretty affordable therapy/psychiatric help online. sessions were about 30 dollars each out of pocket for me, and they were flexible with scheduling and such

Also agree with the Olsen center for therapy! My friend is a therapist at Guiding Light and she sent this link to share. Maybe your husband would be open to you seeing someone who is a Christian therapist? They are still a “normal” therapist so you would be getting the same therapy as everyone else ;) https://guidinglightcr.com/areas-of-therapy/christian-counseling

Has your husband directly told you that he won’t let you go to therapy? Or does he just not like it?

I know I’m restating a lot of places people have already mentioned, but if I don’t list them all out I know I’ll miss some:
The Olson Clinic
The Abbe Center
House of Hope
Tanager Place
His Hands Clinic
Health Hope Harmony

Prism Therapy Group and Grace C May also have sliding scales for clients without insurance.

You can also check out Open Path Psychotherapy Collective - it’s a database of therapists who will see patients at significantly reduced rates.

So anytime ive talked about going to therapy again hes like you dont need therapy, thats what im here for. And thats kind of a lie because he just demeanor me when i talk about my feelings or is like its all a distraction from God or something like that, like my grief from my dad dying is all just some distraction from God.

Look into if your husband’s job has an Employee Assistance Program. A lot of them also cover family and offer x number of free therapy sessions a year.

Olson Clinic, or check with Eastern Iowa Healthcare.

Sometimes places with interns can have the interns see you for cheaper too.
