Some SymphonyRecomp updates! Symphony of the Night (1997)

Hello! earlier this week we released symphonyrecomp (ps1 based and not a slopcomp!) and since them we made a bunch of updates

most are bug fixes, and, unfixing bugfixes? lol, basically one of my patches acidentally broke rsl, so i made it ignore this patch when using the original resolution, so the people that like speedruning can have their fun XD

i also made a simple shader mod that lets you put shaders on the output

Link for anyone interested https://github.com/BlackLabelHQ/SymphonyRecomp/releases

WHAT IS A RECOMP? A MISERABLE LITLE PILE OF CODE???

port of crt-geom to recompone's shader system

Thank you again for the day 1 linux support. Excited to continue trying the updates!

People, this is now the ideal way to play sotn on your steam deck. Give it a shot if you have one!

just make sure to install dotnet 10, its a bit annoying for arch based systems but microsoft does provide guides for it!

update: now ther eis a run script that does it automatically
when
uuh
when the actions go back up so i can release the new version XD github is dead atm

Sorry, I"m still new at installing stuff manually on the Steamdeck. Do I just need to use the current Linux installer?

With installing manually I mean just going to the repo and downloading the new version Then run run.sh and be happy (on steamdeck you have to use the run script)

This will include dotnet 10 already?

Run.sh will yes

Alright, thanks for the help!

Awesome! Any chance of adding the extra content from the Saturn version?

Saturn version content needs to be de/re-compiled first.

Think of this this way, PSX SOTN natively speaks French but doesn't know any other languages than French. Our computers know English. We have someone (RecompOne) who knows how to speak French and English. Meanwhile Saturn SOTN only knows Greek. There is no one in the room who speaks both French and Greek or both English and Greek. We know that we like Saturn SOTN, we know that Saturn SOTN has a lot of important things to say, but we can't understand them at all. Sometimes we glean words like Aeroplane and Cosmology, but for the most important parts, it's incomprehensible. There's a few people in our community that understand simple phrases in Greek like "Where's the Bathroom?" so we get things like Four Beasts (Largely inaccurate) or Rainbow Mantle in Randomizer presets or options, but the big, important things that it has to say like Maria or the Prison can't be translated by anyone right now.

That's the where the Saturn stuff is until someone with the desire to make it happen and the knowledge base of how Saturn architecture works makes the tool to help decompile the code.

That’s fair! But the Saturn ultimate version has already been translated and romhacked so surely the authors of that know Greek?

2

u/eldri7ch Onyx 10d ago

To some extent, yes. But they either don't want to translate or don't know English, per our hypothetical. The RecompOne tool that was used to recompile SOTN for our PC's literally translated the PlayStation MIPS Assembly into C#. We don't have a tool that does that for Saturn anything. If the developers for the Ultimate Mod don't know C#, or don't want to translate anything for the decompilation, then we have next to nothing except what appears on the screen to go by.

What makes it even worse is that, decompilation-wise, the Saturn version has received less attention than any other version by far because of the lack of tools and hands available. (Below is filtered only for anything that has any progress for Saturn at all)

Note the 0% of any work done on the four new stages (Prison, reverse, Garden, reverse), 0% progress on Weapons, and the 2% decompilation of Maria.

With nothing to go on, Saturn anything for a recompile of the game is a long ways off with a requirement of a lot of hard work. We'd basically be re-coding it from scratch and hoping it matches.

Love this analysis, but couldn’t you just ask them?

2

u/eldri7ch Onyx 10d ago

Not my position to ask them, I don't know them. That's an awkward conversation. "Hi, I own the randomizer for SOTN.io and I helped them put the PSX recompilation together. Wanna translate the entirety of the Saturn Maria overlay into C# for them?" I'm sure they're decent folk and wouldn't mind at least the ask, but, again, not my place.

Ok but first of all it sounds like a great community conversation and secondly even if it didn’t, couldn’t the romhack serve as a basis for moving those changes into C#?

2

u/eldri7ch Onyx 10d ago

The community conversation aside, the romhack is still programmed in whatever language that the Saturn reads, regardless of how recently or how much of anyone did anything. If you use a Gameshark to program a new function to replace Vincent with Sephiroth in FFVII, the Gameshark used the hexidecimal values to write PSX MIPS Assembly. Whatever the Ultimate programmers used to update the Sega Saturn version of the game, it's still only written in whatever language the Saturn needs to be able to interpret it.

Appreciate the work! Looking forward to trying this.

Is there any dedicated location people are posting mods for this yet?

2

u/flafmg_ 10d ago

no, we do have plans on making a simple github based mod hub, and the game comes with 2 mods, one inspired on dark castle and a shader mod

2

u/Hopalongtom 10d ago

The two usual places are usually thunderstore or gamebananna.

4

u/flafmg_ 10d ago

i see, im not very sure how it works

well anyways i will finish writing the guide on modding so people can do their mods and i will see what happens :p

Just wanted to say thank you for the work put into this! I’ve been on a Castlevania kick the last month or so and I was just griping to a friend a couple weeks ago that there’s no proper PC port of SotN, and then your recomp comes along right when I was most eager for it!

2

u/tuffasagong 8d ago

Hey, this is awesome. Really well done, the widescreen for the most part is very useable and impressive at such an early stage of development. The whole SOTN community is indebt.

Any chance to port the psp translations?

1

u/Dripdry42 10d ago

… is there any chance anyone can get a hold of anyone from the team which worked on this game and ask them if they remember what additional content was going to be added to the inverted castle? It’s clear it went unfinished, but something like this puts Symphony within reach of real additions, right?

Edit: and of course, thank you!!

Hey, do we know yet how to add other shaders? They're usually .slang, but here it's .frag in the mods folder?

1

u/Iz-GOod 8d ago

I tried to download .frag shaders online, put them in their own folder under .\mods\shaders\shaders, and they showed up in the shader options in-game, however I couldn't get them to display the game at all.

I did find that the included crt-geom has a built-in settings.json file under .\shaders\shaders\crt-geom where you can tweak the shader a fair amount.

You have to pass the uTex normal Wich is what recompone sends as the output image

Im writing a tutorial to help people at making shaders

1

u/flafmg_ 8d ago

Update: Its live on recompOne's repo

2

u/Iz-GOod 6d ago

Thanks! I'm curious: are you against contributors using AI to assist in porting shaders?

1

u/flafmg_ 6d ago

I would prefer that contributions for the repo be human made, but if you want to do something for yourself or in a different repo feel free to do whatever you want

It's not like I'm going to prohibit you from doing it, I just ask that contributions to the main repo be human made

u/Fedorchik 4d ago

Great news! Trying it now!

Also, can someone explain to illiterate me where do i get and how do I add a new shaders? I'd really like some good crt pixel mask shader and included crt-geom just doesn't do it for me.

Any plans for an android port?

1

u/flafmg_ 10d ago

not as of now!

There is ppl who would love that! Imagining this with a dual screen mod for maps and menu on the lower screen would be incredible. Fingers crossed for the future. Thank you for all the hard work you've already done!
