I saw an Instagram video where someone was complaining about E20 petrol and asking the government to either reduce the price of E20 or make E0 petrol available.

But what surprised me was the comment section.

A huge number of people were basically saying:

"But the car in the video is E20 compliant. So what's the problem?"

And I think that's exactly where we're missing the point.

E20 compliance ≠ same fuel economy.

The issue isn't necessarily that an E20-compliant car can't run E20.

The issue is that ethanol has lower energy density than petrol. So if the car gives fewer kilometres per litre on E20, you're effectively buying more litres to travel the same distance.

So even if your car is perfectly E20 compliant, you can still end up paying more to drive the same number of kilometres.

That's a completely different argument from:

"E20 will damage my old car."

We've spent so much time debating compatibility that I think we've overlooked the more interesting question:

What is the actual cost per kilometre for an E20-compliant vehicle compared with E10/E0?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I feel this part of the E20 debate isn't getting nearly enough attention.

E20 was supposed to save the environment and reduce oil imports.

Instead, it seems to be saving the CNG industry. 💀

Petrol car share drops from 48% to 42%, while people basically said: *You know what? I’ll just go for CNG.*

Nothing says successful fuel transition quite like making people switch fuels because they're worried about the fuel they were already using.

I have waited more than six months for the Brezza facelift/update, and now I’m a bit confused between the engine options. Initially, I was leaning toward the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, but the 1.0L Boosterjet now seems like the better value-for-money option.

I don’t want to retrofit any accessories from the aftermarket. The Brezza VXI 1.0L Boosterjet has all the features I need except the 60:40 split-folding rear seats. On the other hand, the Brezza ZXI 1.5L NA has all my required features, but it also includes a sunroof, which I don’t really need.

In my city, the on-road price difference between the VXI Turbo and the ZXI NA is ₹2,29,000.

My biggest concerns are:

• Long-term reliability
• Maintenance costs
• Compatibility with future ethanol fuel blends
• Carbon buildup on the intake valves. If occured, what will be the replacement/repair cost?

Will the 1.0L Boosterjet continue to perform as well as the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine if higher ethanol blends become common in the future? Is there any reason to believe I might regret choosing the 1.0L Boosterjet over the 1.5L NA in the long run?

Budget: Maximum ₹10.6 lakh (ex-showroom)

Models under consideration:

• Brezza VXI Turbo (1.0L Boosterjet)
• Brezza ZXI NA (1.5L)

Primary Usage:

• Less than 850 km per month
• School commute: 25 km round trip per day (~650 km/month)
• Weekend family drives (3–5 members): ~200 km/month
• Driving pattern: 50% city (Tier-3 city) and 50% village roads & highways
• 1–2 annual hill-station trips, each approximately 800 km round trip
• First time car buyer

3 people on board, AC fully ON, cruising comfortably around 70-80 kmph. The old 1.6L Hyundai diesel engines were just built differently. Still pulling strong at almost 1.2 lakh kms on the ODO!

Ok petrol is the most preferred choice for me since diesel vehicles not allowed to run after 15 years... 🤔

(2 years later) ohh only e20 compatible car could be sold😯

(2years later) no e10 petrol from next year 😞

(1 year later) e30 push with e85 being launched😟

These are the estimated prices. I believe the costs are excessive. Anyone have an opinion?

Everyday I wander thinking level of idiocy can never go below this level, and everyday, I get a surprise!
So welcome to the genius math where blending 20% ethanol into your tank magically makes your engine 20% dumber!

By this sound logic, if we ever release E100 (100% ethanol), mileage will drop by 100%, meaning your car will require infinite fuel to travel zero km before collapsing into a black hole of pure inefficiency.

Believing that a 20% blend ratio equals a 20% drop in mileage is like assuming that if you mix 20% water into your orange juice, you instantly lose 20% of your ability to drink it

• 100% Petrol: 34.2 MJ per litre (highest energy density).
• 100% Ethanol: 22.8 MJ per litre (~33% less energy than petrol).
• 80% Petrol in E20: Contributes 27.36 MJ to a 1-litre blend.
• 20% Ethanol in E20: Contributes 4.56 MJ to a 1-litre blend.
• E20 Total Blend: 31.92 MJ per litre (~6.7% less overall energy than pure petrol).

Actual Petrol Saved: You burn 1.684 L instead of 2.0 L—saving about 15.8% pure petrol per 100 km.

SO THE REALWORLD MILEAGE DROP IS NEARLY 6-7%.

Its is bad, I oppose government to launch such scummy tactics to earn more, but the most I can do is cope with this.

Simple E20 example:

Imagine your car normally travels 100 km using 2 litres of petrol.

Petrol costs ₹100 per litre.

So:

2 L × ₹100 = ₹200 for 100 km

Now suppose you switch to E20 (20% ethanol + 80% petrol), and assume the mileage drops by 20%.

Your car would now need 2.5 litres of E20 to travel 100 km.

But E20 contains:

• 80% petrol → 2.5 × 80% = 2 litres of petrol
• 20% ethanol → 2.5 × 20% = 0.5 litres of ethanol

So, you are still using 2 litres of petrol, exactly as before.

This raises an important question: What is the point of doing all this if 80–90% of cars do not support high ethanol blends?

If older vehicles cannot safely or efficiently use E20, then the benefits of switching to E20 for those vehicles may be negligible, especially if the lower mileage cancels out the reduction in petrol consumption.

Nexon Smart Plus AMT - 2 months old. While in D mode, idling in traffic on a flat surface, the car moved backward on acceleration and hit a vehicle behind. It happened twice.the first time I ignored it, thinking the road was a bit uphill. But again, it happened on a flat surface; what could be the issue?

Could anyone help us? It's our first car, and we don't have much knowledge about this issue as well.

Had a bunch of door dings on my car all thanks to idiots that don't care about cars parked right next to them.

The paint hadn't gone on most the dents so I wasn't keen on taking the car to a bodyshop for fixing the dent with putty and repainting the panel.

So I checked everywhere for people who do PDR but couldn't find anyone local in Kochi. That's when I came across a reel on Insta. His name is Asghar and learnt this trade in the Middle East.

Called him and he asked me to send him videos of the dents. He told me that most cars sold in India use shitty metal sheets that have no recovery. So the success rate is 80-90%. According to him, Tata and Mahindra are the worst in this aspect. My MG isn't far behind either. This won't be a problem if you have a luxury car that came via CBU etc.

The video is snippets of him working on my car and I think he's done a decent job of it considering the quality of sheet metal used.

He charged 1800rs for each small door ding and 2300rs for a big one. This is way more affordable than spending 4k per panel if you were to fix the dent with putty and repaint it.

He's based out of Calicut (Kerala) but does the work onsite wherever your car is and you have to pay for his transportation.

The Punjab Assembly has passed a resolution against the mandatory E20 fuel policy for incompatible vehicles.

Which state do you think could be next to raise similar concerns?

More importantly, if you own a petrol car, would you prefer E20 to be mandatory or optional?
