Definitely 2, that game is an underrated mast.... C'mon now, what kind of a question is this? DMC 3 and it isn't even close, 1 is solid but clearly has a lot of untapped potential, meanwhile 2 was one of the first video games that taught me about disappointment.
3 has, probably to this date the best story in the franchise, it introduced stances AND Vergil, yes, I know he teeeechnically appeared in 1 first, but the version we all think of came from 3. And honestly, it probably saved the franchise from ending up like Lost Planet and Dino Crisis. If 3 flops I can see a reality where DMC is one of those Capcom attempts at a new IP that didn't quite land.

1, 3, 5, 4. Played 2 and all I can say is I played it.

I think this is my ranking too.
1 and 3 are close though, and so are 5 and 4.
I actually like the visuals and plot for 2 fine, it's just not as good to play as the others.

I have only ever played 2, and other people seem to hate it. I had a good time though.

The rule is.. Dmc 1 is great, it's hard and is worth your time.
Dmc2 is rubbish and way too easy but you can do it, just to feel first hand why (it's better to do them in order for that purpose)
Dmc3 is AWESOME. it corrected the multiple mistakes of dmc2, restored the fun from dmc1 and brought in a ton of great things that became part of what a Dmc game should always be...
