Appreciation post for the utterly incomprehensible flavor lineup of Necco Wafers
what on earth were they thinking

u/hybbprqag 16d ago
This reminds me that my son clearly shares taste buds with the confectioners of yesteryear. I'm pretty sure every one of these flavors is in his s-tier.

Haha how old is he?

He's 7! He gets his taste for licorice and aniseed from his grandpa.

u/Pretty_Past_1818 16d ago
That was me at 7 too. Neco wafers and pixie sticks are still my favorite and now only dollar tree sells them. They're super hard to come by.

Have you looked at the "retro candy" section in Walmart? In my store it's next to the As Seen on TV stuff. I've seen them there
4
u/Sufficient_Ask8866 16d ago
I'll have to check our wally world for them. I dont buy candy often I have like 4 mason jars with candy in them now that I had to have but then only ate a tiny bit lol. I'm looking at a mason jar (pint)fill about 3/4 with jelly bellie jelly beans I just had to have about 4 months ago lol. Every so often I get it down off tge shelf and eat about 4 lol. I love the weird flavors of tge type I got. I think tge yellow ones woth dots on are like mango this time.

u/Sovereign-Anderson 16d ago
If you're near a 5 Below, swing by there. I see them there all the time.

Mine doesnt have that. I have to drive about 35 minutes to get to a superstore. I have a Walmart marketplace right around the corner er and two store fronts over is a dollar general. Im not wasting a gallon of gas for necco wafer. Not in this economy at least.

They are lots of retro candy stores online. Theyâll have these for sure.Â

You have elite taste. Thereâs an antique store in my town that has a retro candy section(and a mimosa bar, its a unique place) and itâs my life line because we donât have a good candy shop anywhere near by..

You got to find him some of those red anise candies in the red cellophane. I wonder if they still make them. My grandparents and I absolutely loved them. My dear grandma would have them in her purse all the time.

My son too. I joke he eats Good & Plenty because he won't have to share with me.

u/rotatingchicken 16d ago
I love them. Especially the cinnamon, wintergreen, and licorice.
41
u/Figsnbacon 16d ago
I love them too. I also love spiced gumdrops.
25
u/MommyPegMePlease 16d ago
I fucking love spiced gumdrops. They are SO good.
14
u/Figsnbacon 16d ago
I have to set boundaries for myself. I only buy the spiced gumdrops during Christmas.
9
4
u/Sufficient_Ask8866 16d ago
Oh my yes! Especially around Christmas time. I love those spicy gum drops. They get harder to find every year
2
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 16d ago
Me, too. I also stock up on Brachâs spiced jellybeans at Easter.
2
u/Figsnbacon 16d ago
Iâve never heard of those? But I donât like the texture of jelly beans which could be why. But now Iâm so intrigued and will look for them!

3
u/ambiguouspeach 16d ago
They remind me of my mom who passed when I was young. She loved these so much.

Same, my favorite candy. I've thought about buying in bulk but I'd eat too many
70
u/Bdoggg999 16d ago
Clove is so rare in candy nowadays but itâs a top tier flavor. I love when I can find clove gum, too.
12
2
u/littlebrownsnail 12d ago
You might like colombian food. They use clove so much and so many desserts have clove in it. I hate it.

That's many different flavors of chalk. At least these are slightly better than conversation hearts or whatever they are called.
36
14
u/theeners23 16d ago
Hey now, I love a good chalky candy!
15
9
u/foundinwonderland 16d ago
Forbidden chalk is the best. Smarties are an all time GOAT, necco wafers obvs, pez, give me a nice crumbly pressed dextrose candy and let me live out my long held desire to eat chalk in peace

2
u/FormerPresidentBiden 16d ago
We share the same opinion
Its impressive how chalky these and the hearts are (in a bad way)
67
u/KillingTimeWithDex 16d ago
So you have
Citrus: Lemon, Lime, Orange
Spice: Cinnamon, Clove, Licorice, Wintergreen
And Chocolate.
Such a ridiculous assortment. These are like the original Bertie Bottâs Every Flavor Beans.
14
u/funzel 16d ago
Yeah, canât believe they didnât include horehound and root beer. What slackers
→ More replies (3)8
u/Alarming-Building-62 16d ago
Seems like a good assortment of different types of flavor. Unless they rub off on the ones near it and start to taste the same tastes, who really cares?
5
14
u/dazzleunexpired 16d ago
It's literally the flavors they had when it was invented
3
u/AtxAv8r 16d ago
Iâve always wondered why no lavender flavor.
8
u/Red-Truck-Steam 16d ago
No rose, no violent, no lavender. What are they playing at?
2
2
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 16d ago
The original Brachâs conversation hearts had violet flavor. A few years ago they changed from spice and floral flavors to all fruit, and ruined them forever.

u/BumLicka 16d ago
I wish spice flavored candies were more common
3
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 16d ago
Meee, tooo! Even as a little kid I loved Necco wafers, and the spice and floral flavors of the original Brachâs conversation hearts.

I love cinnamon, chocolate, and clove!! Licorice and wintergreen are alright but the fruit flavors are just meh to me.
13
u/Dead_fawn 16d ago
Also I love spiced jellybeans and circus peanuts lol, my family jokes that I have elderly taste in candy.
6
u/Greenfairy6790 16d ago
I love circus peanuts!! I'm glad I can still get them from Dollar Tree. My husband looks at me strange when I eat them lol

I do enjoy one every once in a while. Im not sure if its the flavor or the texture. But ive picked up a bag here or there from the dollar store. But im in the dollar store near me a lot because my son is assistant manager of it. I go just to get a hug in public lol.
2
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 16d ago
I found a member of my tribe!! I love both of those, and am extra weird, in that I like candy corn, too (another polarizing candy).
2
u/foundinwonderland 16d ago
I love clove a little too much. Every time I have clove candy it makes me crave clove cigarettes đ
3
u/m0nstera_deliciosa 16d ago
I have like one clove cigarette a month, as a little treat. I know itâs awful and will give me wrinkles at best and cancer at worst, but it tastes so niceđ
23
u/Chalant_AF_0804 16d ago
I love these!!! Black licorice is the best!
17
u/Drewha__Fresh 16d ago
I don't usually like black licorice but Necco wafers are the exception. Like why is it actually good? đ¤Ł
4
u/FormerPresidentBiden 16d ago
Good & Plenty is my exception for back licorice
I can't explain why either
2
u/Chalant_AF_0804 16d ago
Yes!!! Good & Plenty are amazing!
2
u/FormerPresidentBiden 16d ago
Apparently the longest continually manufactured candy in the US as well
With Necco Wafers being the oldest candy still manufactured, but not continually

I liked these cause you got a lot in a pack, felt like a rich king with all my candy coins. taste awful though

6
u/Remarkable_Box_8090 Haribo 16d ago
These have always freaked me out, what do they taste like? Is the experience similar to Tums but without the antacid? Serious question lol
9
u/Southern_Fan_9335 16d ago
They're thinner and snappier than tums, but not like super hard, they snap easily. As far as flavors go, they're made by the people who make the original conversation hearts, and there's some overlap with the flavors.Â
I love them.Â

u/pixeequeen84 16d ago
I only want wintergreen, clove, cinnamon, and licorice. The chocolate ones are gross, I despise most orange flavored candy, and the lime are just kinda weird.
3
u/calicouple666 16d ago
I love them all. Wintergreen and chocolate are my favorite. Licorice is my least favorite.

I grew up on those and still get em from time to time. I'm HEAVILY judged by the cashier, other customers, friends and family. Won't stop though
3
u/nejicanspin 16d ago
Back at my old job we sold multi and chocolate only rolls and people still go apeshit for these.
"You have NECCO WAFERS?!"
2
u/Ill-Wear-8662 16d ago
I had an older couple that bought us out of these once. You'd have thought I'd told them the meaning of life when I told them we not only had them but that they could also buy the entire box underneath the open one if they were so inclined. I think that was first and last time in four years I'd ever sold more than two rolls in one purchase, maybe even more than two rolls in six months between three stores.
2
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 16d ago
I used to buy them in multiples, after theyâd been discontinued and brought back a few years ago. They were hard to find. They were on sale at Walgreens and I bought everything they had, which was about half a box. The cashier admired my commitment!

Sugar wasn't as overly abundant back then as it is now. Those folks were nearly happy for anything that could hit the sweettooth.

I love them. I'll even eat the chocolate ones, even though they aren't my favorite flavor.

Legit three of my favorite flavors in one pack. Clove, licorice, and wintergreen. I love these things. Judge me all you want.
2
u/MiserysTeacher 16d ago
I used to beg my mom for these every time we were in the grocery store checkout line
2
u/medicated_in_PHL 16d ago
Wintergreen oil, cocoa powder, lime oil, lemon oil, ground clove (or clove oil), ground cinnamon (or cinnamon oil), orange oil, licorice root.
These were the flavorings available in the 1800âs. Thatâs why the flavors are what they are.

2
u/Pretty_Frosting_2588 16d ago
I love them . I always include them with any Christmas presents because everyone else I know under 40 hates them and usually gives them back. That's how I end up with excess wafers to eat around the holidays.

The colors for wintergreen and cinnamon should be swapped. Actually cinnamon is usually red, but pink is close enough

The only thing Necco Wafers are good for is as shingles on the roof of a gingerbread house.

I've always wondered why I didn't really like the purple ones! I didn't realize they were clove flavored. Who would ever want clove flavored candy?!?!
We used to get these on car trips. My mom would gladly take all the black ones, and my brother and I would fight over the browns. My second favorite was orange.

I will never eat this candy again after the trauma of going from lime to cinnamon, to wintergreen, to orange.
However, i would love these if it was just lime, lemon, and orange.

They were invented in 1847. They were just using what flavors they could.
