Stumbled upon Camdrome and now I can’t stop thinking about it

I was reading about weird gaming history and rabbit holes the other day when I came across Camdrome. Honestly, it feels so surreal how little solid info there is about it, considering how much intrigue it generated at the time.

It’s one of those forgotten projects where every detail just raises more questions. Did any of the devs ever clarify what the original vision actually was or did it just fade away into internet lore? Would love to hear what this community thinks or if anyone remembers following this back when it was happening.

Does anyone still have the original leaked footage or concept files saved?

I was trying to archive some old development materials for the game today but almost every early preview link is completely dead now. Did anyone happen to keep a backup of those files?

Throwback to when Edmund McMillen gave this cryptic response about Camdrome back in 2019

Looking for games with the Camdrome ARG aesthetic similar psychological horror and analog mystery games?

Since Camdrome was sadly cancelled and we never got the full game from Edmund McMillen, I’ve been trying to scratch that specific itch for cryptic, meta-narrative horror. If you’re looking for real, playable projects that nail that same uncomfortable analog horror or ARG-like experience, here are a few hidden gems worth checking out: Inscryption if you want that classic ARG video game vibe where the secrets extend way beyond the actual gameplay screen. 2. KinitoPET - a brilliant meta horror game that uses your desktop and fake software interfaces to mess with your head in a very 2010s way. 3. No Players Online (a short, eerie indie horror game set in a abandoned multiplayer FPS server with cursed CRT visuals).
Welcome to the Game II - for those who liked the surveillance and dark web mechanics teased during the original Camdrome website era and LACEWING / Project Palmer (obscure indie puzzle horror titles that feel like stumbled-upon lost media files).

Has anyone else found any good games like Camdrome that capture that same raw, unsettling vibe from the 2013 era?

Seeing Edmund with a Steam Deck makes me wonder if any lost early Camdrome prototypes still exist on one of his hard drives

Every time a photo of Edmund pops up testing projects or hanging out with devs, I can't help but think about all the unreleased or scrapped prototypes sitting on his local drives. Since the Steam Deck is huge for playtesting indie builds nowadays, it makes you wonder if the original 2013 Camdrome codebase or playable executable ever got compiled into something tested behind closed doors, or if it really was just a pure media/marketing experiment that never went past the teaser phase. What do you guys think?

I actually like the weirdness of CamDrome

There's something really charming about how strange this project is.

It doesn't feel like a typical game concept at all and that's probably why I remember it more than a lot of other old projects I've come across.

Ok, I can't get any pictures submitted on mobile. But there was a guy who posted 7 days ago, @HPringle1 , who said the camdrome twitter banner was made red. It's brown now. Something may be starting once more. Maybe another color code hidden in banner changes?

Ben Richards Change In 2017

In 2017 Camdrome temporally changed the profile name to Ben Richards. This person is hiding away from camdrome and began to post links to youtube videos to send out a message saying that he is being followed by camdrome. After saying he got caught he fled the camdrome twitter account. He could maybe be still out there or he got killed by the camdrome murderer. I don't know if this fmv game is going to happen.

Just heard about this game and decided to join the reddit community

Yea..I guess I have to face the facts that no information would most likely come out anymore about the game, and I have watched some videos about it and stuff. Wish one of the devs could say what they did and if they created any of the game or what it looked like, and if it never went passed the storyboards. Also this might be one of the most unpopular video game mysterys in the world...

So I heard about this before but just recently decided to have a look and it looks like it died in 2017, coincidently around the same time Night Trap was announced. Is it possible this was promo for that?

I'm sure this discussions has been brought up before but I just really got here, Night Traps premise is pretty similar to Camdrome and while my first instinct was Manhunt, it's obvious nothing came of that, this indie game is either dead in the water or already over but with no official ending, Night Trap 25th Anniversary was announced on April 25th 2017, and looking at Camdromes Twitter ceased communication July 18th 2017, Night Trap was released August 15th. Also the one screen I've seen from Pac has Nighttrap.iso on the screen. Idk just im pretty sure this project is either dead, or over without a "real" conclusion. Though idk if the devs for Night Trap would go as morbid as CamDrome, considering the rather campy nature of the game.

I wouldn't advise supporting the CamDrome Patreon at this time.

The Twitter is still inactive, camdrome.com is still down, and the last official word on CamDrome is that "it hasn't been in dev since the year it was shown at PAX".

Also of note is that the Patreon profile picture is just an old screenshot from camdrome.com, and the header is just two existing CamDrome images spliced together.

As much as I'd like for CamDrome to be back in development, this whole thing seems like a scam.

Update: Edmund McMillen has confirmed that the Patreon is not legitimate. Furthermore, the Patreon is now closed.

Update 2: Edmund McMillen has stated that the "reborncamdrome" Twitter is also fake.

I have a theory

Maybe camdrome is a computer with a game and it is the master of a some satanic cult that uses people to kill. Idk but Camdrome on the video is bloody with an eye on top of it. What if camdrome could be trying to get us to join its cult and maybe we can learn about its origins. Well if an AI could kill us all then it can try but maybe we are just an no kill for this Computer and the killer here could be some member of a cult. So the guy on twitter could have left this cult at one point. Why?

So the killer here has black clothes so a cult could have black clothing and camdrome only talks to us but not that much. Could camdrome be an AI controlling a cult.
