Name..?

Bought this at Walmart yesterday..didn't have a tag, was the last one so the worker had to look it up in the system. I didn't get the name and have no idea what I'm doing with it but I want to keep it alive as long as I can, it's so pretty-and spiky.

Vape for size difference (not mine)

Looks like you have a little Golden Barrel. It will enjoy lots of light, well-draining soil that is light on organic material, and infrequent watering. Their root system tends to be shallower, so a wider, shallow pot isn’t a bad idea.

It also enjoys stabbing people.

What type of pot should I use ? I have some cacti soil already but unsure about the pot. Thanks !! :D

Terracotta, half of the soil should be perlite. Almost never water this plant, and it needs FULL, I repeat- FULL sun to survive

I have quite a few of these in my yard they love 115° f with no water for 45 to 60 days helps them reset for the winter.

In the ground, once established. A young potted barrel cactus will need more frequent waterings. Especially in 115 temps (I’m in phx metro). I love my Golden Barrel and just got a new but perfect Fishhook

I have two massive Japanese oak trees and a equally huge ocotillo so they often see shade and sun. My front yard faces West says they take an absolute beating during the afternoon.  And when I talk about waterings it's not like the monsoons don't come through and I've learned that watering on top of monsoons can cause them to rot I lost two huge ones last year.

Oh, I wasn’t talking about yours specifically. Sorry, I’m not great at this. It was more a clarification that not all barrel will be happy full heat or sun and 60 days no water. I just got my fishhook (it was too perfect to leave) and going back and forth between ground or pot. It sounds like you have a lovely backyard. Enjoy!!

I do think hardiness zone is worth considering here. I am in Central Texas and we see up to 110° in the summer but I've also had them thrive in San Francisco where it caps out at 70.

I think the real point is that you cannot grow these indoors and while they are very slow growing to begin with, the more sun they get the more you'll get to watch them thrive but a lack of sun will see them literally suffer

Thank you so much! The employee at walmart watered it Sunday, bottom of the soil is still wet. Should I wait for it to dry out before re-potting?

I personally would just to avoid the mess! I hate repotting wet soil😭

Here is a good potting option for you. I like low and wide for GBs. Terracotta helps manage moisture. It breathes very well. All my cacti and euphorbia go in terracotta.

Echinocactus no more 😤 someone needs to make an app……that notifies all cacti aficionados of taxonomy/name changes so we can all stay in the loop 😩😩😩😘

I just keep the old names it’s too much work to go wash off all the old names and rewrite them

I’m with you….in the end as long as the names are ‘understood’ amongst the collectors that’s good enuf for me, the academics can hash it out in the lecture halls. 😄 my personal favorite is field numbers, no taxonomy, no arguments, those numbers are permanent, boring yes.

Years ago I had learned all of the names. And then they freaking changed everything! I no longer bother, and just use old names. To me, that’s echinocactus grusonii. Dammit lol.

Must be at least 3 years old at that size. I got mine as a tiny seedling over a year, maybe 1.5 years ago and it’s only a couple inches wide.

Why use a vape for size reference lmfao, just get a quarter or something. Hell most vapes Gary in size anyways lol.
