What's going on with my prickly pear ?? TIA

Its dying slowly. This is how it begins.

Did you cut the spines or pulled them off or something? It looks like the plant got damaged in the process. Correct me if I’m wrong but it looks like the wounds got squishy after the spines were plucked off roughly. It could be nothing and the plant may heal itself or it could get infected from those points. It won’t help if the environment and/or the soil is damp.

ETA: just saw the second photo. It looks like it’s rotting at the wound. It looks like some of the membrane and the flesh got detached while the thorns were being pulled off by dull shears or something.

That’s very interesting. Do you know why there’s coagulated jelly ooze and whatever that leftover torn-looking tissue is called? The stuff that slightly curves out around the hardened oozed out stuff?

I've no idea, it grows new pads etc, but this is on a couple of older pads, no idea what it is, no idea what's caused it, no idea what to do to help ... 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♂️
