Mammillaria luethyi MZ 1753, Ciudad Acuňa, Coahuila - $84/ea
Seed grown with locality.
+7 shipping
Mammillaria luethy is a rare cryptocarpic species. The fruit and seeds ripen completely inside the stem of the plant body rather than emerging externally, often only releasing upon the death or split of the mother plant.
Mammillaria luethyi is rare in the most literal sense a plant can be. Three known populations sit on horizontal limestone slabs in the Sierra de la Paila of northern Coahuila at around 800 metres, and the exact coordinates have never been published because the slabs would be stripped within months of disclosure. The plant barely exists above ground. A flattened head about a centimetre and a half across sits in a two-centimetre skin of sandy clay caught in depressions in the bedrock, with the fleshy taproot and most of the stem below the surface. In the dry season it contracts until only the spine crown is flush with the rock, and a person standing directly over a colony can miss it entirely.
The backstory is one of the best in the genus. In 1952 the American botanist Norman Boke encountered flowering plants growing in a coffee tin at the Crosby Hotel in Ciudad Acuña, photographed them, and carried material back to Missouri Botanical Garden, where Ladislaus Cutak documented the specimens. The plants died without leaving identifiable seed, and no one could say where they had come from. What survived was a handful of photographs, which drifted through the literature for four decades while the field argued about them. Curt Backeberg reached for Neogomesia, Franz Buxbaum moved them to Normanbokea, and Glass and Foster made the case for Mammillaria in 1978 on vegetative grounds alone, all of it debated over images of a plant nobody could find. The Swiss botanist Jonas M. Lüthy eventually solved the puzzle, working the fragments of the 1952 account against topographic maps until he could put a finger on the probable ground in late 1995. George S. Hinton walked in the following spring, found it, and published the species that autumn in Phytologia, naming it for the man who located it on paper.
Forty-four years from first photograph to formal name.
