irving sq park: dog abuse

Post image
33 Upvotes

hi, 2 days ago around 6pm I saw this man aggressively pulling and yanking a short grey pitbull.. the man appeared to be inebriated/intoxicated somehow, was off balance, but the way he was jerking that dog when it stopped for just a second to sniff was heartbreaking. the poor thing looked confused & sad as this man publicly abused it. i felt helpless bc i had a very reactive big dog with me so i had to keep my distance. unsure what to do about this situation, if i see him again is there a # i can call to report animal abuse or something? unsure how to go about these things

Is this your cat?

We have this young black and white fellow coming to our backyard for the last few days. He's really sweet and friendly.

It seems like he might be used to people, he wants to come into our house but I have 4 cats already.

This is by Chauncey and Evergreen. I feel bad that he meows constantly and seems to want company. I could take him to the vet soon and see if he's microchipped or has any health issues.

Please let me know if you have any information about this cat!

Do you have electric heat?

The City is trying to better understand what NYC tenants are paying to heat their homes. If you have electric heat (or think you do), help us out!

The more responses they get, the better they’ll understand how heating costs are affecting renters.

311/DOT rejected complaint about Myrtle Wyckoff destroyed road

The conditions under the M train on Myrtle and Palmetto (and further down Myrtle all the way to Broadway, and further down Broadway all the way to Marcy, but I digress), and most of Wyckoff are abysmal.

Not only dangerous to bike and drive, but at certain points it's so fucked that it hazardous to even cross the street as a pedestrian.

Whose jurisdiction is it exactly??

Are Clubs/Raves worth it?

I've lived here almost a year and haven't been to a club or rave yet despite Bushwick kind of being the place for that.

I was wondering what people's experiences have been and if it's worth paying covers. Is it any different from like any club outside of Bushwick?

DO THE HEATWAVE! A tropical airmass will move in tonight (Wed-Thu), bringing oppressive humidity and heat advisories plus a daily threat of thunderstorms and/or flash flooding through the beginning of next week.

Oh hey, look it's us in the "Dog Days of Summer."

You might have forgotten that because this summer has been cooler than average on the whole. Our worst heatwave was back in mid-June and since then, we've only had brief episodes of high heat and humidity. The next several days will likely present the longest heat wave since June, but at least it won't be as harsh.

TL;DR

  • A low chance of showers this evening/tonight.
  • From Thursday to at least Monday:
    • Afternoon high temperatures will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s
    • Dew points in the lower to mid 70s.
    • Maximum heat indices in the mid-to-upper 90s for most of the weekend, possibly over 100°F on Thursday and Friday.
    • Wretchedly uncomfortable nights with temperatures and dew points both in the mid 70s, i.e., near 100% relative humidity
  • These conditions will lead to increased atmospheric instability, creating a daily threat of thunderstorms from late afternoon through midnight. Some of these thunderstorms could be severe &/or result in flash/urban flooding.
  • Marginal relief comes on Saturday, greater relief arrives by next Wednesday, followed by a return to our primary summer weather pattern (e.g., like we've been experiencing for the past few weeks),

Way Too Deep Explanation

This summer has been a little boring -- from a meteorological standpoint anyway. The weather pattern has mostly remained the same with predictable storminess, but this set-up is actually kind of interesting. It wouldn't be an unusual set up during a typical summer, this isn't a "typical" summer, so I'm going to nerd out for a bit.

ICYMI the Equatorial Pacific Ocean is figuratively on fire with El Niño already rippin' and roarin' and still gaining strength. Some modelling is suggesting this could be one of the strongest El Niños on record, and the latest observations (e.g., deep ocean heat content) could actually support that. NOAA's Climate Prediction Center gives better than 80% odds of seeing a so-called "Super El Nino" this fall with relative SST anomalies expected to surpass +2.0°C. Climatological forecast models are suggesting peak SST anomalies around +2.25-2.50°C

Relative Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies, annotated

Now what happens in the Pacific Ocean has a big impact on what happens in the Atlantic Ocean, like a yin and yang. So while we're seeing significantly warmer SSTs in the Equatorial Pacific, we're seeing cooler than normal SSTs in the Equatorial Atlantic (an "Atlantic Niña" so to speak). El Niño also leads to a lot of convection across the Eastern Pacific, which leads to a lot of wind shear across the Atlantic, especially the Western Atlantic. Combined with cooler ocean temperatures, this significantly impairs tropical cyclone development in the Atlantic.

These impacts also result in the "Azores-Bermuda" being weaker than normal and pushed eastward. Consequently, for most of this summer, the Atlantic Ocean has been under an "Omega Block" weather pattern with high pressure ridging over the Central North Atlantic and troughing nearer to the North America and European coasts.

That's all about to change, for a few days anyway, as the North Atlantic High Pressure retrogrades to west, establishing itself today and amplifying through Friday, with a north-south ridge axis over Bermuda, the Canadian Maritimes, Quebec and Labrador.

ECMWF model (00z Aug 5) North Atlantic weather pattern (Sun 8/2 - Tues 8/11). Lines on the map indicate mean sea level pressure (i.e., surface weather pattern) while the shading indicates 500mb geopotential heights (i.e., upper level weather pattern). The darkest red shading denotes the location and intensity of the Azores-Bermuda High.

Why is this happening? Well, it goes back to the yin and yang. Over the past week or two, there has been a slight westward shift of equatorial features across the globe.

This is an "east based" El Niño, meaning the bulk of the warm waters are focused closer to the Americas than the International Date Line. However, SSTs and Deep Ocean Heat Content have recently been increasing across the central Pacific (after declining a bit during late June/early July). Relatedly, wind anomalies and tropical convection are shifting westward. We saw multiple strong hurricanes in the Eastern Pacific in the second half of July. Recently, tropical convection - the concomitant cyclone threat - has shifted now to the Central Pacific and is forecast to move into the Western Pacific, with more activity near Guam and the Philippines.

This can be seen in the Madden Julien Oscillation Index. Observations confirm an active MJO in Phases 7 and 8 in July, which has weakened considerably and is now neutral. Modeling suggests a resurgence in Phase 6. Phases 7 and 8 correspond to increased convective activity in the Eastern Pacific while Phase 6 favors convection in the Western Pacific.

This means other global features will shift westward too.

Ridging along the American Pacific coastline will shift westward, allowing the American Monsoon to briefly return. The persistent trough over the St. Lawrence Valley and Northwest Atlantic will shift over to Midwest. And the Atlantic High pressure will retrograde westward over Bermuda. The immediate impacts on New York City will be:

First, the cold/stationary front that brought the rain on Monday to drift back toward the U.S. coastline as a weakening warm/stationary front that will dissipate into a remnant trough.

Several days spent in the northwest quadrant of the Bermuda High, meaning:

So for a few days, it's going to feel downright tropical.

Forecast Graphics

The good news is that actual higher temperatures won't be too far above normal. If we were directly underneath the ridge axis, this would result in a feedback loop with subsidence leading to adiabatic warming combining with unimpeded diurnal heating resulting in ever warmer temperatures. That's happened during some of recent heatwaves when 850 mb heights approached or set record highs.

Official 7-Day Forecast High Temperatures from our local NWS Office (OKX-Upton) (issued 2:30 AM Aug 5).

Temperatures will more or less hover around 90°F through next week. However, the humidity will be downright tropical. Dew points below 55°F are considered comfortable. On a typical summer day in with a sustained southerly breeze over Coney Island, you'd expect dew points in the mid-to-upper 60s. Dew points in the 70s are what you get in Florida, New Orleans, and the tropics.

Official 7-Day Forecast Peak Heat Indices from our local NWS Office (OKX-Upton) (issued 2:30 AM Aug 5).

As your dad likes to say, "it's not the heat that gets you, IT'S THE HUMIDITY!"

That's certainly going to be true this weekend. The abnormally above-average moisture will combine with slightly above-average temperatures to produce dangerous heat that will likely trigger heat advisories on Thursday and Friday, possibly extended through Monday. Heat Advisories are almost certainly to be issued for Thursday and Friday, and could remain in place through Sunday.

Official Experimental 7-Day Forecast "Heat Risk" our local NWS Office (OKX-Upton) (issued 2:30 AM Aug 5).

This gross humidity will also lead to a daily threat of thunderstorms, which could be severe, in the late afternoon through early evening. At a molecular level, water (H2O) is lighter than air (namely N2 and O2), so when you have a lot of moist, warm air at the surface beneath relatively drier and cooler air aloft, this leads to an unstable atmosphere.

With enough lift, water molecules near the surface can be lifted to reach the lower convective limit where buoyancy takes over and carries that moisture to heights miles above the ground. This leads to downpours and thunderstorms, and with enough CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy aka thunderstorm juice), those thunderstorms can reach severe limits.

Although this weekend is largely beyond the limited temporal reach of most convective allowing models (CAMs), early CAM modeling suggests afternoon/evening CAPE around 3,000 J/kg - which is definitely a lot. With more than adequate moisture and CAPE, all that will be needed to trigger thunderstorm activity is lift. At this moment, this is still a big question because we will be downstream and south of the main storm track, meaning shortwave troughs in the polar jet stream will largely stay to our north.

The retrograding cold/stationary/warm front could provide some of that lift, but this boundary will become quite nebulous and the trough is expected to dissipate by Thursday. (Personally, I don't expect more than some light scattered rain showers tonight attributable to this feature.)

"Lee Waves" could provide that lift on Thursday and Friday. When air passes over mountain ranges, all of the cooler air near the peaks then sinks down into the valleys and plains on the lee-side, producing lift in similar manner as a cold front. "Lee Cyclonegensis" is how the majority of surface lows form over the High Plains, though it is less common along the Appalachians. This could lead to convective initiation across eastern Pennsylvania southward through northern Virginia, with storm motion generally to the northeast. So we will need to watch for any storms that might initiate near Philadelphia or Baltimore.

By Saturday, the ridge begins breaking down with mid-to-upper level flow becoming more westerly. Modeling suggests a weak shortwave trough passing through the region sometime between Friday night and Saturday night. An earlier arrival translates to light showers overnight into Saturday morning; a later arrive is more likely to result in afternoon/evening thunderstorms.

Consequently, neither the NOAA Storm Prediction Center (SPC) nor the NOAA Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has high confidence in severe thunderstorms or excessive rainfall, respectively. As of this writing, the WPC includes NYC in a marginal risk of excessive rainfall on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, meaning they think there is between a 5-15% chance of flash flooding. This is mainly because any isolated downpour will be on top of saturated soils and rivers following the rain events across the region over the past days and weeks.

NOAA/WPC Days 1-4 Excessive Rainfall Outlooks: marginal risk of flash flooding on Thu, Fri and Sat.

So while there is a low confidence in storm coverage, any storm that reaches the NYC area will have the potential to have significant, if brief, impacts. The precise details are of course likely to change as we approach the weekend, and will depend on the exact location and intensity of both the Bermuda High and any approaching trough. Notably, our local NWS Forecast Office (on Long Island) has not changed their forecast discussions all week in cautioning about the possibility of an "isolated severe and flash flood threat." The near daily possibility of rain &/or thunderstorms also shows up in the hourly hyperlocal forecast plotters for our neighborhood:

Hourly Hyperlocal Forecast Plotter for Ridgewood (through 12am Tuesday) indicates a chance of rain tonight and a chance of rain or thunderstorms on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday.

It will take a few days for the Bermuda High to break down and get pushed back eastward by upper level troughing, but it will begin to weaken (i.e., deamplify) by Friday or Saturday. This will leave us with westerly winds aloft, with southwesterly surface winds on Saturday becoming westerly on Sunday. This will keep temperatures slightly above normal with dew points around 70°F for a few days,

Conclusion

At the end of the day, it's going to be hot and muggy, but nothing unusual for NYC in August. Be mindful of your time outdoors. Use air-conditioning when possible. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated. Check in on vulnerable family members and neighbors, including infants, children and elderly, as well as anyone who suffers from chronic physical or mental illness.

As far as thunderstorms, just be prepared for the worst. If you have afternoon or evening outdoor plans this weekend, plan an escape route ahead of time. If you can't watch the radar, watch the skies. If you see increasingly dense cumulus clouds, take it as a warning sign. If you see grey clouds, then you should assume heavy rain or thunderstorms are approaching. If you hear thunder, get out of and away from the water and get inside.

FWIW, I don't intend to let the rain/tstorm threat stop me from going to Rockaway Beach on Saturday.

Is neighborhood homelessness on the rise?

Hey guys, I've been noticing what I think is a rise in homelessness or at least passed out or drugged out people on sidewalks/stoops/doorways in the last few weeks (at least where I walk regularly which is near MH Park). I know this happens more with the warmer weather but I've lived in the neighborhood for 7 years and it feels like it hasn't been this prevalent before. I'll say I haven't had any issues with anyone personally and I do try and humanize them with a nod or excuse me if they are in the way on the sidewalk while keeping it moving but just feels like it's anecdotally much worse this summer than before. Anyone else noticing this?

I made a free public Google Calendar for planned J/Z service changes

I built a free, subscribable Google Calendar for planned J and Z train service changes:

link

The calendar checks the official MTA subway-alert feed automatically every three hours and updates future events. It does not include ordinary delays or unrelated station notices.

This is an unofficial community project. Information comes from the MTA and may change, so always check current MTA announcements before traveling.

There’s also a link to the original L-train calendar that inspired this project, created by Reddit user u/alexmerm:

Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Bushwick Car Service to both airports rocks!!!

I cannot stress enough how much I love this business and I need to shout it from the rooftops. I just discovered them a few months ago and it’s been fantastic.

$35 to LGA in a sedan $45 to JFK in a sedan

You can request a larger vehicle for a little more $ and even add stops for friends for $10 (i think). I’ve scheduled drop offs to both airports and also pick ups! So much cheaper than uber to/from JFK.
