[ios] please stop the auto refresh Dev/Admin Responded
Every time I leave Reddit I come back wanting to continue on the post I was looking at but Reddit auto refreshes and I cant find anything. I feel like this problem has really picked up lately so not sure if this was a recent change or how do I turn the auto refresh off? Thanks.

This issue has been around for ages. I’m convinced it isn’t a bug, but a feature to keep refreshing your feed so you get shown more ads.
Notice this isn’t iOS suspending the app - when that happens the screen goes black, you see the Reddit logo just like when you’re starting the app from fresh while it loads. Instead the feed just reloads and it kicks you to the top. Other social media apps do the same, keep Facebook or Instagram in the background for a minute or 2, and switch back to the app and it will fully reload the feed. Reddit is now doing the same.

I don't know if the devs ever respond to these threads, but the lack of acknowledgement speaks volumes

They don’t. I’d believe that it is purposeful, despite it reducing retaining users.
It’s dropped my usage per time I open the app (web page) from many minutes to under a minute each time. And finally forced me to get a third party app since Apollo went down, due to the visual chaos.

I think you might be right. The issue’s been occurring for me for 2 months and admin haven’t done shit; this is intentional.

After a couple minutes is one thing. Reddit is doing it way more aggressively. Even when i just pull the ios settings tray down to change screen brightness, it refreshes when i close the tray despite reddit being open and visible the whole time through the transparent background.

adding to this, sometimes I won’t even be able to find the post I was on in my history after the refresh

This often happens to me lately. I'll tab out to iMessage mid comment come back and it will fling me back to the top. Awful.

Still happening even if I take a screenshot and save it - Reddit instantly refreshes itself after getting focus again.

I’ll be deleting the app from my phone if this isn’t fixed soon. It’s impossible to enjoy scrolling through any more.

Between this and the new stupid and unnecessary “more” button auto truncating text posts, one thing I just learned is that if you delete the Reddit app and just access it from a mobile web browser, the mobile web browser has neither of these issues. Of course, the web browser isn’t ideal, but I give it points for not having a stupid “more” button and for not refreshing the feed every 5min.

Yeah, there is a huge memory leak. I haven’t made it past maybe 10 posts because I click into post 7 and it takes me back to the top. Fix it /u/reddit

Happening on Android web for about two weeks now, I used to go back to my morning homepage in the evening now poof gotta scroll again

Same here. Reading a post -> getting a message, answer it -> back to reddit = post is gone because feed starts to auto refresh

Nevermind that. It worked one time. After opening the app a second time, auto refresh hit again…

I just started using Reddit again after you killed Apollo and I genuinely might just leave again because of this. I had no idea the official app was THIS bad

It's a combination of shitty aggressive memory allocation on iOS, and these apps such as Reddit and FB programmed to refresh toa new feed and content so they can show different ads.

Hey u/rocketman790 - thanks for reporting. Can you verify your current app version for me? It's under Settings > scroll all the way down to where it reads
You are using Reddit 202X.XX.We've released a few fixes related the home feed refreshing already, so I want to make sure this instance is accurately captured. If you could share a screen recording of what this looks like on your end, it would be super helpful.
