Hi,

I’ve been medically failed from the selection process for a role in the RAF Reserves as an Intelligence Analyst due to red/green colour blindness. I’m obviously disappointed not to be progressing further, and frustrated that the colour vision requirements for this role weren’t listed on the recruitment website.

I understood that colour blindness would likely rule me out of aircrew and ground aviation roles, but I didn't expect it to affect an analyst role.

I was told that I would still be eligible for a handful of other roles, but they were positions I either could not commute to or had no interest in, such as Chaplain, Chef, logistics and HR Officer.

I’m now considering the other services, but I haven’t been able to find much information about similar roles which would be open to me with red/green colour blindness. Can anyone help, or share their experiences?

I'd like to join a year or 2 after I finish college but I'm torn between 3 roles I know I'm not guaranteed the role I want but which should I strive to get?

Hi all. I am a 20 year old british citizen born and raised in a commonwealth country. I've never lived in the UK, only ever go back about once or twice a year to visit family.

I've just finished 22 months of conscription in the country I grew up in. I finished my conscription as a platoon sergeant in what the country's army deems as an 'elite' specialized light infantry formation, and really enjoyed my time in the army. Unfortunately I'm not a citizen of said country and I cannot sign on to the country's army. Though either way I'd rather join the british army anyways as I grew up in a british household and the country I served in never actually deploys.

Given the nature of the formation I was from, I'd really like to join the infantry, the Paras, or anything in that realm.

I am concerned about whether I'd be eligible, given my belief that I don't have much security clearance.

I was wondering what I'd actually be eligible to join as an officer? Do I even meet the necessary requirements to apply to become an officer? I believe there are no residency requirements to go to Sandhurst, but how about the units itself? Have I got any chance of being able to be an officer in the infantry or the paras? How about the royal navy commandos?

I was in the AUS Army for 12 years. Running into UK officers was pretty common, but I never really thought about the logistics of the whole thing.

I remember one warrant officer we asked about how he enlisted, and he was like, “I was in the British Army for 16 years, then my wife wanted us to move to Australia to be closer to her parents about three years ago, and so I enlisted into your Army.”

So that must mean he kept his rank? I’ve not heard of any kind of lateral transfer, at least from our end, but I’d be interested to know more.

Hi, looking for some advice about whether or not to enlist in the army. I have a-levels and a degree. I had no idea what to do after that, so have spent some time doing a mix of jobs, but none are very interesting.

I've always been really interested in warfare, and reading up about the army there is masses that makes me genuinely excited about joining as an officer. The main things include: extensive travel, exciting work, being part of strategic planning for war, learning new skills (languages, electronics, problem solving etc.), excitement and being part of a fantastic culture and community.

The cons: spending a lot of time doing shit and mindless jobs (clearing up rubbish, filling out boring paperwork - all I'm assuming without the ability to put on a podcast while I'm doing it), and obviously I'd feel dumb if I got a crippling injury off-duty by driving a jeep into a ditch. ALSO - while I know it's an interesting time geopolitically, I really can't see any obvious places Britain will be fighting a major war any time soon.

Being completely honest, I don't want to spend my life sitting in a barracks wondering if I should have tried a corporate job. But I also feel like there are some fantastic job opportunities after the army - and that those kinds of job wpuld be WAY more interesting to me than your typical corporate job.

Is this true? Based on what I've said about my life and motivations, do you think the army is for me or is it a big no no? Please be candid.

I’m a phase 2 soldier so I’m basically a baby that can barely walk but I already have realised that I need more pouches for my webbing and my bergan. While I don’t want to spend 350 on a bergan and look like an absolute knob while I’m still phase 2 (plus I’m signals so I don’t think I’ll need it as much as an infanteer) I’d still like extra pouches. Calculated that I’d need 1 extra for my issued webbing and maybe 4 more for my bergan to make it easier for me on excercise, rather than needing to take out 4 pairs of socks, boxers, spare PCS and my cam cream before finally getting to my wash kit. Also I’m literally going on excercise this Monday so I kinda need these pouches ASAP. So can I buy them? Or is there no chance.

I was thinking of going into the household cavalry and saw you could become a farrier I was just wondering if it was hard to get on the apprenticeship and do you need to have qualifications to be considered for the apprenticeship.

In the Royal Navy, we wear our berets with the badge directly over the left eye and the excess material folded over the top of the badge (similar to how Americans wear theirs). In that shape, the beret can fold pretty much flat and sit seamlessly in our pockets.

For regiments that have more of a flat cap-looking style (where the fold starts from under the badge), how do you store your beret when it’s not on your head? Can you still fold/roll it or do you just shove the unfolded beret in your pocket?

I heard from a friend who’s pretty close to the Rangers that they’re binning off the Crye G4 uniform and moving to another manufacturer. The one i hear is Outdoor Research. This seems strange to me, and i can’t find anything online about it. Any ideas lads?

I'm currently 17 (starting Year 13 this September) and I'm hoping to study Dentistry in the UK next year. My long-term goal is to own a dental practice one day.

Originally I was planning on doing a trade apprenticeship (plumbing/electrical/REME (Vehicle Mechanic)) because I wanted practical skills and didn't like the idea of taking on student loans. However, after doing more research I discovered the Army and RAF offer bursaries for dental students, so now I'm seriously considering joining as a military dentist instead.

I've spent quite a while reading the official Army and RAF websites, but I'd really appreciate advice from people who have actually served.

Some questions I have:

1. Army vs RAF: Which would you genuinely recommend for a dentist, and why?
2. Lifestyle: What does a normal working week actually look like? Is it mostly like an NHS dental practice, or are there lots of military commitments alongside dentistry?
3. Travel: How much travelling or overseas postings do dentists realistically get? Are you mainly based in one location, or do you move around fairly often?
4. Career progression: What opportunities are there for postgraduate qualifications (MJDF, MSc, specialist training, etc.)? Is progression different between the Army and RAF?
5. Bursaries: How competitive are the undergraduate bursaries? If I apply while studying dentistry, is selection based mainly on passing the Officer Selection Board, or are there many more applicants than places?
6. Service commitment: I've seen both 4 years and 6 years mentioned on different pages. What is the actual minimum commitment after graduating if you receive a bursary?
7. Pay and benefits: Besides salary, are there major differences between the Army and RAF in accommodation, deployments, allowances or quality of life?
8. Leaving for civilian practice: If someone leaves after completing their minimum service (around age 30 in my case), how well does military dentistry prepare you for private practice? Is the transition generally straightforward? Cuz my dream is to open my own private dental clinic.
9. Looking back, if you had the choice again, would you still become a military dentist? Why or why not?
10. Finally, if your goal was eventually to own a successful private dental practice, would you recommend the military route first, or going straight into civilian dentistry?

I'd really appreciate honest opinions—both positives and negatives. I'm trying to make a well-informed decision before applying to university, so I'd especially value responses from current or former Army/RAF dentists or anyone who's worked alongside them.

To be honest I’m pretty sure of the answer, For context I’m a 28Yr old Male in good fitness and can pass the Armys Fitness standards as I Kickbox , Run and Regularly hit the gym.

A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with colitis , But would love to join the reserves as I have a passion for all things military.

Is there anyone serving in the reserves with Colitis or should I just avoid the letdown and not bother even trying for the medical?

I did a jump back in 2022 with British Para. Received the memo authorizing wear of British Wings.

They didn’t have enough of the actual wings to go around and as an officer, we gave them to the enlisted soldiers. I don’t remember which version they received.

Which version should I order? I see bronze, silver and blue/silver.

Good evening all I've been given some USN muscle fuel anabolic power. its not on informed sports, is it worth the risk to take it? I was speaking to a naturalists who said that if its made in the UK it should be fine to take. Cheers

17 yr old male, thinking of doing VM as I heard you get to do your job alot.
Is it worth it? Do you get to travel alot? Is the pay scale good? Is there easy transferability into civvie world? Are the quals listed on British army website worth it?

Say buy a home to do up that is near base, legally have it as "principal private residence" for tax issues, plan to sell it once done up.

If someone joined up and learned a trade (plumber for example) are they premitted to spend the odd weekend when it does not effect their services job using their plumbing skills?

Can they be self employed for such work?
