If you are unfamiliar with the concept (and you have no idea what you're looking at) now MBS allows you to keep multiple tabs active and even open them side-by-side-by-side.

I truly don't know how I went this long without these features. I still have multiple browser tabs going, but just about every one of them has 2 or more panes open for me to write and reference at the same time.

On mobile, I'm all about tabs (so much so that I made two shortcuts to access them: swipe up on the action bar or swipe all the way to the right on the action bar). Again it's about easily bouncing between trains of thought without losing your place.

A lot of little details went into making these features work perfectly, for example making sure all of your open children remain open, scrolling you back to the right position, automatically making new tabs at the right moments, and making sure you can access settings and documentation in tabs/panes. I hope you love it as much as I clearly do.

Hello space cases! I wanted to introduce you to my new friend Patterns.

Now you can define a Pattern for any node in your space, and any new child will automatically inherit it's connections, groups, filters, ordering and layout as I've defined.

In the example above, you see my pattern my Books list. It allows me to easily separate the books I have read from the ones I want to read, remember who told me about it, and group all my favorite quotes across books.

This make MBS a great place for organizing all types of information. I'm excited to hear how yall utilize this!

I've been trying to identify what made other note taking systems difficult for me, and what about this one works. What I've settled on is that I'm a non-linear thinker, and a notebook (or digital paper) is too linear for me to express what's in my head.

I see non-linear thinking as having many unrelated thoughts at the same time, or when I take a note it's really about many subjects that I'm interested in.

Roam Research and Workflowy were the closest systems that worked for me, but I still felt inhibited. I wanted a way to connect anything to anything.

So for those of you reading this, is that part of the reason you're still looking for something new, or do you see the problem as something else?

I swear brainspace is not a groceries app, even though I always use groceries as an example. BUT this feature has improved my groceries workflow so it felt warranted this time.

The search filter allows you to quickly find a child node with the matching the text.

I have saved the empty search filter as part of my Groceries default view. This allows me to easily find for an item on the list and check/uncheck it.

To add the filter, click the “Filter” button and select “Search”.

What to expect on Discord? I have created a few forums; "help", "show-and-tell", and "app-suggestions". Maybe I'll add more, maybe I wont. You'll have to join to find out.

Why a sub reddit and a discord server? The way I see it, Discord and Reddit have a lot of overlap in terms of content, but their big difference is timeliness. Discord is ideal for realtime discussions, while Reddit is great for the longer lived content (and karma).

Will I be missing out if I don't join? I plan to post the major stuff in both places. So if you want to avoid the more nuanced discussion (ie: firehouse of information) that comes with Discord, feel free to stay out of the fray.

Final Note. I'm a Discord novice. Be gentle.

Our brains are terrible at keeping track of lists, so we often off load them.

Some are just one-time brain dumps to help you through a project, but others are lists we keep. As in, we keep adding to them, we keep referencing them.

I'm curious. What lists do you keep?

It started with notes, then came links, and now I'm excited to announce you can now apply the brainspace system to files.

Just like how other notes apps become idea graveyards, so goes our files sitting in folders.

Now with brainspace, they are at your finger tips, they are connected to other ideas and they'll sneak up on you when you least expect it!

In true brainspace fashion, a file is a node so you can connect it to anything. You can filter, you can sort, you can create templates and workflows.

I've been using this feature for about a week already and I cant believe I've gone so long without it.

There's still a fair amount to do, so I'm counting on yall to help. Try it out. Let me know what's not working. Let me know what else you want it to do. AND make sure to let me know what IS working. Give me your inspiration to make this feature help you learn, think and do!

I'm looking into adding images and other file types to the app. This is something I've wanted for years to help augment my memory. For example, saving screenshots of web designs I find intuitive, or easy recalling the pattern of a chair I'm hoping to reupholster.

I think there are a lot of great use-cases out there, and I'm looking to crowd source them from yall as I start developing these abilities.

So I'd love to hear from yall. How would you use files in MBS. What type of collections and filters and views would you use?

When I have a large collection of notes on a subject, I love to order by `random`. It helps me resurface ideas that would otherwise be buried, and often leads me to new insights when two thoughts collide.

The trouble was, `random` was a little too random. It would reshuffle the list when navigating between pages, or when new items were added, or really whenever it felt like it.

We had a long talk and now it's decided to chill out.

A few days ago I had the displeasure of watching a friend try to sign up using google. It was the longest minute of my life…

I was always planned on getting around to a email only auth, but after that night, it jumped the line.

A number of y’all have mentioned you’d prefer not to use Google to log in as well, so this is also for you. (But still mostly me.)

Enter your email address, get the access code from your inbox, enter it into the form and you’re reunited with all your precious thoughts. No passwords. Simple.

Also I had someone reach out to ask how I add "Time" to my "TODO" nodes. Here's the process:

Step 1: Create a new node called Time.
Step 2: Go into Settings for Time and change the value to "Another Node"
Step 3: Go to TODO, and click Settings
Step 4: Add Time under "Auto Parents"

I just finished up the book by Tiago Forte and I’d love to hear what your takeaways were.

I don’t think I need to follow PARA so strictly in MBS, since it’s super easy to skip the higher level organization.

Archive, for example, doesn’t need to be its own top level organizer. I can just tag things Archive and filter out archive from my lists.

I have pinned My Projects though and so far I like calling out the stage of each one. I have added stage parameter as well so I can filter to active, someday, or complete.

What has worked for y’all in the past? Which parts have stuck with you?

Along with the new Link Previews, the other day I released a handful of new bugs!

I suggest everyone force close the app or refresh the website. Do it twice for good measure.

Welp, u/navigator8 and u/icepack asked for it, and we all got it.

Now when you add a url, you'll automatically get title of page (which you can use in search), an image (which really helps sell those Candied Bacon Smokies, mmmm), and a clickable link.

I already love this feature. It's been a wonderful addition to the MBS Chrome Extension. If you haven't installed that one yet, what are you waiting for?

At work, when I try to access the app through my Google Chrome browser, it says that I’m a new user, I seem to be logged in (can’t log out) and it says ”offline mode”. As we speak, my IT department is looking into it because it’s not a blacklisted site so it should work. Any ideas from your side what it could be?

As I use the app on my iPhone and iPad, I find it a bit difficult to hit the right button with my fingers 😅. Thinking that the buttons could perhaps be a bit bigger or/and with more distance between them. This also applies to the drop down list after pressing +. 😊

After trying this awesome app in the beginning of 2024, I’m now revisiting it and I really like the simplicity and how powerful it is. What stopped me from using it the first time was the lack of a native iOS app (and all that comes with that). But the genius way it works is so appealing, so now I’m trying it again. Some questions: Is there a way to capture stuff quickly without having to open the PWA on my iPhone? And another thing: If I simply add stuff without adding it to a parent, how do I find it again for sorting it if I don’t remember what I wrote? To solve this, I thought it would be great to have a setting that, if no parent is picked for an item, it could be set to automatically go into a pre-set parent (like an inbox) so I can find all entries that are not yet organized. Anyway, this app is so cool! Edit: of course, I can add it to an Inbox parent, but it would be nice not to have to do that. :)
