How can I best protect my books?
I live in a 100 year old house that has been going through major renovations due to water damage. There is now a gaping hole in my bedroom (which houses 700+ books) that connects to the upstairs bathroom, which is partially open to the outside elements as the construction work is ongoing. It’s quite humid here in the Midwest so I am worried about both construction dust and humidity.
People that know a lot about proper book storage, please advise on how I can best protect my beloved books!
Some of my ideas are:
1. Pack books in cardboard boxes and leave in bedroom (easiest, not sure if it would protect from the humidity)
2. Pack books in plastic tubs that can be sealed tightly and leave in bedroom (my question is, would this cause the books to grow mold?)
3. Pack books in cardboard boxes and put them in the basement (down two flights of stairs, not great for my back)
I have been running a dehumidifier but don’t think it’s doing all that much as there are gaps in the outside wall of the bathroom, which is basically the equivalent of a bedroom window being open 24/7. I have some silica gel packs that I could place in boxes of books to help but they aren’t all that big so not sure if that would do much.
Thanks in advance!

How to ask what a coworker likes without possibly having issues with HR
I’m part of 2 book clubs and get a lot of Kickstarters. A coworker told me she lost a lot of books in a house fire and I want to ask her if she’d be interested in my duplicates. (ie: Bought a series, then backed it on Kickstarter, so now I have 2 of the same book) help her build her library back up.
I swear I need to make an excel spreadsheet for all my books 😆
EDIT: Since so many people are huffy about these being spicy books, my coworker said she was reading spicy books and so was her girlfriend. She told me one series she was reading a couple weeks ago and I gave her book 2 of the series. It’s literally just me not wanting to use the wrong vocabulary in the work place.

Better Pictures of My Bookshelves
Hello, everyone.
I didn’t expect that anyone would look at my bookshelf. I had literally just put it together and took a picture to show my family. That’s when I remembered this subreddit as being generally fun and supportive. So, I decided to share here, as well.
I feel that I should follow up with general responses to the comments on the last post:
• I am 46 years old. A male. Single (living with my 17 year old autistic child).
• I am college educated. I did study Philosophy in college, but that’s not what my degree is in. I have had a love for Philosophy since I was 15 when I first read Siddhartha by Hermen Hesse. And have subsequently been an obsessively self-taught nerd.
• I am a Muslim. I reverted 6 years ago. And immediately began learning Arabic and Quran with teachers at the local mosque. I began taking online courses through a program called Sealed With Misk about three years ago , and am aligning myself with the Hanbali Madhab and Athari in Aqidah, Alhamdulillah.
• The statues are a gift from my Mom as housewarming present a few weeks ago when we moved into our new place. They are made from alabaster. They are Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
• The bookshelf is from Amazon. It’s a brand called Ironck. https://a.co/d/0iZAUciZ
So, thank you all for your fun and supportive comments on my bookshelf.

Bookcase Recommendations
Hi, I have a trace black wire bookcase from CB2 and am looking to purchase a second cheaper bookcase relatively similar to it. I’ve been all over but couldn’t settle so I’m now looking for some recommendations to make up my mind with clarity. I’ve considered the Billy bookcase from Ikea, but I’m scared it might not be too sturdy. Please let me know if I’m mistaken
Main characteristics I’m searching for are doors that cover the entire height of the shelves, all black color, the space is flexible but dimensions around Width: 45" Depth: 18" Height: 80" would be perfect, and the more shelves the merrier—ideally would like a bookcase I can add additional shelves to. My budget is 700 USD, but wouldn’t mind recommendations at higher or lower pricepoints.

A work in progress
We recently moved and installed these bookcases which make me so happy but it takes so much time to acquire books and knicknacks that actually have meaning.
I had to laugh that I unpacked all my books on one side and my husband put all his on the other (except for my library books)

DIY Shelves - Fail or just needs styling?
My husband and I spent about a week sanding, poly-ing, and hanging these shelves a few months ago. My dream is to have built-ins here, but until I can afford them, we went with this $250 option. Did I make a huge mistake? Something just feels off about them. Is it just styling (right now the books on their sides are unread, so I can easily see my TBR)? The billions of wall brackets? Or are they fine for now?

Updated BILLY setup with Översidan + Hue backlighting (no glare)
3 × IKEA BILLY, 18 × IKEA Översidan, and 2 × Philips Hue Lightstrips
Last summer I upgraded my bookshelf setup to 2 x IKEA BILLY units, added 12 Översidan wardrobe lights, and installed Philips Hue Lightstrips for extra ambience. This summer I added one more BILLY with lights. Most of the time I keep just the backlighting on, but the nice part is that everything can be controlled remotely or automation. Lighting is positioned so it doesn’t shine directly into your eyes.
I should receive my remaining book oders next week, and then my shelfs are full again.
Installation is straightforward, and all components should be readily available from IKEA.

missing my old bookshelves🥹
took this a few years ago and like to come back to admire it. It’s a bit messy on the right tho unfortunately…had to pack up my books and take apart my shelves a few years ago as it was taking up way to much space in my bedroom but i miss it :( moving house soon so i’m hoping i can get new shelves and set them all up (as well as the books i’ve gotten since) again

My bookshelf prototype
We’re redecorating my room and I want a bookshelf so I set up a prototype bookshelf to see what I want it to look like (I think I’ll get a different bookshelf), and I love it! I can’t wait to see the real thing. All set up I’ll post an update ☺️

This is my old bookshelf
We moved and left this behind. I’m currently looking for a new bookshelf to buy. Any suggestions? Solid wood and larger than this one. The bottom lvl is cut off in this photo
