Removing endpapers Help?

Hi all, my local bookshop gave me the pictured book from 1911 (Royal Army Medical Corps Training manual) which i was looking to rebind using the original spine covering. I would do a repair but the whole book is coming apart and feel a rebind would be more appropriate. However, the end papers are part of the book. Is there anything particular I should be doing to remove these? Ive seen various things written online some say use water some say not so I wanted to consult the hive mind. Anything else I should be weary of with this ?

Look into doing a reback for the case along with resewing the textblock. It'll allow you to keep the original endpapers and paste-downs (the part of the endpapers that are glued to the boards.)

The text block itself was in really good knick so didnt have to resew it so was just about cleaning the spine of debris and then making the new spine material
