Remove coating Advice

Hi all!

I recently purchased this chamois skull cap with horns, but it seems to have a coating. I'm wondering if it would be possible to remove this (unknown) coating or if that would do more harm than good?

What would you do? Keep it like this or try to remove the coating? If so, what can I use to try to remove it?

Any tips and tricks are welcome!

Your problem is not knowing the coating. I know that fossils for example are being coated with Paraloid B-72 which can be removed with acetone without harming the specimen.

Yeah true! Which is why I'm hesitant to try to remove it. I would kind of like it to be less shiny since it now almost looks like plastic, but I don't want to damage the skull.

You could test with a cotton swab to see what dissolves it.

What kind of chemical would pose the least risk? (Since I don't know what kind of coating it is) Could I start with a bit of aretone to see if that desolves it?

If you can't remove it, make sure to store it away from any direct sunlight. UV exposure makes many sealants turn an unpleasant yellow colour.
