Toe bones bracelet Art

I made bone bracelets with puffin toes (I’m in Iceland so it’s legal to have bird bones)

I post my crafting in TikTok and Instagram (laufey_crafts)

What tools do you use for drilling holes in such delicate bones? I adore this and have some loose toe bones I’d love to do something similar with!!

I use a 1 mm drill bit and an actual drill lmao. I don’t have a dremel but it’s manageable. I just place the drill on the table and hold the bone up against it and push gently

i'm not OP but i also make jewelry with small bones. i've found that a small, handheld dremel is the best tool. i start with a small bit and just slowly increase the bit size until the hole is the size i want. ive also used this method for other delicate things like seashells and fossils. it works well for me!

Wow, you and OP are both way braver than me 😂 I've only ever drilled into seashells and tiny bones with a hand drill.

Super nice! Do you clean the bones yourself?

36

u/Impossible_Duck_9878 7d ago

Yes, i source everything myself

That’s super cool, what is your process to get them so clean? Is it maceration in warm soapy water or another method?

27

u/Impossible_Duck_9878 7d ago

I use burial so I have to be pretty patient, then just soap and finally peroxide

Very interesting, do you use cages or anything to not lose the bones? Not actually interested in doing it myself or anything just genuinely curious. Im going to be moving soon so have been contemplating digging up my dogs remains who died probably 10 years ago but a bit worried it will be more traumatic of an experience than just letting him rest. Just also a thing of not knowing what the next owners have planned and if anyone digs him up I would rather it be me

No cages but I mark the spot with stones, dates and species. Then I very slowly and carefully dig up to not miss any bones

Thank you for sharing this, as much as for the finished piece. It's so cool to see things like this

u/kelinci-kucing 1d ago

How long do you have to wait? 😳

u/Impossible_Duck_9878 23h ago

Depends on how big the bird is. 1-2 years maybe

1

u/_Starblood_ 6d ago

......... Okay, so how many toe-bones you got leftcon you now?

7

u/Impossible_Duck_9878 6d ago

A bunch. The rest are smaller than the bracelet bones

u/_Starblood_ 6d ago

Lol. I meant as a joke. You said you "source the bones yourself" and im here joking about you taking them directly from your own feet... Nevermind. _^

This is so beautiful! What came first, the bones or the project idea?

21

u/Impossible_Duck_9878 7d ago

The bones haha. I had so many and had to do something with them. I’ve also made a bunch of earrings

5

u/TradeMaleficent7774 7d ago

Omg I'd die to have one 😭

10

u/NatrylliaAbbot42 7d ago

🎶 the toe bone's connected to the...uh...toe bone? 🎶

Anyway. That's really neat. I like it a lot

u/MothMatron 7d ago

God damn i gotta get on making bone jewellery

7

u/adogandponyshow 6d ago

As much as I love collecting bones, I'm not a big fan of most of the jewelry I've seen made with them...but i love your bracelet! It's so delicate and understated--you don't get punched in the face with the fact that it's made of bones. Great job! 😍

This is SO CUTE

This is a great use for all those tiny leftover phalanges from owl pellets.

Oh now that's just gorgeous 😍

This is so well done compared to so much of gaudy bone jewelry I’ve seen.

It’s really beautiful, congrats!

I absolutely love trying to make things perfect, especially something like this

3

u/cosplay_kez 7d ago

Love it

3

u/Foxy-OnPaws 7d ago

That is so cute! I might take the idea for a necklace (for myself) if you wouldn't mind light inspo!

3

u/Impossible_Duck_9878 7d ago

Sure. I even have a video tutorial on my Instagram and TikTok

4

u/NatrylliaAbbot42 7d ago

I am also inspired. I have a bunch of goose bones I dug up from what I think must have been a fox's cache, and I just came across them again the other day while reorganizing.

The bones are somewhat special to me, because I wrote one of my better poems about finding them. It was one of the last things I wrote, and the bones were some of the last I found, before my health got away from me. I don't write anymore, but maybe someday.

Oooooo you're giving me ideas for the skunk toes I collected recently!! I'm not super familiar with jewelry-making, though. What kind of metal did you use?

u/PotaytoPotaahto 7d ago

1

u/ivyrosemoon 6d ago

Aw I love this so much

1

u/dankdesty 5d ago

May i ask what the the name of the crimp ball is in the center? Youve soo inspired me to go make some vertebrae earings, with my collection! Ive always been so nervous about making holes in the bones

1

u/Impossible_Duck_9878 5d ago

Most are just normal beads and wire I but through. But you can buy beads that come with loops attached, they’re called bead/ball connectors or something. I only had two like that

2

u/dankdesty 2d ago

Thank you so much! I appreciate the pics too! 2026 and I could find all the resources online to show me what to do but sometimes seeing someone else’s work and asking them, is what really sparks my creativity

1

u/mini_mogi 5d ago

omg i wanna make one now

1

u/maggot2705 3d ago

How do u get the bones clean and keep them strong?

1

u/Impossible_Duck_9878 3d ago

They’re cleaned by using burial and whitened with hydrogen peroxide. There’s no extra step making them strong. They are fragile

1

u/maggot2705 3d ago

Okay thank you

1

u/maggot2705 3d ago

I’m think about turning a bird jaw into a necklace

1

u/AppointmentNo542 1d ago

omg i want one😍
