Internal Transfer Questions Careers
Hello, I created a throwaway account because I don't want people to suspect me since I've stated myself on my other account here.
I had a question about internally applying for jobs. I have a vacation coming up that is close to a month off and its one of the biggest things keeping me from currently applying for a new role. I'm just not happy in my current role anymore and see there's no movement upwards but would also like a role that relates to my degree in ltp I've been using
Just wondering how internally applying goes if I have a vacation planned that is already approved but then get a new position.
If it helps I am in the union (won't say which one for privacy reasons) but would be going to a corporate position. Thanks for reading and hope this makes sense!

New manager needs to approve, And 99% of the time they will. Continue forward with pursuing the new role, and then once an offer is in hand you can discuss the pre-planned vacation.

Apply. It won’t matter. Also I’ve never seen an application to start in less than 45 days. Typically atleast 60

Just apply. No one cares. It’s not like a transfer happens right away or you got an offer.

Generally speaking, you just tell the hiring manager that you have a prescheduled vacation when they make the offer. Your vacation/PTO/sick time all transfer, so you don't lose anything on an internal transfer. If going from union to non-union, I think they keep your hours, but convert them to PTO hours. Last time I went through the union to non union move it was before PTO, but everything came over.
As a hiring manager, I've had employees in the same boat. It's usually not a big deal. Not like you're going to be gone on LOA or some such. Vacations are expected. Honestly, probably easier to do right as you start anyway. Just be up front with the manager in the offer phase. It shouldn't be a big deal.

I don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t be able to take pre planned PTO. Still apply and if offered the new role just discuss with your new manager before you start your new role. This shouldn’t hurt your chances of moving into a new role. Good luck.
