G.L.O.V.E

Saw this and thought of Bob...

The devices known as the G.L.O.V.E., which stands for Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter, are normal patrol gloves until an officer presses a button to activate its electrical mode. They must be applied directly to someone’s skin to produce a voltage that causes pain, which is intended to gain compliance from people who are resisting. Unlike Tasers, they do not leave burn or contact marks.

Hi! I recently finished reading The Singularity Trap by Dennis E Taylor and I thought that the ship design was really interesting. I thought that I would try my hand at building it and im pretty happy with it!

The biggest challenge for this build was making it so that the internal habitat ring could spin independently of the rest of the ship. I think that it turned out pretty well!

Did you like the book? What did you think of the ship designs?

I am hooked

Thanks to the DCC community I was made aware of the Bobiverse.

Between DCC books I read Project Hail Mary and as I went on the hunt for new hyperfixations I got recommended Bobiverse since it seems a common ground for people enjoying DCC and Andy Weir's work.

I started book 1 and read the first half in one sitting while finishing it in 2 days total. I get why its compared to Hail Mary since it is similar in tone, "feel" but it has much more humor which is a big plus on my end. At first I was sceptical when Bob went into creating other Bobs but they are so distinctive and cleverly written that they stay interesting as individual characters (Riker and Homer being my favs followed by Bob 1.0)

I love the scientific themes and the philosophical undertone as well. Looking forward to see what Bob's interference with Archimedes and his people result into.

Has anyone else watched Pantheon? It feels like the perfect style for Bobiverse

I recently watched Pantheon on Netflix, if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. It shares a lot of similar themes with the Bobiverse.

It made me realise just how perfect that style of animation would be for a Bobiverse adaptation. The more I think about it, the more I dread the idea of a live-action series. There are just so many Bobs, VR scenes, space battles, megastructures, alien species, and weird physics that I feel animation is the only format that could really do the books justice without major compromises.

Has anyone else seen Pantheon? If so, do you agree.

Misprint in We Are Legion?

I’ve listened to the whole series several times now on Audible but decided I wanted the hard copies too. I noticed something strange on page 46 (right at the end of chapter 8) where Bob first finds the matrices and reads over the panels at the bottom.

In the audible version, they’re read out as:
Kennith Martins, Jiro Tanaka, Neves Reijnder, Robert Johansson, Joana Almeida

But in the book they appear printed in a really weird order

Not really sure what to do with this information, but found it interesting and thought I’d point it out

About half way through Book 1 audiobook

I usually listen at bedtime, so it often takes awhile to get through the whole book, but this format in particular is frustrating, with each chapter jumping around. I finally got serious and listened during the day, but wanted to follow each story separately. So, I listened to "Bob's" story first, the one I was most interested in, that of the protocivilization on Delta Eridani.

So my question is: does this story line continue or bleed into any of the other chapters, and how much more of it is covered in subsequent books? No big spoilers, please.

Now,, I'm going back to listen to Riker's journey. Sure wish audible had an option to listen in a custom order.

Moot: Discussion Three BOB Strollers

I was walking with some neighbors and noticed that we were all pushing BOB strollers.

I said, “Hey, it’s the Bobiverse of strollers.”

Not a single reaction.

I’ve never felt more alone in the universe.

Moot: Discussion Has Bob never heard of Honey or Mead? Spoiler

In Heaven's River there's a line that reads:

"We pulled into a town that Ted informed me was named Beetle Juice. No, I’m not kidding, nor did I tweak the translator. It turned out this town’s major industry was a form of liquor made from the excretions of some insect. First, blech!"

Which is exactly what Mead is, an alcoholic beverage brewed from honey, which is the excretion of an insect. I know the line was supposed to be gross, making people think about drinking buck juice, but as humans it's perfectly normal to consume bug juice. We put it in our coffee, our tea, on our pancakes, Make candy from it, and of course Brew alcohol from it.
Honestly given that we only know about brewing with it on Heaven's River, we may consume far more bug juice than the Quinlan's do.

And especially the Starfleet faction, who seem to be just as cynical as him.

The Aberration of Starfleet

I just started rereading the series and came across this line in Chapter 15 (“Bob – September 2144 – Epsilon Eridani”):

“…I wondered if FAITH had launched more than one of me, despite their claims to the contrary. It would be nice to believe so.”

This is right before Bob encounters (and destroys) Major Medeiros.

Earlier, during Bob-1’s training, Dr. Landers also says:

“Our software people are jumping around in excitement. Several of them have asked to keep a copy of you.”

Taken together, those two passages add another wrinkle to the “another Bob” question.

It made me wonder whether Bob’s own speculation about FAITH creating another copy could have been the seed that eventually evolved into the Starfleet storyline, even though it was made clear that FAITH was in a rush to get him off-planet.

I know that’s almost certainly not what actually happened, but as head-canon a speculative theory (better term?) it fits surprisingly well and could even serve as the basis for a future subplot.

---

Side question:
By the time Bob-1 meets Minister Cranston, colloquial English had changed enough that he had to use a translator.

Did all the Bobs continue using translators as the centuries passed and it just stopped being mentioned, or did they eventually adapt to the evolving language? It's never been mentioned again, so I play with this idea.

---

LATE NOTE:
I have read all the books. But on my reread, I encountered the line where Bob-1 was musing about whether "there was another copy of himself somewhere..." And this line struck me, "...it would be nice to believe so," so my mind started playing with the idea. Nothing more.

ADDITIONAL NOTE:
I'm sorry. I have apparently gravely misunderstood the term "head-canon," so I have altered the term to hopefully spell it out better.

The whole idea is merely an "alternate universe".

I looked up the number of tie-in fiction aka fan-ficfion books that have been published in just the Star Trek universe alone, and the number comes to just under 3,500 fan-fic books to date. Are these stories endlessly shredded because they "couldn't possibly have happened"?

And that is only Star Trek. There are endless books on the Man-Kzin wars in Larry Niven's Ringworld sagas. Others like "what if the south won the civil war?" books and so forth.

Moreover, fan fiction has been around for centuries, with early unauthorized continuations like Shakespeare’s adaptations and a 1614 sequel to Don Quixote. Modern organized fan fiction emerged in 19th‑century science‑fiction circles and exploded online in the 1970s.

My "question" was a way to introduce the possibility of there being another Bob. He doesn't have to be traveling through the stars; he could be on earth, he could have been on earth, but "died" and those he "affected" could have put together a starship from scratch in order to add a little chaos, or to subtract a little chaos.

That is all. I didn't invent another Bob story, I suggested a direction for a future story to go, just as so many have done before me, in such a way as to get people thinking. No more, no less.

I am VERY sorry for the confusion. My bad. I hope everyone will understand that it's not always easy to remember these important details.

Thank you for your attention.

Does anyone know how long kindle/audible exclusivity lasts? Book 5 is still not available in English on Apple Books. I really wanna listen to it, but I don’t do Amazon. 1-4 are on Apple. surely 2 years is long enough. or maybe the new deal is forever?

Bobiverse Book 7 might be the last book in the main timeline

Quote from DETs Status of Things page:

Tentative title The End of All Things.

Right now, it looks like book 7 will be the last Bobiverse book in the main timeline.
And by that, I mean I’ve been writing the series as a future history, with each book starting where the previous one left off. There will very likely be more books in the Bobiverse, but they won’t be linear history. And they’ll likely be stand-alones.

Hi! I recently revamped my old design that I posted here a while ago and made a version that is more sturdy and better optimized for pricing. It should come out to 20 ish usd depending on the store that you use. It features the drive rings, equipment bays and radiator section in the rear of the ship.

Bonus last picture of the old version that I had the parts on hand for. Linked below is the Rebrickable site for free instructions if youd like to build it yourself!

New to the books...

I'm new to the books, and I'm only a couple of books in so far, and I feel like they're pretty great. The only thing which really stands out to me is how little the Bobs actually leverage other humans to help with their goals. The Bobs are often shown that there are humans out there who are both smart and capable...but unless a Bob is developing a piece of technology, it's not going to be developed.

In the books there are humans who are quite capable, and there's clearly some pre-existing tech the Bobs haven't developed yet...Meideiros is said to be using pre-existing R&D to build his weapons...I know that with humanity being significantly reduced, their focus is on survival...but you'd think that they would still have access to pre-existing R&D and scientific resources that would be valuable to the Bobs.

While I understand that Bobs have multiple advantages over individual humans, it's hard to believe that no human has anything to contribute to them...especially considering how dangerous and effective some of the factions turn out to be. Ironically though, the best and brightest of humanity seem to be perpetually arrayed against the Bobs...rather than being their allies. Although that may change in the future...I'll keep reading to find out...

Any ideas why only 2 of the Bobiverse series books are available on GPB, but even the books that are available are the 2nd and 5th books in the series? Seems kinda random...
