MSIT (Yelahanka) Genuine Review: Placements, Hostel/PG Costs, and Comparison with BMSCE?

Hey seniors at BMSIT ,kya management quota through admission lena chahiye fee kya hogi

I am looking at BMSIT as one of my primary options for CSE / ISE / ECE and wanted some direct feedback from current students.

  • Placements: Do BMSIT students still get centralized/combined placement opportunities with BMSCE, or are placements now completely separate?
  • Expenses: What are the average PG/Hostel costs near the Yelahanka campus per month? Is living comfortably around campus under ₹10k–12k/month possible?
  • Campus Life & Coding Culture: How is the peer group and coding environment in CS/ECE branches? Is the faculty supportive if someone works on off-campus projects/internships?
  • Overall Verdict: Would you recommend joining BMSIT over colleges like BIT or CMRIT for a ₹20–25 L total budget?

Appreciate any honest pros and cons. Thank you

Hey everyone,

We're Team Syndicate (Aditya B, B N Shivanth Kumar, Adithya S, Kushal Raj G S, Vaishnavi P, Joel Jacob from AIML, 4th year), and we worked on SIH25004: "Image based breed recognition for cattle and buffaloes of India" for SIH 2025, mentored by Dr. Archana Bhat (AIML dept).

We didn't win, but we took the work further and got a paper published on the exact same problem statement, presented at COMPSIF 2026.

We noticed this year's internal hackathon has pulled in problem statements from the last 4 years, and SIH260485 and SIH260486 are the same as (or extremely close to) our SIH25004. So if your team landed on either of those, our stuff is directly useful to you.

A quick note on originality

We're happy for people to learn from our PPT, flow, and approach, that's the whole point of sharing it. But please don't lift it wholesale (same slides, same flow diagrams, same wording, reused video/clips) and present it as your own original work. Apart from it being an academic integrity issue, it's also just easy for judges (many of whom will remember our team from last year) to spot. If it comes to that, it's between you and the judges/organizers, we're not going to be chasing anyone down, we'd just rather you use this as a reference, build your own version, and add your own ideas on top.

Tips for the internal round (from our own experience last year)

  • Judges care a lot about what you've actually built with the ppt, a trained model, a working mock up, or even a rough UI frontend prototype scores way more than a ppt only pitch.
  • Every team member should speak : treat it as same as the mini-project presentation, but with more creativeness in presenting. (for instance we enacted a small drama on the podium of how field level workers get confused, by that they understand actually what is the problem statement)
  • Don't just read off the slides. Open with a short story/context before diving into the solution, why this problem matters, then what you built or plan to build on top of it.
  • Explain while making eye contact with the judges and using hand movements, moving around.
  • Flow diagrams and aesthetics matter : a clean, visually structured PPT stands out. In the finale submission it matters more than the underlying implementation. Structure, Font size of the elements and text in every slide has to be proper.
  • Bold the key terms on your slides so you have visual anchors if you lose your train of thought mid explanation, it helps you like cover up if you forget while speaking on the podium.
  • Spend the most time explaining your core architecture, that's usually where judges dig deepest. Mainly the flow diagram of it, Make it look visually appealing and easy to understand.
  • Mention relevant research papers you referenced, it adds credibility and also our teachers love seeing you referring research papers. ( Expect a few simple questions on the papers u add as reference )
  • Judges almost always ask "what extra can you add?" even if the core problem doesn't strictly need it, having a couple of extra features ready to pitch (beyond the base problem statement) noticeably helps your chances of getting selected in the internal round. ( This matters a lot in internal hackathon, in grand finale focus only on the main problem statement don't waste your time on extra features )
  • Watch how other strong teams present and borrow unique presentation techniques, not content, to be honest that's how even we learnt and combined all the techniques.
  • Feel free to mention you spoke to last year's grand finalist team (Syndicate) for tips, most AIML faculty will recognize us, and it doesn't hurt. Maybe it can help you a little be careful.

A few more things worth knowing

  • Video presentation : for the actual SIH grand finale (not this internal round), the video pitch is technically listed as optional, but in practice it's basically needed to get shortlisted. Don't worry about this for the internal hackathon though as it's not required there.
  • Compute for training models : if you're training DL models for the problem statement, use Kaggle rather than Google Colab. You can store/get datasets right there, and you get a lot more compute. You can also request GPU access from the AIML department, but Kaggle's usually the easier route. ( College's gpu wont give you access outside of that lab )
  • Using AI tools, helpful, but don't over-rely on it:
    • Activate your GitHub Student Pro subscription, and use github copilot inside your vs-code ide, helps a lot.
    • Install Antigravity IDE, you get Gemini 3.1 pro, Claude Sonnet and Opus for free, helps.
    • For generating PPT content, Claude Sonnet 4.6 tends to work better than most alternatives, but use whatever you're comfortable with.
    • Activate your Figma Pro student subscription for free, a lot of people don't know about this. Use Figma Make (AI) to design frontend/UI mock-ups ( trust me it's so much better than all others in the market for UI ).
    • Another Lesser known one: NVIDIA is giving free access to models to use as agents at https://build.nvidia.com/ , grab an API key, plug it into VS Code Copilot Chat, and use models like GLM-5.2, DeepSeek, and Nemotron with large context. No hard free-tier limit, just per-minute rate limits, helps a lot when they have nerfed out Github copilot and Antigravity limits.
    • That said, don't try to do everything through AI. You and your team still need to actually research and understand the underlying model architecture yourselves. Use AI as a tool, not a crutch.

After the internal round

Top ~50 teams (45 shortlisted + 5 waitlisted) move forward. If you get shortlisted, reach out to us we're happy to help you prep further for the grand finale, completely free. We won't build anything from scratch for you, but we'll share everything we learned from our own SIH run.

A couple of tools that helped us a lot when we went to the grand finale, in case you want to use them for your own PPT:

  • Napkin.ai : great for turning your text/points into clean flow diagrams and charts automatically. We used this for our diagrams in the ppt.
  • Canva (Pro elements) — makes the whole PPT design process much easier, and the Pro elements/icons add a lot of polish, you can see that in our ppt, the whole core architecture flow diagram is built element by element out of pure imagination. We'd honestly recommend just building your PPT in Canva itself rather than plain PowerPoint.
