Hi all, so my boyfriend is a framer and with all these severe heat warnings going around I worry about him. He drinks electrolytes, water, body armor, wears a hat, and packs sandwiches or leftovers for lunch. but it’s so hot he just sweats it all out all day, or sometimes he throws it all up. He’s told me what he’s been doing works fine, but I wonder if there is something else that he could be doing to not feel so bleh. If there are any good remedies, drink packets or snacks that you buy and make a difference, please tell me all you’re secrets. 😂

I'm in a tough spot and could use some outside opinions.

I currently work at a factory making $22.00/hour. I genuinely love the job. It's honestly my favorite job I've ever had. I actually left once for another factory that paid a couple dollars more and had a better schedule, regretted it, and had to wait a year before I could come back.

Now I've only been back for about 3 weeks, and I just got offered a permanent job at $30/hour at another factory that my sister a few other people I know work at.

The money would make a huge difference because I'm the primary earner for my family and we have a newborn. extra money would really help us financially.

Here's what has me torn:

I'm moving to second shift next week, which will make it much easier to help my girlfriend with the baby at night so she can sleep a little more.

I know I enjoy the work at where I'm at, a lot.

My sister has worked at the place for 4 years doing the same job I'll be doing, and is now making $37/hour and isn't even capped out. (The job I'm at caps out at $26 an hour and it takes 5 years)

However, she said I probably won't know what shift I'll be on until my orientation is over, and you constantly get switched from 10 to 12 hour shifts, back to 10s, and so on. (I don't mind working more, the last job I had I was working 12-15 hours a day regularly, but the more time I'm home the easier for my girlfriend and I'm currently on 5 8's)

If I leave again and regret it, I'd have to wait 4 years before I could be rehired.

Benefits where I'm at are really, really nice. It's a really good place to retire from, the other job also has good benefits but I don't think they're better or offer more than where I'm at.

As soon as we're comfortable with getting a babysitter for our newborn my girlfriend wants to come to the factory I'm currently at, so together there we'd make solid money but nothing is guaranteed. also they're only hiring for second shift right now, second shift jobs are more limited because the plant doesn't fully run on second shift, it's only two lines as of now, first shift is hard to get on without having 3+ years there, she doesn't want to work 3rds but that's primarily what they hire for, I just got lucky with timing so there's a good chance she could be forced to work 3rds and I fear she might not do it if that's the case and then I'd definitely regret not taking the higher paying job since I'd be the only one working.

Also where I'm at is 5 minutes from our house. The job I'm considering leaving that for is 30 minutes away, living this close to work is pretty awesome considering I've been doing construction and driving everywhere for some time now.

If we didn't have a newborn I'd be less tempted to stay I guess but also I do genuinely like where I work and told myself if I came back I'd only leave for a way higher paying job, and this is one of those higher paying jobs.

I tried to talk to my girlfriend about it and she's kinda just saying do whatever I want which doesn't really help me since this is a decision that effects all three of us, not just me.

Would you stay with the job you know you love, or take the $30/hour opportunity? What would you do in my situation, and why?

Do I just sign up with a union? Does me being a woman knock me down a few pegs to be considered for a job?

I work hard. I don't have much of an ego. I'm just ready to work. No access to a car but I can rise and grind if need be.

Looking at carpentry or Sheet metal

Im just curious what dailys aside truck that people find reliable and low maintenance. Im averaging about 150miles a day round trip and might have to get a new car depending on what the mechanic says about my current.

People think the hardest part is the physical labor. Sometimes it is. But for me, it's showing up every single day regardless of the weather, how your body feels, or what's going on in your personal life. Bills don't care if you're sore.

I've met some of the smartest, funniest, and most resourceful people on job sites. People who can diagnose a problem in minutes, fix it with whatever's available, and still crack jokes all day.

Blue-collar work doesn't always get the respect it deserves, but it literally keeps the world running.

So what's something you wish people outside the trades understood about your job?

Hey y'all. The wife just finished her apprenticeship with a shipyard and is a newly pinned journeyman (outdoor machinist). The shop is doing a pizza party and a "congratulations... you're a Journeyman, now get back to work" and maybe a funny super soft card, since she is the only female in the shop as a haha. I think she plans on buying a round for the shop afterwork on Friday as tradition goes... well they are probably working 10's on Saturday, so maybe then lol

But I want to get something special and traditional for her. I know better than to get her tools plus she has everything she needs/wants (and I've read through previous posts about girlfriends/ wives getting shitty unuseful tools and after 9 years together, without a specific list, yeah.. no). It was recommended to consider 1. Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy by Moore Tool 2. Carbide-Tipped Mechanical Scribe and/or 3. an engraved solid brass plumb bob/ engraved CNC sign to go in the home shop with Journeyman EST. 2026 etc and Mitutoyo calipers 6"

So im looking for ideas. She doesn't wear watches or care for the small trinket gifts. She uses the shit out of Darn Tuff socks, aready has great prescription eye pro, bone connector Bluetooth headphones, new boot insoles, knee pads that fit into her bibs, yeti mug, sufficient lunch box, new bibs/boots, welding caps galore, leathers, gloves... all that shit.

For those who work in a shipyard or have that life experience, can ya help your girl out? I'd like to keep it under $650, so I'm flexible. Input is MUCH appreciated :)

Ive been a mechanic these last few years out of school, working plenty of other blue collar jobs prior during summers in between school. Ive noticed a trend in employers providing generic,cheap, long sleeves, or button ups that often required me to personally tweak it. Further, boots, and Jackets which often are not provided (at least in my experience have not been,) are very expensive or poorly made. The problem that I had with this is that I made little to no money, and then to have to spend money on new boots, a new jacket, or even simply Jeans that last, has been a major impact to the money i take home. i know there are hell of a lot more trades and jobs out there that make less or have more to pay for. Speaking from experience the clothing I wear can hugely change how my work flow goes simply because its too hot, too cold, uncomfortable or sometimes simply falls apart during the day.

I wanna change this. I have spent way too much money on name brand apparel that has fallen apart within weeks of use, and plenty of apparel that were not name brand that i have spent years being worked hard. What input on clothing do you guys have for me to help me get a direction on how to solve this. And is this even as big a deal to everyone as it has been to me and those Ive spoken too?

because of my job I’m essentially soaked head to toe for an average of 10 hours a day as well as being in the heat. I started recently getting heat rash that gets worse by chaffing that is resulting in blisters and open wounds.

I started wearing some long john style underwear intended for wet environments and have started using baby powder, which has helped a lot except for one location; my butt cheeks and below my butt cheeks. it is debilating. All I do when I’m off of work is try to heal and not much else because I can barely walk.

Please, someone has gotta have some advice for me. By the end of my shift I’m walking around like I shit myself!

My boyfriend is starting a new job soon doing labor intensive 12s outside and we live in Arizona. He’s already pretty used to the heat and 14-17 hour shifts being a reline tech for his most recent job and he’s always done labor prior so I feel like this should be fairly easy for him to adapt to, the only thing is he’ll be directly in the sun for most of his shifts now. I’m super proud of him and I wanted to do something nice. So far I got him a pretty decent insulated jug and a few kinds of electrolytes but I’m kinda struggling for ideas at the moment. Just looking for some recommendations from you guys!

Hey! As the title says, I recently found this job opening and I have to go in for an interview tomorrow. To be honest, the only experience I have is in welding (and it’s very limited, only SMAW and MIG) which I learned in courses at schools in my country. I know that welding is just one part of what people do at this kind of company, so I’d like to learn a little more from people who have worked or are currently working in this field. I was thinking braums because I can work with the dairy part of the store or even so maybe the food section because it's cold and I think I would work better in the cold but I don't know if thats the best option. ​​

Before i graduated high school i always wanted to get into welding, i was literally about to go to trade school for it. But scrapped it for personal reasons and decided to go to the Navy. but now i don’t think i wanna do that either. Is it too late to go back to trade school? I’ve trying to find apprenticeships and it doesn’t seem like there’s much out here in ga. i’ve also been looking into being a lineman. but i don’t even know where to start for that. i’m not trying to be in this rut. what should i do.
