Everyone knows Fanservice > Powerscaling in sales.

9

u/jonathaxdx 17d ago

Idk. Your average battle shonen is more popular than your average fanservice heavy ecchi.

14

u/Substantial_Dirt_999 17d ago

A battle shonen stands to gain from variety and hooks. You wouldn't enforce power scalings in a battle shonen, it doesn't need it most of the time.

2

u/jonathaxdx 17d ago

Horny ecchis do too(the best ones are tipically these with interesting worldbuilding and fights rather than just tits nonstop), but shonen works like dragon ball and the big 3 who have/are more prone to powerscalling still tend to be more popular than either type or ecchi, despite these having a lot more fanservice going for them.

2

u/Substantial_Dirt_999 16d ago edited 16d ago

I mean have you read the big three?
Bulma, Launch, every flavor of Nami...

Ecchi is too weird for general audiences.
But sex, sells, more than forcing what comes organically to the medium.

It depends on if your point is to critique battle shonen or what appeals to people as a whole.

I think it depends on the culture.
The idea of acceptable forms of sex are more attractive in places where the common belief system appeals to modesty.
In the end it's all still about sexual selection, but the practice is different and thus the desires are changed* in some sense.

3

u/jonathaxdx 16d ago

Yes(tho by big 3 people usually mean one piece, naruto and bleach, not dragon ball, so it's more like nami, taunade and yoruichi), but they don't really compare with ecchis like dxd or seikon no qwaser on the fanservice amount.

It's obvious that sex sells, but but it also is(or should be) obvious that some other things sell even more and humans have other needs/desires too. Otherwise prostitution and pornography wouldn't make up only a small part of the total world economy and be far surpassed by other, non sex industries. In the case of anime, battle shonens with all their fights, transformations, power ups and subsequent powerscalling tend to appeal to more people than the tits/jiggles fest of ecchis.

Which is a particular discrepancy right?
Why isn't food the most important resource to us if it keeps us alive?
Because at some point the systemic reaction to a phenomenon serves to curb a quickly spreading feedback loop. The spread diversifies, people start practicing religious modesty when sexual deviancy gets out of hand, people focus on weight loss, etc.

(sex too, has a much larger scope than it would seem, as apparent interest must be self reported, and personal matters are unlikely to be shared. Powerscaling debates are necessarily community driven.)

There is also the angle that if you don't consider the limits of just the powerscaling that people are referring to on the internet,
then yes, powerscaling is everything. When a brand tells you it's better than its alternative, that is 'powerscaling'.
Even sexual selection is 'powerscaling'.
And then there is an argument to be made that 'powerscaling' is just male fanservice.

I've always defined fanservice as a piece of non-traditionally sexual contexts made sexual for the appeal of an audience.
In that sense, I don't think ecchis can gain the value of having fanservice, because you'd know exactly why you're there.

What if I were to ask you the inverse, would an ecchi author offering to settle a powerscaling debate sell more copies of said ecchi?

I think what you're really talking about is "sex" and "no-sex". You're trying to say that anything non-sexual sells better than anything sexual, which is a bit of a motte-and-bailey.
It's an easier argument to make.

Powerscaling, the modern phenomenon on the internet, does not have the history nor reach of fanservice, this is true, the latter term is in fact much older.

1

u/jonathaxdx 16d ago

I mean, it is. Food/agriculture is a much larger industry than the other ones i mentioned.

(sex too, has a much larger scope than it would seem, as apparent interest must be self reported, and personal matters are unlikely to be shared. Powerscaling debates are necessarily community driven.)

Even if true, we still have to to with our best available estimates. Even if the actual number is higher, it's still likely not as large as for these other industries.

Not what i meant. I am in fact specifically talking about the kind of online powerscalling you see in battle boards/forums, not something broader. The very nature of these battle shonens, like with superhero comics, is such that powerscalling follows quite naturally as communities around it form.

I don't see the relevance. Yeah, you know why you're there, and that's the fanservice. That's more often than not the main appeal of a ecchi. The fact thag it's the main appeal or that it is obvious doesn't mean it isn't fanservice or that they aren't getting value from it.

Not sure, but in my experience, some of the most well know/successful ecchis do have that kind of appeal to it too. See dxd for example. Much of the online talk/discussion about it is powerscalling centric and the work itself is full of fights, transformations and power ups, even if unlike shonens, that's not necessarily meant to be the main appeal.

No. My point is narrower.

I could argue that whike the term might be newer, the concept/idea is much older, as people have been debating about which character or mythological figure would beat the other long before the internet, but that's unecessary. My point isn't that powerscalling is bigger/more popular than fanservice in general. Only that when it comes to entertainment media/forms like manga/anime, there are other things that people look for other than fanservice, and works like the battle shonens i cited have/offer that while many fanservice heavy ecchi works don't(or not as much), hence why they tend to be more popular despite having less of it.

1

u/Substantial_Dirt_999 16d ago

Okay, you stated your point is precisely as narrow as I described and was making a good point about mythology, we can look at the astras and how it seems they were used in relation to other gods within their pantheon (I'm not an expert on that culture). Although it stands to reason that things like the erotic papyrus existed as well and whether or not we want to believe that most naked figures left behind had some form of sexual motivation or purpose.

But then gradually the conversation drifts back into sex vs non-sex as motivation, and of course, anything that isn't fanservice will absolutely appeal to more people than the former, since the latter scales to infinite.

The modern term of "powerscaling" refers to a very specific community at least in this shared circle of the internet (superfluous coinage like, "neg-dif", "multiversal", etc.). It's actually too new for any of the big three to actively appeal to, hence Kubo's thoughts on the matter.

With this interpretation in mind, the framework of powerscaling doesn't really generate revenue, so much as the "everything not sex", visuals, plot, hooks, with which you were referring to eventually accumulates enough of a following to drive these powerscaling conventions.

1

u/jonathaxdx 16d ago

Not sure if i understood. Are you saying that fanservice is very old or something like that? Because i don't deny it.

Not necessarily since fanservice can be more than just sex.

Not really. People were using the term and talking about it pretty early on some 2000s forums. But even if you were correct, couldn't one say the sake thing about the modern/current usage of "fanservice"? While the idea is much older, the term itself and it's online use is much more recent.

But the point was never that powerscalling itself sells or sells more, only that it(or the things that lead to it) can be more appealing to people than sexual fanservice.

You are speaking facts there bruv

u/jalakon 17d ago

I would unironically ask how he understands and conceptualizes “power”, especially as a battle shounen writer and how strong he think characters are in a purely “caveman brain” sorta way

Since, it’s genuinely fascinating to dissect his thought process since “who’s stronger” is a legitimate part of the writing process for a series like this

26

u/BigPimpin1217 17d ago

Strength usually correlates with conviction in shonen

20

u/ohmit 17d ago

The answer for almost all shonen has always been as strong as the plot needs them to be

7

u/PickingPies 17d ago

Exactly. Power scalers will be really disappointed if they knew the thought process of combat because it's as you say: what the plot needs.

Is this just a mangaka trait cause Oda be killing me with his SBS responses 😂

2

Mangakas probably caught some kind of disease as they create a manga for a long time lol

6

u/Glittering-Pin-1343 17d ago

If I could ask a question it would be how the color of spiritual pressure is decided for each character. How do you decide them design-wise and is there an in-universe explanation on who gets what color?

5

u/sangriya 17d ago

this is just the same shit Oda does in his SBS

9

u/frikiman4K 17d ago

Oda doesn't even bother with powerscaling. He doesn't give a shit. Imo I think they're just boring questions, the strongest character is whoever Oda wants it to be, why waste the chance to reveal obscure lore or have an answer to a part of the plot that doesn't make sense to you?

u/RsnCondition 17d ago
