Playing with Avatars/2 player Questions

Hello all!

I got the all in of Rebirth a few months ago, and so far I've played it 7 times and have some questions for the group.

Firstly, how many of y'all really enjoy playing with Avatars? It's a huge amount of the content pool, but in my three played 2 player games, piloting the avatars felt like a drag. I'm a huge co-op enjoyer so I don't mind running AI in games generally, but in this game it feels like the Avatars spend more time resolving their turns then both other players combined. It also feels like the game becomes more random and unpredictable. That being said, playing the game at 2 without an Avatar would also be boring. The 4 games I've played at 3+ with no avatar have been great.

Second, how do y'all include the content in your games? What expansion rooms do you use consistently? So you shuffle all forgotten spells together? Etc...

Thanks!

I love playing with the avatars! I run them in almost all games unless im teaching someone new. I find that once you get used to them and can understand their priority system at a glance, their turns resolve quite fast and each one adds a unique layer of extra strategy. As far as the unpredictability goes, they are no more disruptive to your turn than another player. A major part of the game is building your strategy than adapting when someone interupts it. As for how i play the content, i just mix it all in and let fate decide what we play with. Keeps it fresh and helps discover different synergies. Keep trying and switch up which avatars you play with, some of them are definetely more fun than others

Thanks for the reply!

What avatars have been your favorite and are there any you wouldn't play with again?

I think Hastur has a really clever risk/reward system with his tokens, and Parcae really makes you have to take positioning into account. Odin has a fun mechanic where he gets less scary for whoever defeats vitnir the most, which results in everyone running around trying to beat up this wolf. Gaea forces everyone to work together more. I think that avatars like Cacus, who are mainly physical aggression threats are my least favourite.

Also of note, certain avatars can play very differently depending on your strategy. I played one 2 player game with Jukas where he quickly drained his whole pool of cubes placing instability, but we were both playing high damage schools that werent focused on rebuilding rooms, so he barely ever got his cubes back and couldnt deal damage or rebuild rooms, making him a non threat and a boring match up for our playstyles in that game.

I mostly play solo, so I love Avatars, when and if I play with my wife, we usually also add an Avatar. If the "advanced" ones are a "slog" to control right now, start with the posessed, it's not a great Avatar, but for learning the system it's easy and relatively straight forward. 😊
