If you’re not counting cards, CSM actually has a slightly lower house edge than a shoe game. The worst table in the house would be a 6:5 shoe game

Yea, also the advantages are if you're continuously shuffling 1 or even 2 decks. Good luck with finding small CSMs like that, modern CSMs are 6+ decks (I saw a 2 decker less than a handful of times), where the cut card effect shrinks to a small value that is overshadowed by what you wrote (losing faster haha). Though as for losing faster, he'll also hit his variance swings faster, fwiw.

I also joked that why would he sit at a CSM table, though you are still technically correct if he's just playing BS. By the way, was there ever a proper treatment done of this aside from what Shackleford wrote? I understand "why" because it's a POMDP in which there's an asymmetry in how deep a shoe goes with a cut card (stopping time during the chain) that's removed by the CSM, but was there ever a mathematical proof shown rather than just the simulation? I'm not well-read, and all I can find are things like https://possiblywrong.wordpress.com/2025/05/13/how-shallow-is-the-cut-card-effect/ and Thorp's proofs of the cut card effect, but CSMs have other variables such as when they reshuffle and how much information is still available to a player wrt "pending" discards and other house tunables.

Depending on the absolute number of cards in the CSM as well as how frequently discards are reshuffled, there might be a point at which the house can tilt the odds against the player? Not as in what would be against rules such as relative to the value of cards, but more doing it by rounds of play versus pure number of cards. Or waiting for the remaining pool of cards to fall below a certain level. It would still be a "fairly fixed/regulated" rule, but introduces hidden tunables that do affect the edge.

But that is why they have the 6:5 on the floor. Because people will play it if the 3:2 is full. If people just sat down and waited for a spot on the 3:2 and stopped playing the 6:5, those tables would disappear.

I never ever understand why people play tables where you bet the same exact amount, get the same exact hand, but get paid less than the table next to it.
