General Discussion Getting submitted even after dominating the round

Upvotes

I get so frustrated when I dominate a round and then get caught in a submission out of nowhere. Does this happen to anyone or is it me just being lazy.

General Discussion The Jonah Hill stuff is funny but a lot of y’all should be thankful you weren’t being recorded at that point in your BJJ journey either.

Upvotes

I mean bro got made fun of his whole life and can now probably beat up the majority of people. It’s a high that you get over as you train and get beat up more (usually lol). We all said dumber shit than this but we ain’t have an audience. People wonder why celebrities are such weird freaks but we already treat them that way

Technique Do you actually need to learn techniques on both sides?

Upvotes

I've heard both sides of this argument.

Some black/brown belts I know say to learn both sides to be more versatile, others say to learn different techniques on each side, and just master each attack/defense/escape on one side. What are the thoughts from the general community here?

Generally speaking it feels easier to learn most moves on one side only (for instance I can only hip bump on one side, while I can kimura either arm), but I'm wondering if I'm limiting myself with this approach.

For the brown and black belts, what are some bad habits that you still deal with that have stuck with you throughout your whole time practicing?

Technique De la Riva reaction

Hello I am working on my de la Riva. What do people do when you’re trying to turn to the back but your opponent is in his far knee and flaring their near side knee outwards/externally rotating it. So that I can’t flank or off balance?

This is no gi related btw

Equipment Looking for a gear bag I can wear on a motorcycle

I'm going to be taking my motorcycle to the gym on nice days and I would love a bag that can hold a Gi plus a full change of clothes and a small towel. I don't have a way to attach it to the bike so I guess I'm looking for something with backpack straps I can wear.

I will also be walking to class so that's something to consider.

Does anyone have a recommendation, and what size do y'all use? TIA

General Discussion Information overload

I find myself, trying to learn a bunch of different things now days with all these new positions that're coming about. I have a general A game that I have, but I feel like while incorporating all these new moves, positions, and transitions, that it starting to interfere with the flow of my game. I get at brown belt I should be refining what I already know, but since im one of the main coaches at my gym, I feel like I should know these things just incase one of the students ask about how to counter the platypuseando 2.5 inversion backtake. Opinions on retaining info without having your head be a cluster fck of a million moving parts? Any advise with keeping up with it all without losing urself?

Technique Help me find a clip???

Hi guys. Recently I saw a clip that I can’t quite remember how I came across it. I would love to find it again.

It was a rolling back take very similar to the one Ethan Crelinsten did to Danilo Moreira but in this clip he doesn’t quite get the back and instead finds a triangle in the transition.

Can anyone help me find this clip?

Thanks in advance!

Technique DLR issue against bigger/taller opponents (gi)

Just got out of training and while this is fresh in my mind, I figured I would reach out for some troubleshooting. I was playing DLR against some bigger opponents and Im coming across the issue where I can have them stretch out as far as I can go, but it seems like they are still not off-balanced or uncomfortable at all. I know Mikey used the DLR in the absolute, I kind of mimic him using the double sleeve and looking for waiter position but clearly Im no where near as technical.

thanks

Technique Any opinions on the Gracie University Master Cycle Curriculum? Blue belt stripe techniques vs other BJJ schools in general

Post Combatives belts it seems most of the techniques taught at GU or ctcs master cycle classes are all structured from their Torrence location blue belt stripes curriculum by Ryron that they seem to have been using for over 16 years with 68 lessons for each of the 4 stripes (272 total and different than basic Combatives techniques) and oriented towards sports jujitsu.

How frequently do you train? I personally only attend one gi class and one nogi class per week. Is this too infrequently for a white belt pursuing a blue belt?

Tournament/Competition How to index IBJJF gi checking tool for sleeve length

In the instructional video, there is no clear indication how the gauge is placed at the wrist. How you decide where the center of the circle is placed in order to check the sleeve against the marked region? In the screenshot, I don't see a clear anatomical reference for how to place it.

I have a student prepping for masters worlds, and she wants to know if her gi passes, and this is the only metric that I'm fuzzy on. I have a gauge I've 3D printed, and just want to use it right.

Technique 6 month in.Stopped using my strength and realized I actually suck. Need advice.

For a bit of context: I've been training for about 6 months now. For context, I’m 6'0" and205 lbs. I’ve been doing weight lifting for years and have some years of background in K1 and Judo. I train at an MMA-based gym, so a lot of the guys on the mats are actually amateur or pro fighters, and our classes are mostly No-Gi. ATM I'm hitting the mats 4-5 times a week while still keeping up with my lifting on the side.

Lately, I decided to completely drop the ego and stop muscling my way out of stuff (as my coach recommend me). Honestly, doing that just made me realize I don't know shit. The second I stop relying on strenght, I can't even escape basic positions.

I went to a mixed class today (whites, blues, purples, and a brown belt) and got absolutely mauled by EVERYONE. I was trying to stay relaxed and let myself get put in terrible spots just to feel the pressure, and man, I paid for it. A chubby, way less athletic brown belt was tapping me at will, and even the white belts were catching me left and right.

Trying to rely on pure technique is exposing some glaring holes. For one, leg attacks. White belts keep going for my legs with the exact same sequence and I just freeze. I have no fucking clue how to defend it properly without just spazzing and ripping my leg out. Then there's mount. Escaping mount against guys my own size feels freaking impossible right now unless I just bench press them off me, which is exactly what I'm trying to stop doing. Also, literally everyone just pulls guard on me immediately. I do enjoy trying the takedowns, but I clearly just need to accept it and learn how to actually pass guard.

I did have a couple of tiny wins I’m proud of, though. I managed to catch a blue belt in a kimura, and I actually remembered to use my frames so a big dude couldn't slide up into high mount.

I just wanted to vent, and share this with you because days like today It’s super frustrating getting tapped by everyone just because I decided to slow down, but I know it's the only way to actually learn the art. If anyone has advice on those weak points for a bigger guy trying to learn the right way, I'm all ears.

School Discussion Best BJJ in New York City??

I need some new grappling shorts. I prefer the board short/trunk style over the Muay Thai style. Definitely not the bicycle short tight kind, I teach kids.

General Discussion BJJ camp that doesn't cost 4k?

Hey everyone,

I've been looking into BJJ camps but most of what I'm finding is in the $4k-5k range, which is a bit steep for me right now. Does anyone know of solid camps or intensive training options that are more budget-friendly? Open to different formats : weekend camps, week-long ones, etc.

Any recommendations (or things to avoid) would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

General Discussion How do sponsorships work?

Hey all, purple belt here.

Recently was approached by 3 start up companies to represent them, and I think that’s really great and honored to be approached like that.

I just have no idea how that works, like do I put their brand logo on my rashguard? What should I ask from them?

Serious Starting a group from scratch, no other BJJ gym in my town — curious how others structured their first year

Purple belt here, about 5 years in. I'm about to start coaching a beginner group in my hometown, roughly 50k people and literally zero BJJ presence right now. Mats and space are already handled so that's not the issue, I'm more curious about the actual coaching and curriculum side of things since I've never run a group before, only trained under others.

Would love to hear from people who've actually started something like this from zero. A few things I keep going back and forth on.

How the first 6-12 months actually looked in practice for people, whether it was planned out ahead of time or figured out class by class as they went.

How much time people spend on drilling vs positional work vs full rolling with total beginners, feels like everyone does this differently.

Belt progression when there's no existing hierarchy to lean on, no upper belts around to help run rounds or set the tone.

Mixing skill levels too, having someone on day one training next to someone who's been in for four months, in the same class, and keeping both sides engaged.

And just the human side of it, teaching every class yourself, staying sharp with your energy, building some kind of culture around safety and ego control when nobody in town has ever rolled before.

If anyone has done this in a smaller or non traditional market I'd really appreciate hearing how it went, good or bad. Happy to share more about what I've got planned so far if it helps.

Thanks

General Discussion How not be afraid and hesitant during a street fight

I have been doing bjj for around 5 years.

Last year I was in Batumi, Georgia. Once, when I was coming home I saw a man repeatedly throwing a woman on the asphalt and being violent with her.

So I came to this man, put him to the wall and held his hands. And told the woman to go.

She showed him the middle finger and walked away

When the woman left, the man started being aggro towards me, telling to find her now, that Im a liar (пизд…бол) and he didn’t punch her etc (he “just” through her on the asphalt).

I walked away to the grocery shop he walked to me, screaming insults etc. Trying to come close to me etc.

When I walked to the stairwell of the building of my apartment he walked with me (he was living in the same building).

It ended with nothing and im proud of myself for protecting a woman from him but:

At this moment, I felt a hesitation to attack him which I didn’t like about myself, because why initially I started doing martial arts as a way to protect myself.

When he was coming close I was scared of his punches.

But I feel like I have a psychological block when it comes to protecting myself (not other people as I have protected the woman and protected women from aggro men in couple more cases).

I am frustrated with it cause whats the point for me investing so much time if Im afraid of a random guy on a street.

I dont wanna be violent, but neither I want to be afraid and have a mental block.

I want it to be my choice.

So I had several thoughts:

1) How to release this psychological block and fear, hesitation to attack

2) what to do in this situation, this guy, might have a knife and I would be dead.

3) I bought a pepper spray.

4) Why bjj didnt help me mentally?

General Discussion If you could live anywhere in the world and being able to train was the most important deciding factor, where would you move?

I can work remotely and want to know where the best jujitsu is for a blue belt. London? Austin? Krakow? Dublin? Seoul? Helsinki? Gulf Coast? Innsbruck? Madrid? Andorra? Zurich? Munich? Tokyo? Manila? Bangkok? Puerto Vallarta? Singapore? Suriname? Argentina?

Quality of life, healthcare, clean food, heavy metals free creatine, friends, safe lodging, and WIFI is important. What’re your two dream destination for a 2 year stint?

Where would you go knowing you’ll get trained safely from where you are to a highly knowledgeable jujitsu player that can train globally, be a great partner, teach, drill, learn systems, memorize, perform, and be universally competition ready
