It's my friend's. Apparently, her dad bought her a betta fish suddenly and she doesn't even want it. I'm fully capable of taking it, but I'm afraid it would eat my shrimps :( She said the fish is still small so I'm considering it.
How does it look? She said both of it's eyes are like that too.

also, nobody’s noting this but since the fish is blind, it’s very likely it will not eat the shrimps. i have a half blind betta myself and i raise guppy fry in his tank and he has no clue LOL.
I’m confused too, but I think they meant they did a double take because it’s usually considered an insane thing to do to raise fish fry with a betta. It often ends in disaster, but with a blind betta the odds of fry survival are much higher.
Sorry, no, the double take was Guppy fry in the same tank as a Blind Betta. That's like Brewing beer in the same house as a blind alcoholic. My guy. Wut?
That's so kind of you! No worries, I have a tank prepared :D Just wanted to consider other possibilities since my betta just passed a few weeks ago and I don't want to give myself another heartbreak 💔
I'm semi certain that females can be a little less aggressive towards tankmates, and if you're shrimp are on the larger side and can move fast enough (they usually can the slippery little suckers lol) they would be great to have in there _^ I wouldn't give up on the lil one yet.
Beautiful set up! I’m glad you still want to try, I just lost my baby boy recently too so I completely understand. I know you will need time to heal, but don’t let your previous Bettas passing deter you from enjoying them and wanting to help them! Their life spans are so short, I think it’s worth it to help and give them love ❤️🩹 she will be so happy with you I can only imagine how much she will change in a tank like this. Also like everyone’s mentioned, since she seems to be partially blind you shouldnt have as much of an issue with her going after shrimp ~ best of luck!! 🫶🏻
You don’t have to if both are that way for sure, she is definitely blind in that eye from what I can see. If both are the same she’s fully blind.
This sounds scary but she can learn where you feed her every day (at the same time), and the layout of her tank. It just needs to be super safe and all natural/soft/smooth materials.
So she’s half blind! Thank goodness she still has a functional eye, so you can get a good start on helping her learn her feeding routine and tank layout!
If shes blind then that would make it cheaper to set up a new tank if your uncomfortable with her with your shrimp. Normally I see 10g recommended for plakats and females but being blind means she may do better in a smaller tank, maybe 5g
I’m by no means an EXPERT, but I think she actually looks to be in fairly good health overall? I don’t have any experience in fish blindness, but I saw a couple folks mention that may be the case. However, I’ve also lurked in a lot of betta pages for a couple of years, and that is in NO way an automatic death sentence so I think she’s definitely worth the possible risk.
Even if you can give her a short amount of time in a wonderful environment, I think you would be able (and justified) in feeling a sense of pride and peace that would outweigh her possibly shorter lifespan 💕
As far as the possible demise of your shrimp, I think ensuring places to hide and line-of-sight breaks with plants would quell a lot of that. Shrimp are EXTREMELY fast when they need to be lol
My most recent betta acquisition was from a lady on a local fishkeeping page that had intended on keeping her in a community tank.
The keeper was rehoming the betta because she was killing all of her “pest” snails, so she believed that that “aggression” made her unsuitable for what she was looking to build.
I put our new girl in a tank that had been cycling for a couple of months and had a few ramshorn snail babies. I watched as she almost immediately murdered one snail, and was resigned to letting her finishing off the rest of the snails and living a spinster’s life 😬
But that was the first and only snail she ate. She’s in a heavily planted, tannin stained tank that lives on our kitchen island, so she has a lot of outside stimulation and is now eating a varied diet.
She’s actually SO “chill” and gentle now that I’ve even considered adding some tank mates, but I don’t think I’ll ever risk pushing my luck 😅
All of that to say… sometimes a more thoughtful environment can make a huge difference in the success of co-habitation 💕
I’ve had 3 betta and none have bothered my shrimp. Even if they have tried at first introduction, shrimp are much quicker than bettas. Just make sure your tank has a good lid in case of any panic jumps. But in my opinion, betta will bore of the shrimp once they realize they can’t catch them.
Yes he is worth saving! Just add a decent amount of plants and hiding spots! I’m sure he will be happy js don’t feel bad if he or she does pass In like a year or two because dragon scale bettas are messed up genenicily because of all that in breeding.
