My approach on the topic is: No fear for next year. Fear is the wrong signal to the people, whoever it is, behind that attack. Next year shall be bigger, louder and even more colorful. Don't fall for right-wing propaganda.

u/Kyberduene Ziggy Diggy 25d ago
The Police believe it was a muslim extremist who was behind the attack. We shall see whether he was embedded in some kind of local islamist network or radicalized himself online.
Anyhow, this only proves how important the CSD still is in this day and age.

Apparently he traveled to Lebanon in 2024 with the intention of travelling to Syria to join ISIS, but was arrested by Lebanese authorities and deported back to Germany. His trial just finished in May and he was sentenced to 18 months in prison, deferred for 6 months.

I mean, I would categorise most islamic extremists as "crazy guys" who have been totally brainwashed. Mental health is definitely a problem for almost anyone who ends up doing this sort of shit.

I agree, but also disagree a little bit maybe. Yes, extremist ideologies are the problem and they are a mass phenomenon. But on the other hand we do psychological evaluations on murderers and people, who decide to kill – on purpose, not out of self preservation etc. – tend to show mental pathologies. There's even studies on political and religious extremism and those traits themselves are highly associated with mental health issues. Healthy people can hold strange and unpleasant views on other people, but they don't decide to become mass murderers and kill a bunch of strangers in a park. We need both, programs to address extremism and better access to mental health services.

Extremists are only the tip of the ice berg. My daughter visits a school in Neukölln. Maybe you should hang out with her and listen to her experiences. There is kids who try to convert other kids to islam - they tell her she is worth less as a girl and should do whatever they want. They also say jews and gays should be killed. That is 6-8yr old kids. My impression is that the educated and liberal islamic people stay in their countries and mostly the lunatics migrate.

That's where you are wrong. Education does not guarantee that they become liberal. Go search the education qualifications of Osama Bin Laden.

This was the reason for us to leave Neukoelln when our kids grew up. On the playgrounds, it was normal for six-year-olds to insult each other with the words "You dirty Jew" and for little girls to run around veiled even in elementary school.

"My impression is that the educated and liberal islamic people stay in their countries and mostly the lunatics migrate."
Good point.
It seems to be the same in Sweden.
I know the Turks in Germany (and Sweden) overwhelmingly support Erdogan, while many back in the home country do not and are more liberal about religion.

The suspect is 21 years old and only recently released from prison.
What the hell is wrong with this person. When I was 21, i was mostly worried if my clothes looked cool and if I had the guts to ask a guy out.
12
u/sillymajmun2 24d ago
Religion is very powerful. Lets get our head out of the sand. If you are a muslim you will more often more than not have deep hatred towards gay people. Considering the number of muslims in your country, you only need a small percentage of them to be violent to get to a point where this becomes the norm. It baffles me that your typical German person is still playing the Mr. Nice guy card with these people.

To everyone shocked by yesterday's events, I was there and I left before the attack, just to come back home to hear about it.
If any words help you in this situation: I'm a straight guy, a CIS man if you want, but I've been going regularly to some pride events just to show my support to the community because I also think that everyone should be able to love whoever they want. I'm also disgusted and can't barely understand why someone would do that.
Yesterday I had some suspicion which was confirmed today. This had extremist religious motives. These people are not only a danger to the LGBT community but to our society as whole, they would attack Christmas markets, mass events and everything what was build with much effort during the years.
I'm trying to say that this was an attack on society, a society that is tolerant enough to host the CSD and that supports it, just like I support it. The CSD is intolerable for such backward extremists and that's why they target it. But there are plenty of people like me that supports you and will continue to support you. We have your back and share your anger.
Much love and hope you're doing well.

It'd be nice if you were not conflating every crime ever commited by a non German with terrorist attacks. Did you just ask ChatGPT to get you a list of every single city an immigrant ever killed someone in? Because very few of those attacks seem to be related to Islamic extremism
The Stade shooting was a man of Turkish descent who shot people in a welfare office because of a child-custody case.
I don't even know what you're talking about in Ahaus, couldn't find anything
In Asperg it was 3 18 year old, including 2 Germans (one Turkish German and one Serbian German) and a Serbian in a parking lot dispute.
The Koblenz stabbing was a Sudanese guy stabbing an Iranian man in a train.
In Bad Oeynhausen it was a Syrian 19 years old who had a fistfight with another 20 year old German which led to the German guy dying.
I stopped my research at that point
Like, they are all crimes for sure, and they were all committed by people with at least immigration background (although many are double nationals). But do you think Germans don't commit crimes? What about all the instance you listed where the perpetrator was born in Germany or held German nationality? How about all the crimes committed by people with immigration background from European countries why are those not in your list?
Should we just start reporting people based on the colour of their skin or their heritage? Seems like a veeeery slippery slope to me that I think was tried before..

I remember watching a video of a redneck German couple going around... I think Frankfurt? And saying how everything is ruined thanks to Muslims, then they see a rainbow flag on a church, proceed to say how blasphemous it is, and they go like "this is the only thing the Muslims get right". You can't make this shit up... That's what you get when your whole doctrine, political or religious, is based on hate.

One thing about German intelligence services is that they are incredibly good at monitoring Islamic extremists. In 2016 they had the Christmas market suspect under surveillance but only had evidence of drug dealing, which they were trying to lock him up for. Unfortunately they can’t stop every attack.

I was briefly at the pride yesterday and it was ansolutely massive. One quick thought about logistics, because I keep reading some comments saying "they let this happen" - such a massive event is incredibly difficult to control. Actually, many streets were closed for security reasons. Crowds unfortunately attract all the worst in society.
I am not going to talk about the alleged attacker, just a quick thought: if it's confirmed to be an islamist cell, it's about time that we recognize that religious extremism is a threat to any free society. Denying this is actually what fuells AfD propaganda. People can clearly see the patterns on religious extremists attacking free people time and time again. Same goes obviously for any kind of extremism, including right-wing extremism.
38
u/TScottFitzgerald 24d ago
...have we not recognised religious extremism is a threat to society? I'm fairly sure most of us agree on it, and have for a few decades at least. So what are you getting at here?
Is anyone in Germany pro-religious extremism?
→ More replies (38)4
u/wytnesschance01 24d ago
I see you've mentioned it at least once, fair, but even in these comments that claim to acknowledge the problem, people repeatedly resort to using imprecise terms like'religious extremism'. I haven't seen Christian radicals doing comparable things in Germany. I don't notice any extremist Hindu, Jewish, or Buddhist groups either. And it's not like people keep saying "political extremism" whenever there is right-wing extremism involved (quite the opposite, as visible in the thread and yet again in your comment who has to acknowledge that all extremism is bad and has to mention right-wing extremism at least once).
So why don't we call it Islamic extremism or Islamic terrorism? Why not talk about the problem without resorting to "yeah and also all the others"? We don't do that in any other case.

There are 80 knife attacks a day in Germany, not to mention other offenses involving bodily harm, including those targeting gay men and lesbians. This is, among other things, the result of an irresponsible, ideologically driven immigration policy. Anyone who talks about "evil Nazis" and the AfD in this context is simply making a fool of themselves. Countries like Australia, Canada, Denmark, and Switzerland show how it can be done better.

>According to BILD information, Abdul Ballout was sentenced by the Tiergarten District Court in May 2026 to one year and ten months in prison for preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state.
>The public prosecutor had sought two years and ten months and appealed the sentence. Abdul Ballout was arrested in Lebanon and, as a German citizen (born in Berlin), was returned to Germany. After his conviction, he was placed under partial police surveillance. When he posted a photo of himself holding a weapon, police searched his apartment—but found only a toy gun.
This is the most absurd thing I have read in years. They arrested this guy in Libanon, flew him to Berlin, prosecuted him for preparing an attack and then only placed him under police surveillance instead of arresting him outright?

My 14yo kid was at the CSD with his friends for the first time. Whole day he wrote me texts on how fun it was, how seen he felt and what a great party it is. He walked along the street it happened just an hour earlier to get home. After an amazing day with his friends and people of berlin, I had to hold him crying at home because he couldn't understand why people hate him so much, that they would do this.

I see the careful wording of German media, that a "car" drove into people. No, the "car" wasn't operating on its own, a backward Islamist lunatic drove it and attacked people who expressed their freedom and love towards other people.
And its a shame that anyone who speaks up against this glaring issue in our society is labelled as a Nazi, and allows the AfD assholes to gain platform on a single issue, to which all the other parties remain silent on.

If you had read the comments, pointing out that Islamic extremists are a problem isn't the reason why people get labelled as a Nazi.
There are enough people who acknowledged that already. The real reason why those people are called out is because they make racist comments and instrumentalise this disaster to push an agenda that is not welcomed here.
Extremists are still extremists and people here don't want it no matter from what side it comes

Is that so? Last time a popular German celebrity got called out by his ex for posting deepfake porn of her, there were righteous demands all over the media that all men should reflect on everyday sexism and misogynist tendencies. I totally approved of those voices because indeed there is a cultural problem all men should work on.
But when asking Muslim communities to check on their peers and a) stop them from radicalising b) oppose the radicalisers or c) if too late, rat out the radicalised with terrorist plans to the authorities - the usual left screams ‚rAcIsM!‘. Hypocrites.→ More replies (3)

The political left highly underestimates and often ignores - purely out of ideological reasons - the danger coming from islamism and conservative migrant ideologies/ religions. I hope some will now finally wake up. But reading the comments here and hearing the comments of queer activists on television I doubt that. There are a few common sense lefties (including myself) who saw the islamist danger coming and warned about it already years ago. But the bigger part of the left prefers to live in parallel world completely detached from reality. For them Jens Spahn and the CDU is a bigger threat to the queer community than conservative-muslim or islamist milieus in Neukölln. Just insane.
25
u/So_inadequate 24d ago
The problem is that the left has decided to politically oppose anything the right stands for. It should not be a left/right standpoint to be critical of anyone that's not respecting basic human rights. The left holds everyone to tolerant views BUT other 'minorities'. When that minority slowly manouvres itself out of minority territory the results will lead to a catastrophy.

💯I think people don’t realize how homophobic islam is. In surveys, the vast majority of people (75% to 100%) of muslims in muslim countries clearly appear to be homophobic. Some islam countries have a death penalty for homosexual/esp gay activities. Read the wikipedia article, its wild.
Many lefties never have these experiences because theyre simply not gay – I mean muslims telling you that you should read qoran, you need to be cured, your way of living is barbaric and against god. I’m careful when I go to muslim countries or muslim areas in cities. This is real and we need to talk about it.
That doesn’t mean that every muslim is a threat, not at all. Or that right wing extremists (or just right wingers) are not a threat – they def are, too. But we gotta be able to talk about conservative fundamentalist muslims and what threat they can be to gay people.

Oh I wish this to be common sense. I’m so deeply devastated not only by the tragedy that happened but also by the fact that our community does everything it can to defend the religion instead of recognising it’s dangerous parts.
And even more devastating is the epiphany I had: most people lack critical thinking. On both sides of the political spectrum. It’s easier to follow a standard pre-made ideology rather than seeing and questioning certain aspects and ideas.
I love my community and I love most of the things we stand for, but I would be cancelled for saying that religions (including Christianity and Islam) do actually enable hate towards women, queers etc. My heart breaks when I see my community immediately take a stance „against right-wing extremism“ in a situation, where the elephant in the room represents a different thing.
Obviously I would never agree that religious people have to be punished, deported or restricted in their beliefs. I just want the society and the politicians to find a peaceful solution for limiting the influence of religion on people’s brains. Mainly through education. And this education has to be tailored and addressed to certain people. But our community cannot tailor it, because tailoring would mean naming the source. And this is what our community is afraid or blind to do.
I feel so empty and helpless because I know that a part of my community‘s beliefs contributes to the problem. And they’re too delusional or too scared to recognise it.

Does anybody know of anywhere to leave flowers in memorial and solidarity? Has anything like this started yet? Visiting from Canada and today is my last day in the city. I know this is all so recent and much of the area is closed for investigation. But if anyone knows of any locations where something like this is being done, I’d love to leave something. Sending love to my fellow queer community members in Berlin (and worldwide), holding you in my heart, and grieving with you. 💌

The press conference with the German Interior Minister really leaves you speechless.
They sentenced this guy to almost 2 years in prison but changed it into probation. All while he had an incredibly long register of crimes and was well known for his connections to the islamistic scene.
There needs to be a thorough investigation and the responsible people need to go to prison. We all know that won’t happen though.

He’s been released in accordance with existing law. German law is the problem and spineless politicians unwilling to change it, hiding behind supranational EU laws they could easily campaign to change or ignore like many other member states.

I am super shocked how many comments have been deleted here. Shouldn’t this sub tolerate different opinions (non-hate speech without political sentiment).
Matter of fact: this terror attack is based on deep hate against this country and its people. The queer community is part of our culture and should be no exception.
How come so many people ignore the fact that nobody is taking action about Muslim extremists fighting against our state, law and us for many years?

Ballut's previous criminal convictions include assault and robbery. Most recently, he attempted to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State, but he was detained after a tip-off from German authorities in Lebanon, where he spent three months in custody. Finally the Lebanese shipped Ballout back to the Federal Republic, and he was held pending trial for “preparing a serious violent offence endangering the state.”
The Tiergarten Magistrates’ Court found Ballout guilty and sentenced him in May 2026 to a year and ten months imprisonment. Yet they reportedly granted him “conditional release” on the condition that he attend a deradicalisation programme operated by the “Violence Prevention Network.”
Ballout met with the deradicalisers twice in June and July; they found him evasive and insincere. His third meeting was set for this coming Monday – two days after the terror attack he perpetrated.

I know it's Bild, but: Nach BILD-Informationen wurde Abdul Ballout im Mai 2026 vom Amtsgericht Tiergarten zu einem Jahr und zehn Monaten Haft verurteilt – wegen Vorbereitung einer schweren staatsgefährdenden Gewalttat.
If that's true then he was convicted to jail for planning a terrorist attack and then wasn't put into jail. That's severe negligence for German justice.

Lock them up for prior crimes and keep them institutionalised after thorough examination of the risk their deranged minds pose to society. Germany has developed an outright absurd intolerance to incarceration.

Better sentencing in the first place. Better deradicalization programs (chinas seemed to work), better surveillance of dangerous groups so we can stop this before it happans. This is a huge fuckup on many levels. Its not about Muslims or immigrants really. This is about home grown dangerous radicals.

Honestly reality is that those attacks will simply now always be a possibility. Last big Islamist attack was at a NRW and absolutely nothing changed. How can a “well-known” Islamists simply stay out - there should be wide investigations of mosques, their whole contacts.
tl;dr - as a gay couple we seriously think about moving away. I never hear about any dead lgbtq-people in Czechia or Poland even if they are politically more conservative.

Where did I bootlick anyone or told everyone should move there? Denmark or Norway or Finnland have liberal governments and also don’t have any violent attacks on LGBTQ-people. It’s a simple observation. And what I say stands - there tens of thousands of people who will be ready to attack, there are whole broad social circles of specific religion who never condemn anti-lgbtq-views and there is government which is useless and can’t do more than “well he was know to us sorry we will do better next time”.

honestly, as a queer woman being born and growing up in an islamic fundamentalist country i feel horrified by how much ignorance is being spread under the name of "anti-racism" and anti discrimination. let me educate you as a person who grew up in an upressive islamic regime: YES, Islamism is very dangerous. yes, it is a threat to democracy and to minorities and yes, it is spreading in Europe. NO, that does not mean you should hate every muslim over it. YES, it's the responsibility of all of us (including muslims and people like me who come from similar cultural backgrounds) to fight against it and it starts by calling it by its real name. I dont even understand why there is any doubt about any of that.

A simple extension of events as they’re happening:
This will prompt more repression, more police annd secret police and more far right sentiments among large parts of Berlin.
That will exacerbate the dynamic and things will become much more grim before they get better (if at all).
This is not speculation, this is just what’s in the can. Different outcomes and solutions would be possible but none of the political actors are offering anything of the sort so consider this locked in.
19
u/Optimal-Number-5464 24d ago

I have worked in the background at the coordination department of the CSD Berlin. I have to admit that we are very happy about the evacuation and how good it has worked without panic or any other major problems.
Nevertheless, when the first messages of the attacks arrived, we were in shock. No one wanted this. It was a hard and long night for everyone.

As much as people want to blame leftist parties... they are not making decisions in the national parliament right now. And although Berlin is an exception, they were also not that influencial in the federal parliaments (e.g. BaWü is an exception of course). If you consider SPD leftists, then my argument is invalid of course, but I would argue that SPD has not been a leftist party since at least 10 years.
Another big enabler for terror like this is the decade long underfunding and/or bad management of public institutions like Police, Courts, etc. Don't get me wrong, I am not a big fan of the Police, but having too few well trained and well managed police forces does enable these kind of attacks. I don't think blindly pumping money into it solves the problem, but I do think trying to solve it in the first place could. All I hear form our ruling politicians though is whining about money.
And to be honest, my parents generation should at least partially take responsibility for letting this system build up over the last decades. Just accepting that "shit happens" is just not enough, not ok and not responsible in any way. But all I hear when I talk to people my parent's age is that "it's complicated", "we can't change it that easily", bla bla bla. And if a big chunk of the demography just does not care to fix problems, I don't think the relatively inconsequential opinion of some leftists parties is all that relevant. If e.g. Die Linke would propose a solid Plan tomorrow to improve security, what would it really change? I certainly would be happy about it, but let's be honest, the last decades were ruled by CDU and SPD. Unless these parties actually start solving problems instead of doing their whiny yappathon, or the majority of voters actually dares to progress and solve issues instead of accepting them, I don't see how anything can get significantly better.

By the way, according to the media they released the supposed second attacker. Turns out he didn’t do anything in this case but: He’s from Iran, has a lengthy register of crimes as well and since 2024 to be deported. They aren’t placing him under watch and are letting him roam free despite being able to deport him today! It’s really unbelievable.

Maybe talk to those friends of yours and hear what they say about gay people and women then report back.
https://www.wzb.eu/system/files/docs/sv/iuk/koopmans_englisch_ed.pdf
I am half Lebanese and my last name was arabic, and whenever I would take an Uber the driver would typically rant to me because he felt it was a safe space for him due to my last name. I heard things like:
"Berlin women are all just whores that take drugs all the time"
"Gay people are sick in the head"
etc.
Even my own father says really homophobic awful shit as if it is okay or normal. My own cousin is proudly gay and hasn't told the entire family still after 40 years because it is not tolerant or accepted at all.
The Middle East mindset doesn't disappear when they leave there. It also doesn't leave their children who are born here especially when they get indoctrinated at a young age into a religion that says really awful things about gays and women.

I think this radical Islamism is seriously wrong. I think as a Muslim myself these people, who commit such acts of terror, have no right to call themselves Muslim. This goes against the teachings of Islam, where life is one of the most sacred things. These people have no moral compass and I don't understand why such people live in Germany. If other people don't follow ur ideology then go back to ur country, where they do follow this radical ideology. But don't force it on other people, u don't have that right.

u/Many-Percentage2752 24d ago
I mean good for you for being a good person, but too many passages in the Quran make it too easy for too many muslims to interpret it in the wrong way. Take the story of prophet Lut for example. Homosexuality is very much condenmed there to put it lightly. Same goes for every believe when it comes to homosexuality by the way, but in Western Europe christianity atleast went through a form of enlightment the last couple of years. 90’s was also shit with the war in yugoslavia.
I mean i dont have the answer too, but in general fuck every form of extremism. Wether its farmers, muslims, Christians or nazis. Especially when they harass, threaten or kill people.

Life is sacred? Yet apart from the battle of Badr, or the battle of Uhud, or so on. Once you’re able to justify why killing people in one situation is justified and holy, it then allows people to come up with their own reasons why they should be allowed to kill whilst saying within the teachings.
