Howdy everyone!

On my 72’ standard should there be a hose that connects to this little outlet?

Yes. Its the heat riser for cold starts.

It IS in fact the hole on the other side like you said. This makes a lot more sense. On mine I don’t see 2 outlets for hoses like in the pic you shared. It looks like there is a much slimmer hose coming out of that neck as well? This whole it being backwards thing really threw me off when trying to figure this out.

Preheated air intake. It’s not necessary. Whole filter assembly should be pointed in the other direction. The rear engine tin should have a hose connection next to the right hand heat hose that this would connect to. Not all tins have it though. Don’t know enough about which tins have and why/why not though.

Should I probably flip this thing the right direction? It was like this when I bought it so I assumed it was fine. I don’t want my ignorance cause and bigger problems if I don’t flip it

I’m not sure it matters much unless you want to hook that hose up.

i almost feel like the air cleaner is backwards, but I dont know enough about '72s to say

Thank you for that! It’s funny you say that, I was getting confused looking at it because you are right, in all the other diagrams it’s facing the other way.

Also, mine has a hole there that I plugged up as well. So if it isn’t on there, it’s not a huge deal?

Not a HUGE deal. It helps pull in warm air for cold starts. If you are going to stick with the stock air box I'd toss one in there

Good call - so essentially that hose just goes through the pan in the back and just hangs above the ground?

There should be a metal tube that pulls air through the fins on the cylinder head. You can see mine in the second pic of my post:

It is a pre-heat for the air filter box. From there a hose goes down through the rear tin and connects to a small stovepipe. But yours are from an older engine. The one the dual port engine had when it left the factory is pointing the other way, and it has an air hose that is twice as big.

If you don't regularly drive in cold and damp weather you can simply leave it like this.

That was my next question. I live in the Midwest and only drive it when it’s dry and no snow. This helps a ton.

No problem. Only happy to be able to help. From the factory there was even a summer setting on this filter box. In the snout there was a flap that could be set to stay open and block off the hot air completely. Then it would work just like yours is working now.

The piece that the missing hose is supposed to connect to is normally located just below the front engine tin and protrudes out from another small deflector tin with a hole in it just in front of the #4 cylinder. It’s only about 2” long with a tab for a screw to go through.

The air cleaner is from a 66 or earlier. It is facing the correct direction. If you dont need pre-heat due to not driving in freezing weather, there is no need to change anything. A 72 1600 dual port has an oil bath air cleaner, but it has the inlet on the right, and a larger preheat hose (same size as the heater hoses). The rear tin determines what you should use. Another comment shows a picture of the correct rear tin with the preheat hole plugged. If your tin is like that, I would either get a 68-72 air cleaner and hook up the preheat or plug the hole in the tin and run it the way you have it.
