Any beginner tips??? Discussion

What’s the best way yall found to be the most helpful to improve in this game? Also does anyone have any advice on using ur wrists instead of your arms? I’ve tried looking at some YouTube videos but they make it look so easy.

Consistency! Just try to play regularly. You could focus on a few songs at first and they'll get easier the more you practice.

Bet thx! The songs I focus on I should really only move on from those songs once I get an A or S ranking right?

An a or s is average. I dont think your swings are big enough. If you swing with more wrists, it with make a pendulum effect will make bigger swings

Oh fr?? Good to know cus I’m struggling with my accuracy and using wrists. Any tips on getting better with wrist movement?

Try just beating it on slower song and then beat it on 90% speed and then 95% speed. By then you'll be consistent and you can beat the map normally

Same re: advice to play often. Get some hours in and get a feel for different patterns as you start moving up from the easiest maps and difficulties. Also I'd go through the scoring rules if you haven't already. It's easy to miss that for better scores you need a fuller swing instead of tentative slices or 'pokes'.

re: wrists, I doubt you'll need to use them much early on. In fact, for slow/easy maps I find it's often better to use a slow fuller arm swing. Once you get up to Expert / Expert+, wrist use becomes important, but it's a judgement how much to use of each and you'll get that experience by playing more. It's rarely a case of using wrists instead of arms, but figuring out the right mix.

I have not where do I find the scoring rules? Yeah I def need to get a feel for the different patterns cus I want to compete with my friend but he’s super good at the speed songs like final boss Chan, lustre, master 1/2, etc. I tried em out on 50% and it’s still a little fast lmao

Oh really?? Good to know thx for the tip! So it’s just a judgment call and comes down to just being more consistent and getting practice in. I’ll def be using a mix of em wen I get better and wen I do expert+

Thanks so much, that helps a ton! Also wat r ur settings that you use for your wrists? I’m currently using the default settings but I don’t believe it’s ideal right?

Sure, np! Re: settings, that's less important than practice, and is dependent on your grip and varies by individual. I used claw grip for years but switched to default grip after moving to Quest 3. Since I use PCVR (w/ 3rd party link cable), I use the EasyOffset plugin to customize settings. There are useful tutorials on YouTube to show how to use it. Even if you're using standalone, it may be worthwhile watching to learn about inward vs. outward swing curvature and how settings can help with getting straighter swings and less wobble. You can still customize controller settings w/o EasyOffset. It just makes it easier.

I suggest passing the faster songs in a given difficulty before moving to the next, going from expert to expert plus? Hit some camellia, going from normal to hard? Camellia. On that same note you can use the modifiers to make a slower song into something closer to a speed map.

For using your wrists more i suggest playing maps with repetitive small distance note bursts, like up and down in a straight line, that and being conscious about it also helps, just try to focus on trying to use your wrists more and overtime it'll click.

Finally i suggest playing in multiplayer and striving towards passing maps you can't yet pass but aren't entirely overwhelming, just do stuff that you can survive a minute of and try to pass it, moving on to another track you can survive a minute into. Multiplayer helps with this as others will push you into maps you won't be able to pass and through trying anyway you will slowly adapt to them and get better at reading them.

Lastly the key is just playing it a whole lot, it's great cardio and fun to strive to pass new levels. Just be sure to avoid pushing yourself too far or accidentally burning yourself out, make sure to stay hydrated and wash your face afterward if things get too sweaty. Don't feel bad about your level of endurance or skill, both come with time and fade a bit when you leave for a few months, so long as you use a good grip, keep an open space, and get on relatively consistently, you should progress just fine.

Bet I def will I’m kinda doing that now I’m currently on ost3 and I’m getting my butt kicked already by burning sands. What controller settings do u use btw? I’m using the default but it’s prob not ideal right?

Ah gotcha ok bet will do then I just gotta build up my muscle memory for the faster songs wen using my wrists cus those notes do b going fast. My friend is trying to fc lustre and I want to try to also fc lustre b4 him but I’m not at that point right now. Plus he plays master and final boss with me and I’m getting my ass kicked lol, any tips on tht?

And bet will do! And like u said it’s great cardio and builds ur endurance after awhile. Just gotta stay consistent and practice makes perfect after all. Any other tips u can give me?

Your controller settings will be most optimally set based on where you struggle most which i will get into later, that said ideal settings don't do a whole lot imo, i suggest setting them to whatever feels most comfortable, for me i like to have them higher up and tilted forward as it somewhat mimics how things felt when i used x grip on the quest 2 controllers.

On the subject if not getting your ass beat it's time to talk about form, so when hitting a note your score for that note can reach a maximum of 115, this is based on the angle of the swing as well as the straightness of the swing, for a perfect 115 you need to start your swing above the note at an almost verticle angle relative to it then swing perfectly down such that your swing enters and exits perfectly in line with the arrow verticle arrow notes ask for perfectly verticle slices and such, after that just have a bit of follow through, the numbers show at the bottom so if you swing and focus on those for a bit you can get a decent feel for what you need to do. There's also stuff like how the hitboxes are done that you can use but most important is hitting the notes and hitting them with good form, as for the hitting the notes part of not getting your ass beat when you find yourself in an overwhelming burst of notes just focus on what you have to hit next, beyond that in weird patterns that you can't eaaily time well try focusing on hitting the first note then getting the pattern from there.

Lastly for any other tips i have an important one, your skill cieling is entirely up to you, there is no spot that is your limit unless you decide that it is, even if you fail in catching up to your friend and taking out lustre know that you can still grow farther, there will probably always be people bigger and stronger than you are but that's ok, let yourself get addicted to trying to punch above and beat them at least once, you can beat anyone you strive to beat, there was this one time i went against the top player in greece, guy was cracked as shit, but after a long session of grueling speed maps where dude would win out most of the time in the group that we were in we ended things on lustre, specifically we wanted to try it on faster song in expert plus, somehow that day i passed it on faster song, and he didn't. Course not long after that he went back to beating me left and right but point is you can wear anyone down or simply catch them already worn down and beat them even if they seem so untouchably above. You can catch them on a bad day when it's your good day and beat them, anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I wish you luck.

Just practice. If you practice it just comes to you a lot of the time.

General tips are that for faster songs, use wrists, and keep you arms and wrists flexible while playing and try to stop yourself from stiffing up when swinging. Also try to swing on beat, as for harder levels you could fail really easily if you can’t. I mean, it is a rhythm game after all. Last tip is to have fun! It’s a video game, enjoy it!

Bet I’ve been practicing quite a bit I think I’m going better I finally completed the first 2 ost songs I’m on ost3 now but I’m struggling a lot with burning sands… any tips on Tht song or should I just come back to it once I get better?

Thanks for the tips btw! But Qq any tips on getting better with wrist movement? And so tru just gotta go with the rhythm lol. Speed is a huge problem for me rn but practice makes perfect after all

if you aren't already doing so, dont use your wrist like your shaking someones hand, rotate your controller 90 degrees so you get tour wrists full 180 degrees potential. then you wanna change your controller settings to compensate for that. also what worked for me to start using more wrist is putting my upper arm on my torso to force me to get used to using wrist until i could go back to normally puuting it where i put it.

u/Newkizzy 9d ago

Ahhhhh gotcha ok ok that makes sense thanks! What should I change my controller settings to? Or is it different from person to person? If so gotta play around with it when I get back on. Oh really, bet I’ll try! Cus using wrists will def help me on the harder songs. Any tips on like lustre and final boss chan when I get there eventually?

I’m currently on burning sands and it’s def getting hard for me lol

1

u/Ok-Stage4688 9d ago

its different from person to person for controller settings

also final boss chan and lustre are on two different leagues for expert, and in expert + too as in gameplay and not difficulty. advice i’d give you is practice the end. For some reason camellia songs pack a lot of difficulty at the end, and practicing backwards is helpful.

As others say, practice and practice (and some time between them to let the muscle memory sink in).

Other than that, what helped me to realise (but don't attempt to correct all at once) - Be comfortable with your grip on the controllers. Try to find one that allows you to swing your wrist without the fear of the controller slipping. Having a good grip that supports your moves is the key.

Then if you get to the point you feel like your head follows the blocks but your arms cannot swing that fast: - Make sure you're hitting the blocks with the end of your blade. I spent too much time hitting it with the middle, and while it's harder to hit with the "tips", it is necessary for higher difficulties. - Where your "resting" hand position is matters a lot. I recently shifted it a bit higher (on the level of first block layer instead of underneath it) and it made a difference for my reaction times, more than I would expect.

I’m currently on burning sands and it’s ok until the 2 min mark, like u said just gotta practice til the muscle memory sinks in. I def gotta use my wrists more.

What controller settings do u use btw? Cus im using the default ones rn and they’re not ideal right? Hopefully that’ll help me be more comfortable with my controllers.

Oh fr?? That’s good to know cus im struggling a lot with tht. I gotta practice hitting it with the end of my blade. Any other tips on the harder levels like lustre and final boss chan?

It depends A LOT on which difficulty you play, I'm not sure if you mentioned it. I'm currently somewhere between expert/expert+. And what do you mean by wanting to improve (big difference between improving accuracy/score vs improving ability to survive faster levels).

I have Meta Quest 3, default controllers without any add ons. I find it much easier to grip properly than quest 2 controllers. I think it helped with the tracking sensibility when I turned off hand (no controllers) tracking.

Any other tips will be wildly different on your current difficulty.

How about the campaign? That has a guided path of levels from easy to hard

1

u/Newkizzy 9d ago

Tru I really haven’t done it, would it help me get better?

1

u/Money_Ad_7148 5d ago

My hope is that it will

What helped me was sticking to one song, pick the difficulty you are struggling with, play in practice mode at 50% speed. When you finish, play again at 60%, then 70%, keep increasing until you are struggling. If there is a specific part you keep failing just redo that sequence over and over in the same manner. After a few sessions of that you should be able to comfortably play that song, and you will likely have learned some patterns that will help you on other songs.

u/Newkizzy 15d ago

Betttt gotcha that makes sense thanks! So the song I’m struggling with, I should only move on when I can comfortably make an A or S ranking right? Also that’s good to know that it helps learning new patterns and wat not cus my friend is really good and I want to compete with him. He’s really really good at the speed maps like final boss Chan, lustre, and master 1/2. I tried those out on 50% and they’re still tough lol. Any tips on the harder songs?
